This song is definitely another of my Billie Eilish favourites, and I am in love with the way her evocative voice is intertwined with Khalid's musky-toned singing. But even more than just being a beautiful song to listen to, "Lovely" hit my heart-strings with its gentle and compassionate way of addressing a person's ongoing struggle with depression - a struggle that many of us find all too real. In my cover of 'Lovely', I attempted to capture the ever-presence of depression which I have felt for a number of years, hidden by a face that laughed, smiled, and pretended to be okay - just one of my many coping mechanisms. But, I always had hope - hope that what I felt was not the truth. It was just the aftereffects of a young girl's growing pains in a world that felt too strange, too confusing, and nothing like home. My depression was the deeper symptom of my inability to find somewhere I could 'belong'. I never felt on the verge of a cliff in terms of ready to give up on life, but I was torn between two worlds: one where I thought I had it all under control, where I was happy and positive and great to get along with, and one where I needed to realize that I was fallible, unable to control anything, sensitive and vulnerable. I represented this in my video by using two characters; one is the person I showcase the world. The other is my authentic, true self. And, if you are able to notice it, the true magic happens when both 'persons' are recognized, understood, and merged into one - very human, but also very unique - being. There is a time to be happy, and to smile and laugh and cajole. But there is also a time to be sad, to feel deeply, and to know that it's okay that way. I want to use this song to remind you that you do not need to hide your true self. Especially from yourself. You may not be perfect or great to get along with most of the time (like me, lol). But, know one thing: You ARE lovely!
