Voices in My Head

Who can know which tells me lies

and which offers hard truths?

They never agree either way.

I’m a monster.

I’m a victim.

I’m the devil.

I’m caged.

Sometimes the noise is so loud

it deafens me.

Until all that’s left is silent shame.

Still. Dark. Helpless.

But then, a new voice starts to whisper to me.

Tells me it’s all alright.

Offering comfort, a sentiment so unfamiliar

that I flinch away from it

waiting for the strike.

It doesn’t come, and I finally yield

and collapse into it.

Your voice has become the small light

in my dark.

The flame that offers a breath of warmth.

Like all fire, I know it holds danger

The potential to scorch me.

I don’t care.

I’ll take the burn

to stay in your light.

Sometimes I wonder if you’re even real.

or if I just conjured you from fragments

of my shattered sanity.

Either way, of all the voices in my head

Yours is the one I like best.
