Happy #NationalBookLoversDay
Happy #NationalBookLoversDay to all our literary fans out there! Here at the Archives, We’re very shelf-aware of our love of all written records! To celebrate this wonderful day, here’s a look at some of our favorite literary holdings!
As all lovers of fiction know, a good book can transport you to other lands. And speaking of literary travels, here’s #ErnestHemingway’s 1923 passport photo.
Nothing warms our hearts more than seeing young people having fun in libraries! Here’s a 1940’s photo of children checking out books from the Benjamin Franklin Library.
Sometimes all you need is a great book and a little space. No one knows this quite like Astronaut Janice Voss! Here she is enjoying “A Man on the Moon” while exercising on an ergometer on the middeck of Endeavour, Orbiter Vehicle (OV) 105.
It wouldn’t be a proper #NationBookLoversDay celebration without highlighting some of our favorite American authors. Here’s a photo of #JamesBaldwin and #MarlonBrando at the Civil Rights March on Washington.
To all the Edgar Allan Poe fans, this one’s for you! Here’s a look at Poe’s enlistment documents.
Poe joined the Army at the age of 18 in Boston. This enlistment paper shows that he used a false name, Edgar Perry, and a false age, adding four years to his real age. The paper also described him as being 5 feet 8 inches tall, with brown hair, gray eyes, and a fair complexion.
Happy #NationalBookLoversDay, Booklr!
The distinct burden of being a climate scientist
you made a post a little while ago regarding digital minimalism which is something i’m working on at the moment. i wouldn’t say i’m a minimalist though i would love to be and am working towards it. i have also been working on digital privacy and safety and idk im kinda still learning and trying to get it all sorted before my uni term in the fall and was wondering if you may help a bit in that area, only if you want to of course!! take care and may you have a wonderful day darling 🌿✨
Hi, love! Thanks so much for reaching out! I think you have a noble goal. I’m doing something similar before my uni term starts in a few weeks by really minimizing how I use my phone. You don’t have to be a minimalist to integrate minimalist practices in your life.
I don’t know specifically what you’ve accomplished already, or what you’re planning on doing, but here’s a few tips:
As you prep to go to uni, go ahead and only bring what you need. Really monitor what you use on a daily basis. This will make your packing/unpacking so much easier!
If you’re commuting, do the same thing, but with your school bag. When I first started at uni, I had all these ideas about reading on campus and looking smart, so I brought a novel or two every day! I didn’t end up reading any of it, and it only made my bag heavier.
Since you’re trying to form new habits, make a list of the habits you want to form. This is a great video that offers some stellar tips on habit formation!
Be careful what you download, and only download items from your “App Store” to minimize viruses on your devices!
The digital world is scary. There’s so much I don’t know. What I do know (and something I’m not good at), is that you can’t be harmed from the internet or feel the negative effects of social media if you don’t use it. Try deleting some apps for a while.
The different aspects of your life affect one another. If you try minimalism, you’ll find you’re more content and less likely to compare yourself with others. This comparison alone is maximized by digital practices and advertisements. A book I recommend on the topic is Goodbye, Things, by Fumio Sasaki.
I hope this helps you! If you have ANY other questions, please feel free to reach out or DM me! Have a great day!
Take a step back and try to reconnect with your books, find the magic within every chapter and topic that you are learning. Think about the difference it will make to know it in the long run. Imagine your future self with that kind of knowledge in its brain, know that it might help you to understand something even more complex. Read, investigate, invest time in your future self. And don’t overthink it, just do it before your brain and insecurities figure out that you may not know how to do it.
i don’t even go here but asdklfj;laskj fucking LEGEND
Neil: I had this idea about a baby swap, kind of like The Omen, but it all goes wrong and it becomes a nice kid. So I wrote 5,000 words of this thing, and I sent it to a few friends to look at, and then Sandman and Books of Magic took over my life and my time and didn’t really think about it. I knew it was a thing, I knew that I’d get to it one day, and then I got a phone call from Terry.
Tim Ferriss: How much later was this?
Neil: Maybe eight months, nine months. He says, “That thing you sent me. Are you doing anything with it?” I said, “Well, no, I’m doing Sandman. I’m doing Books of Magic.” He said, “Well, I know what happens next. So either sell me the idea of what you’ve written so far, or we can write it together.”
Now, as far as I was concerned, that was a lot like Michelangelo ringing you up and saying, “Do you want to paint a ceiling together this weekend?”
The UK alone produces over 1.1 MILLION TONS of clothing every year. Producing and washing all these clothes releases as much CO2 as the countries of Zimbabwe and Afghanistan combined.
330,000 TONS of clothing are sent to landfills every year!
You can help by consigning, donating, trading, or recycling your old clothes (after giving them a nice long life in your own closet). Shop for “new to you” clothes at thrift stores, used clothing stores, clothing swaps, or trade with your friends!

writing adult emails is awful
its like
hi [name of person],
this formatting is making me uncomfortable but I have to tell you something / ask you something that is vital to my career as a student.
I re-read and edited that sentence for an hour, but you’ll probably just glance over it for half a second.
thanks!

I have a stock format and structure I use.
Dear Person I am Writing To:
This is an optional sentence introducing who I am and work for, included if the addressee has never corresponded with me before. The second optional sentence reminds the person where we met, if relevant. This sentence states the purpose of the email.
This optional paragraph describes in more detail what’s needed. This sentence discusses relevant information like how soon an answer is needed, what kind of an answer is needed, and any information that the other person might find useful. If there’s a lot of information, it’s a good idea to separate this paragraph into two or three paragraphs to avoid having a Wall of Text.
If a description paragraph was used, close with a restatement of the initial request, in case the addressee ignored the opening paragraph.
This sentence is just a platitude (usually thanking them for their time) because people think I’m standoffish, unreasonably demanding, or cold if it’s not included.
Closing salutation,
Signature.
People always ask me how I can fire off work emails so quickly. Nobody has figured out yet that it’s the same email with the details changed as needed.
reblog to save a life holy shit
There’s no good way to phrase this. I went dark on social media yesterday because it still doesn’t feel real. I keep seeing the headlines and I was triggered; shaking, crying, and vomiting. I don’t want this misread, I WASN’T in the crowd on Sunday. But I live directly five miles away from the Oregon district. I go there literally all of the time.
Nothing feels real.
little girls who go around after it rains and pick up the worms off the sidewalk and throw them back in the dirt are the cornerstone of our society and we should all strive to have that level of compassion for each other and for the natural world

Aren’t we all grateful worms in one way or another
