STREETS 31 OCT — 9:53 PM Neutral territory / @kaisloane
Little time remains, just over an hour to wring himself dry of any lingering anger, any vice still itching to claw its way out. Fending off a pack of vicious Capulets had only hurt, pushed him further along the edge of the cliff called indulgence, one the witches had practically begged him and every other one of them to swan dive off of this evening—to purge. Hearing Brielle’s voice had helped, learning she was safe and hadn’t met the fate he’d feared she had in the hours she was silent. But knowing he would see Calina the moment he set foot through his front door helped more.
It would seem, however, as he turned the nearest corner in search of the bridge they were to convene upon commencement of this festival of chaos, that vice was not done with him yet. A familiar face, perhaps ten, twelve years older, but still as sinister as he remembers, comes into view, and though the light be dim, the radiance of potential is as bright and blinding as it was the first time he’d met the little Sloane. “Could it really be?” He laughs, hearty and from the belly, almost amused at the way chaos has laid its bait so generously at his feet tonight, as if he wouldn’t devour ever piece whole. “Cyrus Sloane all grown up.”
“And Faron Vasiliev, grown old,” Kai parries with little interest, cupping the flame on his lighter as he holds it to the end of his cigarette, “It is strange what time can do, no? When we first met, I would never have guessed that we would have to become enemies some day.”
His voice lingered in the air, the emphasis on their opposing loyalties an open invitation for trouble. He raised an eyebrow at Faron, daring the man to take up arms against him, as so many other Montagues had over the last two days. However, before the man could do anything to respond, Kai took a drag on his cigarette and shrugged, “Or not. Whatever. I pray for peace in Verona.”
He glanced at Faron, trying to read his expression, gauge how the man would react. However, there was something dark and inscrutable in the man’s gaze and Kai could not make heads nor tails of it. He jutted his chin out in petulance and continued to speak, though acerbically.
“Would you do me a favor, though?” he said, a lilting grin on his face, “Whether you are or are not about to attack me, would you call me Kai? No one calls me Cyrus anymore--- it is such an old name and i think it hardly suits me. If I am to pass, I would hate for it to be the last thing I hear.“
[ @kaisloane ] 0019. 31/10/2018. 20:33PM. CAP. TERRITORY / e. THE PURGE.
In a city spun into chaos, where anyone worthy of going toe to toe with danger treads the cobblestones with highly strung caution, she tracks him down by breaking the fingers of three different Capulet lackeys, receiving a heads-up text from a Montague who owes her a favour, and a whole lot of blind, dumb luck. Grace can’t remember the last time she saw Cyrus, but there’s no mistaking that the lithe-limbed youth is him. There’s a certain slant to his shoulders that suggests he isn’t enjoying himself tonight as much she is, so she approaches with enough zest to make up for it by detaching herself from the shadows to immediately invade his personal space. A palm slamming into the centre of his chest, she grabs at the material and holds him in place. “Isn’t this a nice surprise, baby boy? Have you missed me?” She raises her chin, eyeing him critically, uncertain if the dark smudge on his jawline is a pitiful attempt to grow facial hair or simply some dirt. “La Purga really is fun for all the family.”
The back of a bloody knuckle grazes the line of Cyrus’ cheek with false affection, itching with desire to break the skull of this boy-king who has already achieved so much more than she has. It’s infuriating. It’s a depressingly common theme. It’s enough to make Grace’s lip twitch in irritation. “How’s mummy, Cyrus?” Her mouth cuts into a sharp shape. “Wait, it’s something else now, isn’t it? Because dio knows that a name change is going to solve all your fucking problems. Clay? Cry? Chai?”
He had only been twelve when he had left Capetown, but, by then, it was already too late. Verona had robbed him of his youth, forced him to be callous, to rid himself of any weakness. By the time his bags were packed (done for him, ever-so-thoughtfully by a mother who had not consulted whether or not he would like to leave), he had already traded toy daggers for the real thing. He had long since left childhood behind him.
It was not untrue that before, before Capetown, before he had gotten involved with the mobs, before he had understood Verona as he did now, he had admired Grace Daly. It was easy to. She was beautiful (all the Daly sisters were), and she burned with a flame that was hard to ignore. He had envied her wildness, her refusal to be tamed.
But that was then.
When she looked at him like he was still a child, invoked a name that he no longer used, brought up a woman he no longer cared for, he could not help but feel tiredness, like a wave, wash over him. He was on guard, but, even with the eminent threat of what she could do to him looming over him, he could not summon the verve to put on a glibly saccharine smile.
“La Purga is almost over and I have done nothing to you or your kind, Grace,” he said finally, ignoring all her questions, turning his cheek away from her bloody knuckle, “Please leave me out of your machinations.”
evcravens:
Everett puts on a smile that’s only half-practiced, a soft puff of air escaping his lips at Cyrus’s apparent ire at having ( heaven forbid ) his cheeks pinched, a warped echo of childish annoyance pulled straight from the boy’s primary school years. Eyes just wide enough to be innocent, speech just blithe enough to seem authentic. It’s a good façade: that much Everett will give Kai, whether or not the boy himself is aware that it is one is something Everett hasn’t quite determined yet. There’s something rotten drowsing under the surface of all this affection that puts him on edge.
After all, manipulation of his affections seems to be a Sloane trait. This time, however, Everett won’t be so easily caught. So long as Cyrus wants him to, he will play the part of a father figure — or whatever this strange space is he occupies — but he is too watchful to allow himself to grow too attached. He can’t make the same mistake again.
As Kai mulls over his question, Everett realizes, without much surprise, that his care for the boy is toeing the line already. He knows Cyrus is not his to protect, even if he wants to. Despite everything that happened between him and Vivianne, he respects her right to motherhood over her only child, and Everett knows that overstepping his boundaries in Cyrus’s life would be the worst sort of offense.
And so he listens but does not counsel, unsurprised but still mildly disappointed at Cyrus’s continued disinterest in the church. He’d always shepherded him towards compassion and virtue when he was younger. But whatever flourished — if anything did at all — was completely negated by all the negative influences Kai had likely encountered in the mob. Flowers are all too easily choked out by thorns, even as they reach for the sun.
“Bhatt would be correct. The illusion of reality is an incredibly powerful asset,” Everett agrees. Privately, however, Cassian leaves a faint, unpleasant aftertaste on his tongue. The Capulet soldier is a little too ambitious, a little too like Faron for Everett to ever really like him. “It would benefit you, then, to be more consistent in attending mass on Sundays. Both for the sake of your sore cheeks and for your public image.”
He wonders at Kai, this aspiring politician, this boy just shy of manhood who wants to grasp the world between his fingertips. The nostalgia that flickers however briefly across his features is enough proof to Everett that Kai isn’t ready. A part of him is still a boy full of sepia-toned memories that bruise and ache and bloom purple when pressed. Everett can’t recall ever meeting a politician who hadn’t ruthlessly crushed any softness left within them.
“Then you’ll have to reacquaint yourself with the city. Some things — most things — haven’t changed.” A beat of silence, then a wry smile. “Except for the crime rate. But that’s to be expected.”
“That is what I aim to do, thus my being here-“ he gestured at the table meaningfully, just as a server arrived with their orders. “For as much as things have not changed, finding my place in Verona is as hard of a task as any. I may remember the streets, know where I belong, but where I stand in people’s hearts-- that is where I am uncertain.”
“If I am to be frank, Everett, I suppose that is why I found myself attending service the first time as well. Perhaps it was foolhardy, but the community that the church provides was a great comfort to me in my last years in Verona. I had hoped that it would help me reacquaint myself here again. But, when the sermon turned to how man is still good, how the meek will inherit the Earth, I could not help but think,” his hand balled into a fist around the fork he had picked up and, when he noticed it, it fell to the table with a clatter, “neither your piety nor mine saved us from her, did it?”
And whether the waver in his voice were real or it were fake, it was certainly convincing. Kai treated the rhetorical question as if it were something he were ashamed of, refused to meet Everett’s gaze as he swallowed hard on the admission.
But, was it a slip of the tongue- the revelation that he was not as hardened as he would like to be? Or was it something more sinister-- the calculated move of a boy who had only known how to prey on people’s empathy and take from it? As the morning light wrapped its glowing fingers around his throat, circled his head in a spattered laurel of sunlight, his intentions were all the more indecipherable.
Villain or vulnerable? Prince of his own destiny or prisoner of his fate? A boy who had forsaken God and played at being Him or one who God had played with and forsaken?
( on his part, Kai did not have the answers. he was both. he was neither. all that mattered was that he had not lied. )
He paused, as if suddenly noticing the somber tone he had adopted. Shaking his head slightly, he pardoned himself, before changing the subject slightly, “Scusa, signore. They say in polite conversation never to speak of religion or politics and I suppose this is why. The Church has taught me to forgive and I do so wholeheartedly, but I have seen too many lambs lead to slaughter, too much senseless bloodshed tied to the world we live in. If the life I have chosen is righteous, then it is not godly. And if I must choose between the two, as a Capulet, if it is God or Cosimo, I choose Cosimo every time.”
“Signora Bianchi forgives my absences. It would do you well to do the same. A lapse in faith is common is all-the-rage in those my age, I do hear. Perhaps I will come back to the light in time, but the grace of God has yet to let me in.”

Marcelo’s previous attempts at raising their blood alcohol level had ended poorly, resulting in one or more of the injuries littering their body now — most from within the last few hours, alone. Yet, the journey continued, with perhaps more diligence, even, than before. Raking fingers through disheveled hair, they ignored the ache that had burrowed beneath sore muscles, hoping it would only be a short time before the rush of liquor eased the strain. The day had only really just begun, sunlight unveiling Verona’s sins, refusing to hide the carnage any longer. Marcelo knew there was plenty left for them to do before daylight retreated, plunging the city back into its awaiting shadows, and they intended to do said things with alcohol rushing through their bloodstream.
They turned each corner with purpose, fingers cautiously hovering over their firearm as they navigated their way through neutral territory, well aware it was no such place until La Purga had ticked to a close. Verona’s streets were temporarily released of their loyalties, Montagues crossing the Castelvecchio for vengeance while the Capulets prowled with bloodlust on the opposing end. Everyone traveling from one territory to the next would be rounding these same blocks, treading this same worn path, and Marcelo’s eyes scanned for their presence. There was a fair chance they wouldn’t make it to see the break of day November 1st, a fact they had, as always, given little consideration. There was, however, an absolutely infinitesimal chance they’d be arriving to that death stone cold sober.
Taking a left toward the bar they knew loomed in painfully close proximity, they could practically taste the sting of liquor on their lips when they nearly collided with a figure in front of them. Stepping aside to regain their balance, fingers meeting the grip of their gun defensively, they turned their hardened gaze on the other, registering their face only a beat too late. “Kai Sloane,” they greet, the syllables dripping from their lips like an unspoken dare. With a sigh, they roughly shoulder their way past, unable to refuse an opportunity to rough up a Capulet despite their impending goal. “I’d be more careful, if I were you,” they warn, turning on a heel to face the other, brow quirking.
Of course, Kai took no offense to them culling the weak. If they could not run with the wolves, they did not belong in the pack.
However, La Purga was an affront to everything Cosimo had asked him to do, a spit in the face to the efforts of compromise, if not peace, that he had sworn to commit himself to. Most of the Capulets and the Montagues could take care of themselves, either by being armed-to-the-teeth while prowling the streets and looking for a fight or by locking themselves in at the slightest hint of trouble. But for those in Verona who could not afford to do the same, this was not so much a tithe as a massacre.
It was unfair, for certain. But, as Kai slipped by a cowering man, surely homeless, surely doing his best to stay hidden, he had nothing more to spare than a pitying glance.
( He had known their pain, after all. He had felt the creeping fear that came in with the cold. He was nearly drowned in the desperation that came with being left outside to rot.
But he had survived it.
And so, he had no time to waste on sentimentality. )
When Marcelo Rosso stumbled into his path, teeth-bared and ready to pounce, Kai could only shrug. There was no sense in the whole thing, really. He wasn’t looking for a fight. But he had known that it was a possibility when he had left his home that morning. And, really, when Marcelo was so kind to bring the fight to him, who was he to decline the offer?
“Would you?” Kai said, matching the other man’s grin with one of his own and approaching, “I’d like to hear more about what you would do if you were me. After all, if I were one of Roman Montague’s bitches, I’d turn around with my tail in between my legs.”
“Really, you’re itching for a fight when I’ve done nothing to you?” his voice was filled with disdain so thick that someone could cut it with a knife, “I guess what they say is true. You are feral. If I were Montague, I’d keep you on a leash.”
brielle: mm. i know what it sounds like to take an order and you dont have the strength to give me one

If he had a artist’s eye, perhaps he would have known the truth. In bruises, flowers did bloom, after all.
( At the moment, he was a veritable bouquet. )
His jawline had been kissed by orchid blue-stained lips and the press of violets against his eye had made it turn purple with a vengeance. As a centerpiece, a makeshift tourniquet blossomed scarlet with ichor. Had there been anyone who cared for beauty in the chaos of the hospital, they would have certainly clambered over each other to witness him, dreaming of ever being able to capture a visage that was half as noble. Head aloft, brows furrowed, jaw square -- he was defiant as David, heroic as Hercules. He was-
He was a living testament to there still being beauty in the wasteland of the weak.
But he, he would never understand that.
Admission of weakness was failure as far as he was concerned. And, even as they were in the hospital, as the adrenaline started to wear off and the pain from his injuries started to burrow through his bones, he would not concede. Especially not if-
“Signora-- Signora--” as Paola waved over the austere woman from across the room, Kai thought he could not ever hate her more, “Thank goodness you are here, your son is being insolent, un imbecille per usual. He needs medical attention, but he will not admit himself to the care here-- I saw him in the street after he was attacked by-”
Kai had been leaning on a table, but he shoved himself in front of Paola before she could finish. He offered Viv an easy grin (though, if he were honest, it did not feel so easy at all) and, in a placating tone of voice, began to speak, “No one. I apologize, Mother. Do not listen to her. She insisted on bringing me to a hospital when not only am I perfectly fine, but while it was compromised.”
He shot a inspid glare at Paola, who had faded into the background as she realized what she had gotten in between, before meeting his mother’s gaze once more.
“I trust- that La Purga has found you well.“
i hate how they market alexa as a ‘member of the family’ like that’s SO fucking blatantly insidious and terrifying also if i wanted an untrustworthy/cold/emotionless machine in my life i’d just talk to my fuckin father
