I watched last night's Daily Show and I am super disappointed they straightened Michelle Wolf's hair. I swear, every curly/natural haired woman I watch on TV has her hair straightened eventually. Usually by season 2 or 3.

A chatelaine bag was usually worn at the waist, but could also be carried at the wrist. Chatelaines were also made as belts, which eschewed the purse and became a ladylike tool belt; a hook with multiple hanging lobster claw appendages, each carrying useful items for the average Victorian woman, such as the pantry keys, smelling salts, perfume vials, miniature notebooks, magnifying glasses, letter openers, timepieces, seal applicators, miniature portraits or lockets, sewing tools (such as needle cases, scissors and thimbles), money and toilette articles, as well as decorative charms, such as fruits, fish or birds.

Labor Studies Moment

It irks me that pipeline defenders rely so much on the excuse that pipelines are a safer method to transport toxic and explosive material than rail (which it dubious to begin with). But that claim can’t be made without bringing up the the systematic de-staffing of trains to single-employee crews (a movement spearheaded by Warren Buffett, I might add). According to the retired railroaders I’ve had the pleasure of talking to, trains used to be staffed by 5 to 8 individuals. Now, thanks to employers pitting the divided railroad unions against each other, trains are down to 2 and in danger of going down to 1. (not to mention the dangers from deregulation and frankenstein combination of various car-types on a single train) So the argument that pipelines are safer than rail is bullshit, because simply restaffing trains would make rail safer. Two years ago, I heard a Water Protector speak at a conference between railroad employees and environmentalists held in Richmond, CA. I’m sorry I didn’t listen to his words more then.

Happy 92nd birthday, President Jimmy Carter!

Born on October 1, 1924 in Georgia, Carter attended the Naval Academy and served in the Navy and Navy Reserve until 1961. A year later, Carter was elected as a Georgia State Senator, serving until 1967, then ran for Governor of Georgia and was sworn in on January 12,1971.

In 1976, Carter beat out Gerald Ford for in the Presidential election, making him the first candidate from the Deep South to be elected for the position since the 1848 election. During his term as President, the Department of Energy and the Department of Education were established. His post-presidency work included setting up the Carter Center to advance human rights for which he received the Nobel Peace Prize for his efforts in 2002.
