I see a lot of American cryptids and mythical creatures on here, so I thought I'd share some of my favourite creatures from here in Wales! 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁷󠁬󠁳󠁿

Afanc

A crocodile and beaver type creature. It lives in welsh lakes, and sometimes Conwy river. It's a demonic creature that eats anyone who swims in its home.

Ceffyl Dwr

Similar to the Scottish kelpie. It inhabits mountain pools and waterfalls. North wales lore says it's quite evil and foreboding, whereas south wales lore says it's quite a friendly creature. I'm north Walian so this is our version: It entices people to ride it and then evaporates mid air, so the rider falls to his death.

Llamhygin Y Dwr

The Water Leaper. It's a bat/frog/lizard hybrid. It lives in lakes and ponds, snapping fisherman's lines and eats livestock and fishermen.

Y Ddraig

The famous welsh dragon, featured on our flag. Legend says that Vortigen wanted to build a castle right where 2 dragons were said to be sleeping. When they started digging, they found 2 dragons fighting, one white and one red. The red dragon won.

Gwillgi

Similar to the English black shuck, gwillgi is a fearsome black dog who haunts rural welsh roads at night.

Coblynau

Gnome like fairy creatures, they live in Welsh mines. They help the miners find the rich veins of ore and other treasures by knocking.

Cyhyraeth

Similar to the Irish Bean Sidhe, y cyhyraeth is a disembodied moaning voice that foretells death.

Cath Palug

Palugs cat was an enormous cat that lived on Anglesey. It killed 180 warriors who were sent to kill it.

Adar Llwch Gwin

Griffin type creatures that were gifted to Drudwas ap Tryffin by his faerie wife. They understand human language and obey commands.

Cadair Idris

Translates to "Chair of Idris". Idris was a huge giant and this mountain was his chair. Legend has it that if you sleep on this mountain, you'll either wake a madman or never wake at all. I've actually been here, it's not far from my house.

Hello, this is the original mod/creator of the blog. I know i haven’t been posting in a long time, and that’s because I lost interest in this blog. I’m here to let you all know that I will no longer be operating this blog. 

Thank you all for following this blog, it’s been a fun time while the blog was in its active years, but now i have to move on. I’m sorry.

To the other mods: You guys don’t have to keep this blog active. Whether you want to or not, that’s fine with me. And feel free to leave the blog whenever you want.

Twin children of Ares (Mars) and Aphrodite (Venus), both of them rule over fear, specifically as children of Aphrodite, they rule over fear of loss.

Phobos uniquely rules over:

Panic

Flight

and Rout

While Deimos uniquely rules over:

Terror

and Dread

Now for more facts!

They have a couple names in Roman Mythology, Phobos is sometimes called Pavor or simply Terror (oddly enough when his brother rules over Terror), while Deimos is often either called Metus or Formido. Deimos was also sometimes called Fuga, but in this Roman form he rules over Rout instead of - or alongside - his brother.

Both of them could often be found accompanying their father Ares (Mars) into war, alongside Enyo (Bellona), Eris (Discordia) and others of Ares' squad. Sometimes even driving his chariot.

Lions could possibly be seen as a sacred animal of theirs, or at least Phobos', as sometimes he was depicted in art as having the head of a lion, or lion like features like a long beard & mustache and long hair.

Multiple authors, Hesiod, Homer, Quintus Smyrnaeus, etc. often described the twins being depicted upon various shields. They are described as being inscripted upon the shield of Heracles, the shield of Agamemnon, and the shield of Achilles.

It's also stated by Homer that the twins were two of the spirits who imbued the Aigis with it's power.

Hesiod also calls Phobos "the Shield-Piercer", he described the two as "terrible gods who drive in disorder the close ranks of men in numbing war, with the help of Ares, sacker of towns."

Ares is not the only God the two help in battle however, as Nonnus described the twins helping Zeus (Jupiter) with the battle against Typhon. "Now Zeus armed the two grim sons of Ares, his own grandsons, Phobos and Deimos his servant, the inseparable guardsmen of the sky : Phobos he set up with the lightning, Deimos he made strong with the thunderbolt, terrifying Typhon."

And of course, their names were famously given to Mars' only two moons ❤️

War Deities

Aight people in lieu of Kargil Victory Day in India on Sunday (26 july, 1999 - when India whooped Pakistan’s ass in the Kargil war), the theme for this week is war deities.

Now almost all pagan religions have war deities, and in mythologies like Greek and Hindu, almost every single god is related to war. However, there are some deities who are specifically related to war.

Ancient Vedic Hinduism only mentions a few war deities - Rudra, a fearsome warrior from the Western Lands; Kartikeya, a boy-warrior; Shakti and Kali etc. However, these are only given prominence later in the Puranas and stories. 

The Vedas hold Indra in high esteem as a warrior, god of thunder and rain and King of the gods. The most fabled war story around him is how he had once killed the dragon Vritra with his fabled Vajra - made out of sea foam and a human skeleton (like seriously SEA FOAM and HUMAN SKELETON!!!?).

The Vedas also mention Nritti - the goddess of strife and death. She had been created cause the Earth was unable to bear the humans. And boom - Nritti is born. She aids the god of death, Yama, in his work, and plus makes humans bloodthirsty.

The war gods mentioned in the Puranas are more renowned. Here are a few : 

1. Durga : The goddess of war and victory, and the patron goddess of all royals, Durga is hailed as the warrior queen. She was created by all the gods collectively to defeat the demon Durgasur (Fortman - sounds like a video game) and his generals Shumbh and Nishumbh, cause they had a boon that only a woman can kill them (see, misogyny and dickheadedness never caused anyone any good). She is also called Mahishasurmardini - the Destroyer of Mahishasur for killing the shape-shifting demon Mahishasur (Bull Demon - sounds like the Minotaur’s Indian cousin). She is shown with a trident and 8 hands holding 8 different weapons, riding a lion.

2. Kali : Goddess of change and destruction, Kali was formed by the goddess Shakti to aid Durga in her battles. She is most famous for killing the demon Dhumralochana (Smokey Eyes - sounds like the name of your local drug dealer) and Raktabeej (Bloodseed); in fact she had killed Raktabeej by LITERALLY drinking all his blood, cause a thousand more Raktabeejs formed whenever his blood fell on the ground (btw sounds like a great idea for a DnD monster). She is depicted as wearing a garland of skulls, and with four hands - one holding a scythe, one holding a bowl, one holding a skull and one holding a trident. She is shown as standing on Shiva, the god of destruction.

3. The Pleiades - The Pleiades (called the Krittikas in Hinduism) are a group of warrior maidens in Hinduism. Legend states that they were the wives of the Saptarishis, the seven great sages. Once, they were molested by the fire god Agni, but their husbands blamed them for being molested. Tired of their misogynistic, patriarchal shit, they divorced their husbands (GOOD FOR THEM) and formed their own warrior-sisterhood. They are said to roam forests and protect children and women (sounds a LOT like Artemis’s hunt).

4. Kartikeya - The commander-general of the gods, and the god of war, Kartikeya is the son of Shiva and Parvati (couple goals really). The story goes that one day Shiva and Parvati were having sex and Shiva accidentally jerked off on the ground. Now at the same time, there was this demon called Tarakasur (Treeman - sounds like evil Groot {just kidding, Groot can never be evil}), who had a boon that only Shiva and Parvati’s son could kill him. So Shiva handed over this sperm (yuck) to the fire god Agni. However Agni couldn’t bear the “energy of Shiva’s seed” (double yuck), so he handed it over to the wind god Vayu. Vayu passed it over to the river goddess Ganga, but she literally started boiling, so she deposited this sperm in a forest (yucky yucky yuck) where the forest caught fire. Finally, the Krittikas arrived, and with their powers, transformed that sperm into six babies. They all brought up the babies, trained them in different warforms blah blah blah. Then, Parvati came along to take them back (what are they, laundry?) and hugged them so tightly that they morphed into one being - Kartikeya (literally means the son of the Krittikas). Bada bing bada boom Kartikeya saves the day.

He is depicted with six heads and riding a peacock. He carries a divine spear, and his flag which features a rooster as his emblem (makes sense, you should NEVER mess with roosters). He is shown as an everyoung bo warrior, and is REALLY popular in South India, Malaysia, Singapore, Bali and Indonesia.

OKAY Headcanon time!

Apollo loves kids and is just so good with them. He is the nurturer of young after all.

Basically owns a day care because he doesn't mind taking care of kids of other gods for a while.

It's common for Aphrodite to leave her toddlers under Apollo's care when she's busy. Like having a date...or beauty bath

Because they're both besties.

Apollo has lots of shiny things with him lying around which kids usually like. He lets them play with whatever they want.

He lets the kids draw on his face.

He has no trouble putting them to sleep because with his soothing voice, he can sing the best lullabies.

Artemis joins him sometimes. She isn't very enthusiastic but she wants to help her bro.

If their parents don't show up at the assigned time, he ends up adopting the kids and there's no stepping back.

A lil something I did to pass time during the past week. Hymenaeus wants to fly to some place far from Olympus but Apollo is not sure if he should. He has had his first flying class just yesterday after all...maybe if Hermes keeps an eye on him, it'll be fine...or will it? Well, fine or not, it'll be a fun ride, no doubt.

Hymenaeus (Hymen, for short) is one of the few children of Apollo who was born a god. He is the god of wedding hymns and appeared as winged child carrying a bridal torch in his hand. He is considered to be one of the Erotes (winged gods of love) and one detail I find particularly cute is that he's the playmate of Eros and Ganymedes. Oh and his mother is Calliope. Or Urania. Or Terpsichore. Or maybe even Clio...(yeah they were confused but listen man they all slept with Apollo. It's possible that they got pregnant together and gave birth to a couple of kids on the same day and like, got confused who was who's kid. Don't judge.)

I've always been kinda fascinated towards this kid. It's amusing that he is the god of wedding hymns but his father has vowed to never get married. I picture him as an upbeat, friendly kid who can be a little too enthusiastic sometimes. He loves weddings - the oaths, the happy crowd, especially the songs. Which is why he's bummed that neither his mom nor his dad or his aunt are ready to to get married. He just wants to sing at their wedding! He eventually accepts that as he grows up, although he doesn't pass a chance to pester his dad about it - just to annoy him. *cut to Hymenaeus popping up out of nowhere at Apollo's dates & asking the person if they'll marry his dad* (he learnt it the hard way that pulling this stunt on his aunt Artemis is a bad idea) Also, as the god of marriage hymns, I imagine he'd be dear to Hera, which is a big deal actually.

- Not the creative type too (she can't sculpt to save her life)

- But she and her dad are close, and if you say something bad about him u doomed (honestly with the whole family u doomed, but she'll get to you first)

- If you need to duplicate or multiply something, she will, somehow, make that happen
