On monday, I lost my best friend to suicide and nothing will ever be the same again. We did everything together and we were a team. She was always so supportive, helpful and loving through the good times and the bad. She made me smile almost everyday and I wish I could thank her for that. We used to hand out small wooden spoons from the canteen and everyone would ask why and we just said ‘because spoons’ but the reason is because if everyone has a spoon, they all had at least one thing in common, one thing uniting them. It showed that they all had eachother and they weren’t alone. Little did i know, she felt alone.
It was a shock at first because she seemed to be getting better but now I think that’s why. We were supposed to get hot chocolates after school at the tea shop like we always do but that time never came. My last words to her were ‘Love you’ but I never knew it would be the last time I said it to her.
She used to ask me ‘what’s the next thing you have to look forward to?’ and I’d tell her so she said ‘no matter how hard things might get over the next few days, think of that and how if you get through this, you’ll get there’. That helped me so much but now she’s gone, I have nothing to look forward to.
She was my north to my south,
The night to my day,
My ying to my yang,
My rest and my play,
The day that I was told was a day I won’t forget.
I was pulled out of third lesson,
English, I believe,
Taken to a quiet room with her friends to bereave,
Her brother sat down with us,
He told us the tragic news,
How her mental illness had won,
Unfortunately, death she did choose.
For a while, there was a stunned silence,
Surely, this couldn’t be true,
Our beautiful friend with the purest soul,
The sound of tears began quiet but grew.
What were we to do?
Why did she do it?
How were we to cope?
What could we have done?
Did she really run out of hope?
So many ifs and buts filled our minds,
But it didn’t change the fact,
That our friend had killed herself,
And she wasn’t coming back.
Silence filled the town,
Full of sorrow and regret,
The second one in under a year,
Nobody could forget,
She lit up the room with her smile,
The way she laughed,
The way she spoke,
She’d been through a lot,
We were proud of her,
Until one day,
She broke.
So let this be a lesson to you,
About the things you do and say,
That person may be feeling low,
Despite their happy display,
Make sure you’re the one that brightens someone’s day,
Don’t dampen it and then regret it once they’ve gone away.
Mental illness isn’t a joke or something to laugh about,
As soon they think of something positive, their minds fill with doubt,
It can get so unbearable that they do something drastic,
When you ask them if they’re okay and they say no,
They’re not being sarcastic.
So if someone asks for help,
Especially from you,
Don’t ignore them or push them away,
There’s something you should do:
Tell someone,
An adult who knows what to do at a time like this,
So they can help save that person from leaping into the abyss,
Try to help,
If they ask,
No matter who it’s from,
Friend,
Acquaintance,
Enemy,
It could be a ticking time bomb.
On monday, we lost a girl,
Who’s heart was pure and good,
She looked after everyone around her,
Although she was misunderstood,
She had a battle in her head,
Between herself and her mind,
She fought it constantly everyday,
If there’s a god, he’s unkind.
She was the strongest girl I know,
She’d been through so much,
Until she couldn’t fight anymore,
Her happiness out of her clutch.
She surrendered to her consciousness,
A powerful thing it was,
She said goodbye to her loved ones,
And bowed to her last applause,
As she committed the act and changed our lives forever.
She would be no more,
We wept with memories of her,
Our hearts in pain and sore.
On Monday the 19th of March,
We lost a little girl,
It was an out of body experience,
I watched it all unfurl.
She was one in a million,
I know that phrase is overused,
But it’s true there’s no one like her,
Sadly, her kindness was much abused.
She was bright and often smiling,
Her jokes were always funny,
She gave the absolute best hugs,
And to everyone, she was lovely.
We already miss her more than anything,
And it’s only been a few days,
I guess this is the new normal now?
For her strength she will always amaze.
This event has changed the town,
It’s unfortunately rather tragic,
Most people’s faces painted with frowns,
I don’t believe in gods or magic.
No entity could stand to put someone through this much pain,
Heartache and emptiness,
Please, never again.
