The sounds of whispers and the shuffling of feet filled the cathedral hall. Harrow, standing at the entrance, felt fairly sure she wasn’t doing this whole funeral thing correctly. Harrow could tell the people around her were disappointed by her lack of emotion. What they wanted was a spectacle, something to talk about in their social circles for days to come. A distraught daughter throwing herself at the foot of the altar where the coffins of her parents now lay would've done the trick. Instead, she sat in her pew, looking straight ahead.

Those bruised lips drew back into a vicious smirk, and for the first time, Harrow felt off-balance. Some dormant animal instinct struggled to not flinch away as Ianthe closed the distance between them. “I want to taste you,” she whispered breathily, eying the exposed sliver of her trachea with embarrassing want. “Not fucking likely,” Harrow replied.

The once-Reverand Daughter is now a dutiful agent of the Order; tasked with rooting out bloodstarved aberrations. Despite her best efforts, she's fallen into Ianthe Tridentarius' debt, and driven away her sworn blade.

She tries to fix this. Things go quite poorly.

She’d crawled on her hands and knees, picking up the pieces of his skull, methodically, calmly, trying not to slip in the mess of his blood mixed with hers on the slick tiles. Her hands had only shaken a little. She’d been dimly aware that most people would have been hysterical in her position, but there hadn’t been time for hysterics. He was in pieces on the floor, small enough to miss if she wasn’t careful. And so she had been cautious, and steady, and calm, and she had gathered up the pieces of her necromancer in silence.

Those pieces rested in a pouch around her neck now, half assembled — she worked on it whenever she had time, but progress was slow, and she had to be careful. On the first day she had dropped a fragment and spent an hour searching for it, only to find it under the dresser in the sparse room she’d been locked in. It was very nearly a disastrous mistake. She wouldn’t let it happen again.

Nobody believed her about the bones. She didn’t care. They didn’t know him. She did.

This was the first time they had shared a bed since they were children.
