Solas spoke. “There was a prison, built from memory and regret. I remember choosing to forget. To throw wide the door. To escape. What remains unclear is whether you have come to unbind me or to tighten the knot.”

If Solas could not remember his regrets, then he couldn’t be contained by them. It was an elegant solution to escaping his prison.

“That depends.” Rook said softly. “What do you intend to do once you are free?”

Solas did not immediately answer. Instead, he moved close enough for her to see the flecks of silver in the violet of his eyes.

“When I'm free?” Solas's gaze flicked to her lips before finding her eyes again. A slow, devastatingly dangerous smile tugged at the edges of his mouth.

“I would wake,’” he said each word deliberately, “at your side.” His voice was low enough that it barely disturbed the silence. It was loud enough to be felt.

Rook's heart stopped for a moment and then began to race.

“You seem surprised.” He raised his hand to cup her cheek. She should step away, outside of his reach. Her body refused to obey her.

She stood transfixed as Solas asked, “We are lovers . . . are we not?”
