Life and death in one picture.

No one really understands how much compliments actually mean to me, like I sometimes brush them off with a joke and a quick “thank you,” but really, I remember compliments forever, so if you’ve ever complimented me or done something nice for me, thank you so much.

This is a picture I took of what I think might be J2 (a.k.a Granny), swimming with a youngster from her Pod. She was known by the crescent shaped notch in her dorsal fin. Granny was often referred to as the matriarch of the J pod in Puget Sound and was the oldest known orca. 

I took this picture in 2012 on what was my first and only whale watching trip. We got lucky that day and I took a ton of pictures. Most on a fast shutter without really looking at the camera because I wanted to see the whales with my own eyes.

I didn’t really know what I had until I had time to look through the pictures later that day. Most were pretty awful. This picture was one of my best.

J2 hasn’t been spotted since October and scientists believe she is dead. (x) The Huffington Post article said she was thought to be between 75 and 105 years old.
