Survival
while i’m sleeping
sadness squeezes my finger
and wakes me up
it crawls into bed with me
and cries until I lull it to sleep.
it curls up closer
trying to find
the happiness buried deep inside me
until it pushes itself
so close
it breaks into a million pieces.
the shards find a new home
impaled between
the spaces of my ribs
and
i’m breathing glass
night after night.
