24. Prokaryote - this is hamburger meat, it could contain E-Coli. John says that a prokaryote is an organism without a nucleus, and E-Coli is a prokaryote.
23. Modified Stem of a Plant - this is a rose, well the stem of a rose. It's has prickly thorns (ouch!). Sherlock says that a modified stem is used to protect it, so the thorns of a rose do a great job.
22. Modified Root of a Plant - this is a potato! (Once again can feed the boys for days) It grows underground. John says that a modified root is something that serves a purpose, like a potato is a storage root, it holds starch and water. It's grown underground to protect it from animals.
21. Modified Leaf of a Plant - this is holly, it has a modified leaf. Sherlock claims that a modified leaf is a leaf that has come to obtain a feature for something other than photosynthesis. Holy has prickly leaves to protect itself from herbivores.
20. Long-Day Plant - this is a beet. A beet is grown in the summer (we were out of fresh ones, we only had pickled ones). John says that long-day plants are plants that only flower after being exposed to sun for long periods of time, like in the summer.
19. Lichen - this is foliose, it's a type of lichen that looks like leaves. Sherlock says that lichen is a slow-growing plant that's crusty.
18. Hydrophobic - this is a bottle of olive oil. Oil doesn't mix with water. John says that if something is hydrophobic, it'll fail to mix with water.
17. Hydrophilic - this is sea salt. Salt is a substance that mixes easily with water (hence, the ocean). Sherlock says that if something is hydrophilic, it has the tendency to dissolve in water.
16. Homologous Structure - this is Kaiser’s paw. It's a bone structure that we see in dogs! Sherlock says that a homologous structure is an organ or bone that shows in different animals, pointing to a common ancestor.
15. Heterotrophy - this is my little brother, Cayden. He's human (we think), so he can't fix carbon. John says that a heterotroph is something that can’t fix carbon and grows off of natural carbon.
14. Gymnosperm Leaf - these are pine needles. They grow with pine cones, which hold seeds. Sherlock says that each gymnosperm embryo has two or more seed leaves, they’re called cotyledons.
13. Gymnosperm Cone - this is a pine cone. It holds seeds. Sherlock says that gymnosperm seeds form on the surface of scales or leaves, modifying into a cone.
12. Exoskeleton - this is a beetle. Sherlock says that the beetle has an exoskeleton, a hard protecting layer on the outside that acts as a skeleton. Humans have endoskeletons.
11. Epithelial Tissue - this is my mum’s hand. It has skin on it! John says that epithelial tissue is the outer most layer, it covers and protects skin and open cavities.
10. Endotherm - this is my other dog, Kaiser. He can make his own heat and keep himself warm. John says that an endotherm is an animal that depends on and can produce internal heat: a warm-blooded animal. (He looks like he wants to eat our buddies!)
9. Cuticle Layer of a Plant - this is a leaf. It has an outer layer to protect it from a variety of things. Sherlock says the cuticle layer of a leaf is a protective coating that covers the epidermis of leaves that don’t have a periderm.
