The Profiling of Serial Killers:
There are three categories that hold the key fundamentals of identifying/profiling serial killers.
This profiling system is utilized by the FBI and has been adopted by other police agencies.

• usually socially competent/employed
• meticulously plans the murder/method of escape weeks, months, and/or years before acting
• targets victims and stalks them for as long as necessary
• aware of growing murderous desire
• methodically disposes victims in ways to decrease the probability of discovery
• often transports victims to another location
• follows reports of their crimes through the media
• prepares their own weapons/tools
• sometimes educated in police investigative techniques
• destroys traces of evidence
• approaches victims through social interaction
• difficult for authorities to track
• often is married or lives with a partner
• may switch jobs or move to a different city to avoid detection
• constantly improves technique with each murder

• generally has below-average intelligence
• often socially inept, unemployed, and kills near their home
• has very vague/intense murderous desire, but has no plan of action
• generally attacks victims spontaneously
• makes no attempt to cover tracks
• difficult to track for authorities due to the unpredictability of their crimes
• often isolated from others/lives alone
• victims are often subjected to extreme mutilation
• usually leaves their victim’s body at the scene
• often keeps trophies belonging to their victims

• mixture of both organized/disorganized traits
• sometimes two or more killers working together
• method of attack is orderly, yet it quickly deteriorates into chaos
• the youthfulness/inebriation of the killer can leave a presentation of mixed indicators
