APhA2015: Ohio State Edition

Thirty-eight student pharmacists from The Ohio State University chapter of APhA-ASP descended upon San Diego, California at the end of March for the APhA 2015 Annual Meeting and Exposition. They met with pharmacists and student pharmacists from across the country to develop their professional skills and be a part of the policy process. The House of Delegates saw the passing of four policies concerning medication synchronization, dispensing of oral liquid medications, point of care testing, and naloxone access, along with the election of a new National Executive Committee.

Our chapter received recognition from the Awards Standing Committee for our excellence in patient care with the Chapter Patient Care Award and Second-Runner Up for Operation Heart. Thank you to all the dedicated chairs and volunteers who made this accomplishment possible! Congratulations also goes out to Jade Bensink who represented our chapter in the National Patient Counseling Competition. And a huge thank you to Maggie Oser (National Member-at-Large) and Valerie Budinger (Policy Standing Committee member) as they ended their terms in office. Thank you for all you have done to serve the academy on a local and national level.

Overall it was an amazing weekend in San Diego, learning more about our profession and discovering our voice and the impact we all have on the future of pharmacy. I hope to see you all in Baltimore for APhA2016!

OSU APhA-ASP chapter takes on MRM

At APhA-ASP Region 4’s 2014 Midyear Regional Meeting a lot was packed into a few short days. It was filled with networking and exchanges of ideas that our members are excited to bring back to Columbus. The 30 members representing Ohio State were honored when our chapter received the 2014 Operation Immunization Region 4 Award. This could not have been accomplished without the hard work of the Operation Immunization Committee and its volunteers. On Saturday, Andrea Clark also received the Student Recognition Award because of her leadership and dedication to the OSU APhA-ASP chapter.

Speeches given throughout the weekend on leadership, the future of pharmacy, and provider status inspired our chapter as we transitioned into the policy proposal process. Ohio State’s policy, suggesting an increase in education and treatment possibilities for patients suffering from addiction was met with little objection and passed with a large majority vote!

There was also plenty of time for fun over the weekend at the Friday night Talk Derby To Me-themed social, where Ben Coles won the Best Bow Tie Award, and at the Saturday night chapter dinner at Ramsey’s Diner. OSU had a little luck on its side too when five members took home raffle prizes.

Overall, the 2014 Region 4 MRM promoted a sense of the important role every student pharmacist plays in patient lives and in the future of our profession. Because of the strong involvement and hard work done within our chapter, OSU serves as an established role model to all schools within our region. At APhA-ASP’s Annual Meeting in March in San Diego there will be even more opportunities for our members to learn from student pharmacists across the nation and show how much The Ohio State University contributes to the organization and profession of pharmacy.

WEEKLY UPDATES: WEEK OF 10/20/14

General Body Meeting: Join us in 103 Parks Hall this Wednesday during professional hour for our next meeting where we will be featuring a speaker from Ohio Pharmacists Association.

Operation Immunization Flu Clinics: CVS Pharmacy is looking for student pharmacist volunteers for some upcoming flu clinics. This is for P1, P2, P3, and P4 students and counts towards CHS Hours! This volunteer opportunity consists of preparing the flu vaccine and helping with paperwork. Note: If you are a CVS intern and immunization trained (P2-P4) you are able to give the flu shot to patients.

The Chilli Cook Off is on Saturday, October 25, at the 4-H Center (3:00 p.m. - 7:00 p.m.). Operations Diabetes is looking for volunteers to work one-hour shifts to run diabetes screenings during the event. You must be CODA trained to participate in the event. Volunteers must dress business casually/professionally and wear a white coat. Contact Malorie Deakins.7 if you have any questions!

There are 13 Giant Eagle stores that are looking to work with Student Pharmacists to help administer the flu shot. Other activities may include counseling patients on flu shots, outcomes MTM assisting by flagging patients that are flu shot eligible based off CMR in past year, cold calling for patients that have gotten flu shot in past to remind them to come in again this year. This really is a great opportunity for you to reach out to patients! Please sign up for a store that you would like to go to and contact the store AS SOON AS POSSIBLE so you can start working together to plan clinic dates/times. The pharmacists are aware and will be expecting your call. I need your name, phone number and email address. After you participate in a flu clinic please email (Amy Olander.12 where, when, time, how many flu shots were given, and anything about the experience you would like to share!

ADDITIONAL CODA DIABETES SCREENING TRAINING AVAILABLE

APhA-ASP Operation Diabetes has partnered with the Central Ohio Diabetes Association to provide three more diabetes screening training opportunities. At the training you will become CODA certified and eligible to volunteer at future Operation Diabetes and CODA screenings. Just a reminder that CODA certification is good for 12 months from the date of certification. So those who completed certification last year will have to attend a training class to be re-certified and continue to be eligible to participate in screenings.

The training sessions will be held at the CODA office (1100 Dennison Ave Columbus, OH 43201) on Thursday September 25th, from 1:00-3:00pm and 6:00-8:00pmand October 9th from 6:00-8:00pm.

The training session counts for 2 CHS hours, only if you go on to complete at least one diabetes screening event, where a health care professional is present.

REGARDING CHS HOURS:

Screenings done at events such as Helping Hands do count toward CHS hours. At Helping Hands there are physicians, nurses and pharmacists that could help students properly direct patients with elevated glucose levels. However, the independent screenings that are through CODA alone, DO NOT count for CHS hours,unless there is a physician, nurse or pharmacists there overseeing the screenings. Multiple Giant Eagle Pharmacies will be participating in Flu Clinics this year and would love to have Student Pharmacists certified in flu shot vaccination to help out! Get experience in giving vaccines and earn some CHS hours! I have some clinics to start and more are on their way. Please remember to dress and act professional as you are representing the Ohio State University College of Pharmacy. Wear your white coat and have your intern license with you. Feel free to email me (Amy Olander, [email protected]) with any questions! After each clinic you participate in please email me ([email protected]) within a few days how many flu shots were given and if you are an APhA-ASP member. If you can no longer make a clinic you signed up for you must find a replacement. Thank you!

Helping Hands Health & Wellness Center (at Haimerl Center next to Ascension Lutheran Church: 1421 Morse Road, Columbus, Ohio 43229) is looking for pharmacy students to come and do diabetes screenings and hand out information regarding diabetes. In order to participate you must be CODA certified. CODA will be providing the screening materials which I will be keeping with me and will drop off to either to the volunteers or at Helping Hands prior to the event.Helping Hands begins at 3pm and runs until around 8pm. We ask that someone stay for diabetes screenings for 2 hours during this time. If the volunteers are able to come at 3pm that is great but I know due to class times this can be difficult. To accommodate for the schedules of all classes we ask that volunteers just show up by 5:30 pm at the latest and stay for at least 2 hours. These events do count as CHS hours. Please only report the number of hours that you were actually at helping hands which usually averages around 2 hours. Please dress professionally with a white coat and name tag. Please keep in mind that if you cannot attend the slot you signed up for, you’ll be responsible for finding a substitute and notify me through email regarding that. If you have 2 no shows without finding a replacement you will unfortunately no longer be able to sign up for Operation Diabetes events so please find a replacement if at all possible! If you cannot find a replacement please contact me so that I can help you fill the slot. Please limit your sign up to only 2 dates to give as many students as possible the opportunity to volunteer. Pharmacy intern volunteers will be providing flu immunizations at a variety of flu shot clinics under the supervision of pharmacists. This is a great opportunity for P2, P3, and P4 students to provide immunizations! Community health service hours pending approval from experiential office. Please provide name and email when signing up. Please arrive 10-15 minutes before designated start time. If you would like to volunteer for a portion of a designated time slot, please indicate time you are available. We appreciate your help!
