The highest tower standing on top of Cithrel Castle was occupied by a single person. Scattered around its floors were books and parchmentsâin the middle of the mess, a singular map of the continent was being spread out flatly. She had marked some parts of the map; allies to the crown, threats to the realm, possible in-betweens. Her hair put up in a messy bun, Ava had forgotten how long she had been here. After the last meeting, the current threat looming above her head was getting even more dire; âI had to do something. I canât let it happen, not againââ
In the middle of her own crowding thoughts, she didnât notice the door creaking open slowly as if not to disturb the occupant. He invited himself in with a quiet sigh, approaching the lady. The rolled blanket made out of fur he had been carrying with him was draped over her shoulders once he got close, gaining her attention in the process.
âYou should get some sleep.â Raegys told her with concern latched to his voice, glancing at the untouched dinner on a table nearby. âDidnât even eat your food.â
It was her turn to let out a sigh, shaking her head and turning her attention back to the map. âI canât sleep. Not right now.â
She got up and walked away from him, approaching a shelf where some parchments were stacked.
âAva.â He tried to speak to her again; seriously this time. âYouâre the Queen now, and there are people behind your back who are going to support you. You donât have to do this aloneââ
âWhat if youâre wrong?â The sudden sharpness in her tone took Raegys by surprise. âWhat if weâre wrong? What if there are backstabbers among those who Iâm supposed to trust?â
Once again, Raegys approached the shorter one and grabbed her by the arms gently. He gave them a light, reassuring squeeze.
âIâm here.â He spoke firmly. âI will never betray you, you know that.â
He glanced at the parchments and the map, then back to her.
âLetâs figure this out together, yeah?â
Ava bit on her lower lip and looked down on her feet, hands clenched into tight fists. âRaegys is here. He wonât let it happen again.â
She looked up to him and offered him a smile; the first one she ever showed to anyone today. âThank you.â
