nobody needed to know, and you took great measures to make sure it stayed that way.
there was a great pit in your stomach every time you slept next to your partner, who was wondering why for over a year you had suddenly become so distant.
you couldnât tell her that your older worker and resident, cassie mckay, was the source of all your troubles but desires.
your first year of residency was filled with tension, hands brushing against one another, or cassie profusely wanting to be your mentor, especially from the first day.
âhello! dr. robby said i could be some help to you?â you wondered, approaching cassie as she smiled widely. âeveryone else seems to be occupied.â
âi could use an extra hand,â she said, gesturing for you to follow her. âhow are you liking pittsburgh so far? where did you do medical school?â
âjohn hopkins! and as for pittsburgh, itâs not terrible. the weather is a bit different,â you stated, walking close by her with your notepad and pen in your hands.
âyouâll get used to it, i promise. and john hopkins is very impressive,â cassie said, and you smiled, softly thanking her. âweâll start you off easy. we need to do a few scans, bring people in from chairs, and keep working in triage.â
you never expected in the middle-end of your shift to be helping with a mass casualty, and how your nerves worked your body to make sure people came out of the hospital alive.
yet it was when the bodies first starting coming in on stretcher, did you just stand frozen and your body tremble, nausea rushing into through waves.
everything that you were taught in medical school momentarily left your head, and you felt it sudden disarray from the mass of injured people to death that laid all around the unit.
cassie had to snap you out of it, easily telling how panicked and shocked you looked. âyouâre okay, itâs okay. but right now, we need to help these people,â she said, her hands firm on your shoulders, and shaking you slightly to make you look at her. âi know this isnât how you expected your first day, but we need to do this. these people need you â i need you.â
âoâokay, okay,â you mumbled, nodding to yourself and she patted your shoulder, making you move along side her to help with the first rounds of patients.
cassieâs voice saying âi need youâ kept repeating in your head on a broken loop, all throughout each stitching you gave a patient, or when you were donating blood to them â her voice pushed you through the rest of the evening.
when it was time to leave for the evening, and the night shift was prepared to take over entirely, you stood outside the ambulance bay, taking in deep breaths of the warm weather.
you were trying to process what had happened right before your eyes, and how much blood, death, and survival you had witnessed and endured all in one day.
you heard your name be called out from behind you. âhey! are you okay?â cassie asked, coming up next to you. âi know today was not what were you expecting, but you did good in there.â
âi will never understand why someone thinks itâs okay to hurt others,â you muttered, sniffling. âiâm glad you were there, to help me through it all.â
âiâm glad i was too. are you on your way home now?â cassie asked, tilting her head a bit.
âi am, i just needed a minute. i know iâll have to leave all of today behind me,â you told her, wiping away the last of your tears. âdonât forget to take care of your ankle monitor in the morning.â
âyou can judge me for that. a divorced, single mom who somehow has a restraining order against her,â she explained, and you frowned, eyebrows drawn together.
âwhy would i ever judge you for that? everyone has their challenges; youâve seemed to make it out of yours,â you said, and she was taken aback, but only nodded. âmy girlfriend is probably wondering where iâm at, and i think iâll demand a bath out of her.â
âgirlfriend?â cassie questioned.
âher name is aubrey! i feel bad that i had her move with me over here after med school, but,â you inhaled sharply, shrugging, âshe insisted it was okay, and didnât want to do long distance.â
âthatâs sweet of her,â cassie stated, and you hummed. âiâll see you tomorrow, kid. have a good night and rest up well.â
a casual conversation like that shouldâve remained throughout the rest of your residency, trying to keep professionalism and composure when it came to you and your older resident.
but she made it impossible. it was impossible.
cassie insisted on being your mentor, even after you had easily picked up on things and what to do; she said it had something to do with how she wished someone guided her, and made you feel inclined to rely on her assistance and support.
at first, you thought it was in your head, and you were imagining things â how possessive she seemed when robby or samira took you aside for help, always saying, âyou stole my student from triage?,â or ânext time ask if you need me to share her,â but again, you just assumed it was all in your head.
in a matter of weeks, aubrey would wonder why cassie was picking you up or dropping you from work, why you insisted to stay later hours, and why your sex drive suddenly become increasingly low when you were around her.
you didnât push off her cassieâs hand would find itself on your waist, giving it a squeeze, or how she would be guiding you through instructions when it came to critical surgery in the trauma rooms, following it along with âatta girlâ or âyouâre doing good, just like thatâ â the simplest words causing you to go numb in your body, and warm in between your legs.
her praise was all you needed, all you thrived for. it almost like all bets were off the table the second you stepped into the emergency department, and were right next to her.
for a moment, you would forget you were even dating someone â even worse, sheâd treat you like you werenât in a relationship at all.
the line had to be drawn there, yet you dared to see how far it could be pushed, and if cassie was willing to do the same.
victoria was the usual babysitter for harrison, cassie being happy she was somewhat close in age to him, and that was she always there when she needed her to take care of him last minute.
âi donât think i can babysit harrison for a while,â victoria told cassie as you carefully eavesdropped, and sipped on your coffee. âmy parents are getting on me about where to apply, and this relationship with mateo is just so⊠please donât be mad at me.â
âiâm not mad, i promise. iâm sure i can get someone to fill your spot in for a bit,â cassie reassured, giving the younger girl a pat on her shoulder.
you got done finishing up with a patient, moving towards the nurses station as you looked at the tablet, hearing cassie call out your name.
âhowâs everything going with you today?â she asked, the two of you leaning against the counter of the station. âi heard you dealt with a kid who broke his arm because his sister pushed him down the stairs?â
âi donât understand siblings sometimes. the kid is going to be in a cast for about a month,â you explained, putting the tablet down. âi overheard victoria telling you she canât help with harrison.â
âitâs really okay. sheâs young, has a whole life. iâm sure i can find someone else,â she said, and you smiled, the glimmer of it catching her eye. âwhat is it?â
âi can always help out. me and victoria donât really have different schedules, so whenever you need me,â you trailed off, chewing the inside of your cheek. âi know you probably donât want to introduce harrison to someone new, but my offer stands.â
cassie grinned, shaking her head. âheâll love you, iâm sure he will. weâll talk more about it after our shift is over.â
âof course! i love helping you out,â you stated, tapping your fingers against the cold countertop.
âi know you do, sweetheart. thank you,â she said, embracing you into a tight, warm hug, and your arms loosely wrapped around her neck almost as a reflex, just wanting her to come in closer. âjust meet me outside the ambulance bay, okay?â
cassie pulled out of the hug and gave you a soft smile before heading off to her set of patients as you stood there like a deer in headlights, watching her disappear around the corner.
âyouâre so screwed,â trinity came up behind you, her voice jumping you out of your trance. âdonât you have a girlfriend?â
âitâs just a hug,â you said, picking up the tablet, and opening it up. âsheâs just relieved she found a new babysitter for harrison.â
âyouâre so naive,â trinity mumbled, shaking her head in disbelief. âaubrey wonât be pleased about this one.â
âwhatever youâre thinking, youâre delusional,â you protested, walking away from her.
when the end of your shift came about, you went outside to the ambulance bay, and unlocked your phone, going to your call log to ring up aubrey.
you brought up the phone to your ear as a few rings went through before she picked up. âhey, babe! is everything okay?â
âyeah, of course. so victoria canât babysit anymore for cassieâs son,â you began, inhaling sharply. âbut i offered to do it since vic and i donât have very different schedules, and it would be nice to help out a friend.â
aubrey went quiet, the static over the line being the only noise. âare you sure thatâs a good idea?â
âwhy wouldnât it be?â
âitâs just⊠you spend a lot of time with cassie,â aubrey stated, and you sighed. âyou stay after work to help her with charting when you know you donât need to.â
âi help her and santos out a lot,â you said. âitâll probably be like once or twice a week where i babysit, okay? and itâs only until victoria gets her own personal life back in order.â
âokay, if you say so,â aubrey muttered, suddenly hanging up the call. you scoffed, putting your phone back in your pocket.
âtrouble in paradise?â cassie asked as she carefully came up next to you.
âsomething like that, but itâs okay,â you assured, forcing a smile, and she only slowly nodded. âwhen would you need me to babysit?â
âon the evenings where iâll have to work later most of the times,â she said, getting out her phone and pulling up your contact as her thumbs clacked against the keyboard. âiâll message you my apartment address and the code to get in for now.â
only a few days later, cassie is texting you she needs you for the evening because her previous husband, chad, had a last minute business trip and needed to leave harrison with her.
you were parked in the loading zone, waiting for harrison as you stood outside your car, fidgeting with your keys.
the school bell had rang only two minutes ago, and you remember exactly how harrison looked when you had seen him come in on your first day of residency.
you see a boy slowly approach you, hands wrapped around the straps of his backpack. âyouâre momâs friend. she said you were nice and would come get me,â harrison stated, eyeing you up and down.
âis that okay?â you wondered, frowning.
âit is. especially when mom talks about you a lot,â he shared, opening up the backseat door, and got himself situated inside. you hurried into the driver seat, making sure he had his seatbelt on before putting on your own, and starting up the engine.
âdid you want me to grab you anything to eat? we can go to the grocery store,â you suggested, and he hummed, shaking his head.
âitâs okay. mom made sure to buy groceries the other night,â he said, taking his dinosaur toys out of his backpack. âshe told me to tell you she got you some things that you like, too.â
your heart pounded, swallowing thickly as you focused on the road ahead of you.
you werenât sure of what to expect of cassieâs apartment but it was in the style of how you would envision â minimalist, different art works on the wall, pictures of her family and harrison displayed everywhere.
âdo you have homework to do?â you asked the second harrison put his backpack on the couch, and was running to the kitchen.
âi do, but i usually wait until after iâve had a snack!â harrison shouted from the food pantry, and you smiled to yourself, mindlessly looking around her home.
he came back into the living room with a family-sized pack of cheetos, sitting on the couch. you tried to not stare at him, pretending to be interested in something around you.
âyouâre weirder than miss victoria,â he pointed out, putting a few chips into his mouth. âjust sit down on the couch.â
âam i that awkward?â you wondered, sitting in the corner of the couch, being feet away from him. âi just donât want to come off overbearing or something.â
âyouâre coming off as strange and weird,â he stated, and you awed, nodding. âdo you like working at the hospital?â
âyeah, itâs interesting. your momâs been a big help since i started,â you shared, and he kept chewing on the cheetos.
âsheâs smart, thatâs why,â he muffled, stuffing his mouth with more chips. âi like her a lot more than my dad and his girlfriend.â
âi get that. my dad was a bit of a pain when i was a kid,â you said, playing with the loose thread on your sweater.
âi think mom wants to date.â
âarenât you too young to know that sorts of stuff?â you asked.
âiâm almost twelve. i know dating, and she seems lonely,â he stated, grabbing the spare napkins on the coffee table to clean his fingers. âmaybe you can help her out.â
âyeah, maybe,â you mumbled.
the rest of the afternoon to the night went on smoothly; you helped harrison with his homework, had dinner ready for him (and cassie) by the time he got out of the shower, and made sure his nightlight was on before you had to tuck him into bed.
you knew cassie would be late, she texted you that she would be, but you only have the faintest memory of dozing off on her couch with the throw blanket covering you.
an exhausted cassie quietly entered her apartment, carefully putting her keys in the tray that was on the small bookshelf by the door. she slipped off her shoes, throwing her bag and coat on the floor, letting out a heavy sigh.
she could see the television was still on, slowly tip toeing towards the couch, only to find you passed out as she smiled at the sight of you.
she turned on your phone to see how you had various missed phone calls and messages from your girlfriend, and she felt slightly bad for keeping you at her place for so long.
cassie squatted down to your level, slowly shaking you awake. âhey, wake up. you fell asleep,â she whispered, but you wouldnât budge. she hummed to herself, stretching out the last of the strength she had in her muscles before she brought you into her arms, and started to carry you to her bedroom.
you curled up against her, breathing softly and slowly, cassieâs heart aching at the sight of you. your arms were wrapped around her neck, like your body was wanting to cling onto her for the remainder of your slumber.
fuck, she felt guilty, like she was committing a crime by having you this close to her, about to have you sleep in her bed.
she gently laid you down on the mattress, tugging the comforter over you, and you didnât move an inch to waking up, entirely passed out.
she wanted to sleep next to you, she itched for it â she needed to scoop you back into her arms, and let you sleep there for rest of the night, to keep you safe.
and it had been a while since she had someone sleep next to her.
instead, cassie got up and walked over to harrisonâs room, too lazy to change into her pajamas as she got into his bed, and watched her son peacefully rest.
harrison stirred awake for a moment, his eyes blinking open. âmom?â he whispered, getting closer to her. âyouâre sleeping with me?â
âis that okay, buddy?â
âmhmm, itâs okay,â he muttered, his eyes snapping back shut. âi like the new babysitter. can we keep her?â
cassie sighed, knowing you taking care of him was a temporary thing, and was afraid of him getting attached, too.
âwe can, yeah. we can keep her,â she whispered, kissing his forehead before letting exhaustion claim her entirely, and she passed out next to him.
you woke up before cassie and harrison did, being glad it was the weekend and your day off, not having to worry about missing your shift. you hurried out of her apartment, and straight to your car, not noticing tears were falling down your cheeks.
you got into your car, your hands shaking as you started the engine and put on your seatbelt, not wanting to go home just yet.
you were panicking, your head spinning everywhere. why did you only feel pure guilt when it came to cassie? you felt guilty for wanting to stay ten minutes longer in her bed, you felt guilty that you wish you were waking up to her, and not to aubrey.
after twenty minutes of driving around to clear your head and to stop crying, you finally showed up back home. you walked into your apartment, finding aubrey already sitting on the couch, and was waiting for you.
âi passed out at cassieâsââ
âi called and texted you numerous times,â aubrey cut you off, slowly getting up. âi almost went over there to grab you because i was worried.â
âthe long shifts and barely any rest finally caught up to me,â you said, taking off your shoes and coat. âit wonât happen again, i swear. iâm back now, arenât i?â
âit wonât happen again because i donât want you helping cassie anymore,â aubrey stated, and you just stared at her, almost as if a mother was grounding you. âyouâre getting too close to her and youâre always with her, no matter what.â
âsheâs my mentor and a friend? iâd do the same if trinity, victoria, or samira had a kid,â you protested, shaking your head. âi also stay behind to help whitaker, mel, or even give a hand to the night shift. you donât have a problem with them.â
âtheyâre not picking you up from your home, having you sleep at their houseââ
âi told you i passed outââ
âmy decision is final!â aubrey shouted, and you flinched, swallowing thickly. âno more cassie, none of that. if i find out you have helped her one more time, iâm walking out.â
you listened. you didnât want aubrey to walk out, but it immensely pained you to distance yourself from cassie.
you could tell she was wondering why you pulled away, why you had to decline babysitting for harrison ever again (even when she told you he wanted to âkeep youâ) â you just slowly exited out of cassieâs life without giving an explanation.
it was only about three months since the last time you properly spoke to cassie, and in those three months, your relationship drastically strained further.
aubrey would sleep on the couch on nights where you had an unprompted fight or make any excuse to go visit her family that was in another state.
more and more, you were slowly coming home to an empty apartment.
you were nearly an hour away from being completed with your shift, only to do it all over again the next day. you dreaded going back to your place, considering if trinity and whitaker would let you crash at their place for a night.
you were casually roaming around the emergency department, looking down at the tablet as you were on your way to see your next patient until a hand was grabbing at your bicep, and harshly tugging you in a different direction.
âouch!â you yelped, recognizing the hand immediately. âcan you let go of me? i have to go discharge someone.â
cassie pulled you into a vacant room, the lights in it off and she covered the doorâs window with the curtains. âare you going to tell me whatâs going on?â she asked, eyes snapping directly into yours.
âi have no idea what youâre talking about.â
âyes you do,â she stated, taking a single step closer towards you as you were still in your spot. âmonths ago, you were at my side, making offers to help me, and nowâ now, you only speak to me if weâre helping a patient together in the trauma area.â
âbecause weâre coworkers, and our job is to help people,â you bluntly said, afraid to avoid any eye contact. ânow if youâll excuse me, dr. mckayââ
âyouâre not excused,â she spat, shielding you from exiting through the door. âtell me why you wonât speak to me anymore. harrison misses you, i miss you. whatâs going on?â
your heartbeat was in your throat, picking up every second that passed by, and you tried to come up with any believable lie that you know she would buy, but it was impossible â cassie would always see through you, and your words.
âi just⊠i canât be talking to you,â is all you managed to say, tears at the brim of your waterline. âcan i please go?â
âonly if you tell me that you donât miss me,â cassie said, and your eyes snapped back into hers, only realizing how close she was to you.
of course you missed her. you miss the car rides together, especially if they were spent in silence because at least she was there. you miss exchanging secrets and stories, ones that you hadnât yet told aubrey. you miss that night when you felt yourself being lifted into her arms as she held you close, and the sound of her heartbeat was the similar sound of a peaceful night.
you miss her. you miss her than you know youâre supposed to â so much so that an entirety of guilt is washing over for how much youâre letting your body let her know that you need her.
youâre ruining your whole life and relationship for someone who was only supposed to be your mentor, and you donât understand how you let yourself reach this point.
âi miss you,â you whispered, not second guessing or hesitating â direct and adamant with every single word. âi miss you so much, cassie.â
the guilt morphed itself into a hast of desire the moment cassieâs head dipped lower and her lips met yours, her hands meeting your waist.
your lips and mouth met her desperate pace of kissing, and every moral and good deed you learned over the years, went right out of the hospital room.
cassie picked you up and sat on the edge of the hospital bed, and you moaned into her mouth once her hands went under your shirt.
your hands met the back of her head, fingers curling into her hair, and pulling her in closer as if she was too far.
it was wrong what you were doing, being unfaithful to your relationship and to aubrey â but god, youâd be a definite liar if you were to say this isnât what youâve been waiting for since the first day.
this pure sin, that tasted and felt so right â a sensation that burned at your heart and soul, nothing you had never experienced in your time doing aubrey.
this sick, horrible sin and lie you were committing.
anyone could walk in, anyone could need this room at any moment, and surely you were violating every hospital policy by doing this. if anyone walked in â trinity, victoria, robby â anyone could tell aubrey.
âwait, wait!â you panicked, breaking apart the kiss, and cassie studied the visible worry on your face, her eyebrows furrowing. âi canât do this, i canât. iâm so, so sorry.â
âwait, what do you meââ
âi have to go,â you hopped off the bed, pressing your fingertips to your lips as you looked at her for a brief second. âwe just canât do this, iâm so sorry, cassie.â
you ran out of the room, leaving behind a puzzled, upset cassie, who only stayed in there to look over what had happen, and wondered if you were filled with sudden regret.
you accidentally bumped into someone of your way out, profusely apologizing while tears were unknowingly falling down your face.
âhey, are you okay?â trinityâs voice came to your ears, trying to get you to look at her. âwhatâs wrong, whatâs going on?â
âi think i need to leave early,â you mumbled, sniffling. âis it okay if i crash at your and whitakerâs place for the night?â
trinity hummed, nodding. âyeah, of course. go to whitaker and ask for the apartment key. weâll see you once weâre off.â
before you and trinity could walk your separate ways, cassie came out and caught both yours and trinityâs attention. trinity glared at her, and then back at you before scoffing in disbelief.
âiâm not going to ask or anything. go to my place and think about everything,â she said, walking past you, and you had to use forceful energy to get yourself walking out of the hospital.
it didnât take long until you heard on the fourth of the july shift that cassie accepted a date from a male patient, and it didnât take long for you to lock yourself in a janitorâs closet to cry for about fifteen minutes.
it had been a few weeks since the secret kiss took place in the hospital room, and you willingly switched to night shifts for those weeks until robby insisted he needed you back on your regular schedule.
your first day back, cassie has a date, and your relationship with aubrey was volatile and complex.
you didnât pry anyone for any information after the fourth because a part of you knew you had to move on â until it was victoriaâs twenty-first birthday party, and perlah and princess invited about anyone who could make it.
which meant cassie would be there too.
trinity took the liberty of helping plan it, but did an after party â which began with a nightclub. you worried about cassie joining because she was sober and if being around alcohol could tempt her in any way, but she insisted on being the designated driver, and knew she could hold herself together in such a scene.
you had been texted that you would be the first one picked up before anyone else. it was nearly towards eleven at night, and you had immensely pregamed for the sake of having to see cassie and be in a car with her.
there was a knock on your apartmentâs front door, and you grabbed your purse, double-checking you had everything in it.
you opened up the door, revealing cassie who was wearing a white button up shirt that was loose and had a few buttons unclasped, and dark-denim washed jeans.
the chain she always wore was visible, her chest and collarbones beautiful, and covered with faded freckles.
you could feel your mouth watering, and your eyes gawking.
âhey, you have everything?â she asked, and you slowly nodded, stepping out of your apartment. âyou look nice.â
âthanks,â you mumbled, locking the door. âis it too much?â
you didnât intentionally wear a tight, black bandage dress only for her to notice and see, for her to compliment.
but all she had say was that you look nice.
ânever too much,â she said, the two of you walking to her car. âi thought aubrey would be joining?â
âshe had a work conference out of town, so sheâll gone for some days,â you explained, and cassie awed, the journey being visited with silence once more.
it was going to be a long night.
the moment you got to the car, cassie was opening the passenger side for you, and you stopped in your tracks for a second.
âwhat is it?â she asked.
âi can open the door myself,â you told her, and that got a grin out of her.
âjust let me do this for you, okay?â she said, and you huffed, getting into the passenger seat. she closed the door as you put on your seatbelt, and she got into the driverâs side shortly after. âiâm guessing everyone is at santosâ apartment?â
âyeah, give me your phone so i can put her address inââ
âitâs okay, i know how to get there,â she bluntly said, driving out of the parking garage, and you stared at you for seconds, trying to wonder how she knew where trinity lived.
you never had her pick you up or drop you off there, and surely cassie herself has never been over.
âhow?â
âhow what?â
âhow do you know where she lives?â you asked.
âbecause i just do,â she answered, and you sat comfortably back in the seat, looking at the road ahead of you.
âhow was your date?â you blurted out, sighing heavily. âword spreads easily around the department.â
âit was⊠fine. he was nice, iâm supposed to be seeing him again in a few days,â cassie said, and you contemplated on opening the car door, just to jump out onto the main road. âheâs a good guy, but iâll wait until it gets serious.â
âitâs not serious now?â you asked.
âit was only one hangout,â she answered, shrugging. âi donât know, itâs been a while since iâve dated.â
the multiple shots of tequila and gin were catching up to you, about to cause you to vomit all in her car because she wants to a date a man.
a man.
did she suddenly forget about the kiss? how her hands were aching to going on your thighs just for them to be only in between them â how could she forget?
the rest of the car drive was spent in silence, and you had texted the group chat the moment you were parked outside of whitakerâs and santosâ shared apartment.
minutes later, you heard your friends excitedly cheering, and a semi-drunk victoria was being pushed into the backseat first.
âhope you two didnât fuck before getting here,â santos said while getting in last, whitaker being in the middle of the girls. âiâm obviously kidding.â
âiâm in a relationship and cassie likes her little date,â you retorted, bitterness edging at the tone of your voice as you glared at cassie. âhow drunk is vic?â
âwe found out daiquiris and sunset tequilas are her go-toâs,â whitaker said, and victoria was mindlessly giggling, staring outside the car window. âletâs get going to the club please.â
âdid we find out if samira is going?â you asked as cassie began to make her drive to the nightclub.
âabbot is dropping her off,â santos answered, and you turned around to look at her. âare you guys not aware that theyâve been going at is since the day after our first day?â
âpainfully aware,â cassie said. âsometimes itâs just easy for some people to realize that another person wants them.â
âdid someone not want you, and you went to date some guy because of it?â you shot back, sitting back normally in your seat.
your friends in the backseat could sense the harsh tension between you and cassie, side eyeing one another with the rest of the time to the place spent in absolute silence.
by the time everyone got into the nightclub, victoria was dragging you, samira, and trinity onto the dance floor with her, and whitaker stayed behind with cassie at the bar area for observation.
they separately sipped on a glass of diet coke, making brief conversation here and there.
âis there something going on between you two?â whitaker asked, and cassie slightly looked at him. âpromise iâm not judging, but sheâs been a mess for a while now.â
cassie knew how to keep her eyes on you in the crowd, never taking them off of you, not even for a second as she cracked a smile to you having fun and taking shots with your friends.
âwhat do you mean sheâs been a mess?â she asked. âi thought she was doing okay.â
âno, man, no. her and aubrey,â whitaker sighed heavily, âtheyâve been having problems for months, and aubrey keeps finding reasons to leave her alone in their apartment. i just know everything between them is bad.â
cassie now felt like a fucking dick, but she knew she was to blame for all of it. she turned your once happy relationship into a disaster, and now you were slowly losing it because of her.
âis that why she switched to the night shift?â cassie wondered, and whitaker slowly nodded, looking down at his drink. âand is that why sheâs always at your apartment?â
âshe told us you kissed her,â whitaker said, clearing his throat. âshe didnât come out of our spare room for about two days after it.â
cassie put her drink down on the bar counter, and shoved herself through the overloaded crowd, making her way directly towards you.
the moment she was next to you and your friends, she grabbed you by your waist and forcefully turned you to look at her.
âcassie? whatââ
âwhy didnât you tell me what was happening?â cassie asked, and she could tell you knew exactly what she was referring to. âif i knew it was that bad, if i was ruining youââ
âwhy would i tell you?â you asked, eyebrows drawn together in confusion. âyouâre planning on dating someone, iâm with aubrey who forbids me from speaking to you, andââ
âshe did what?â cassie asked, a hint of anger displaying itself in her words and voice. âand you listened?â
you only nodded, and cassie scoffed, the two of you continuously looking at one another.
âwe canât do this, cass,â you said, frowning. âitâd be wrong.â
âbut youâve thought about it,â she pointed out, and it only took a few seconds before you nodded in agreement.
âsince the day that i met you,â you admitted, and without another word, she was pulling you away from your friends.
she stopped for a second in front of whitaker, handing him her car keys. âyou can drop it off at my place in the morning. iâll text you my address,â she said as he took a double look at her and you, and how she was holding onto your hands.
âokay, i will,â he said, and cassie thanked him as she rushed the two of you out of the venue.
âcassie, where are we going!â you shouted, getting entirely dragged outside. âi was having fun!â
âweâre going back to my place,â she stated, waving down a taxi. âwe donât have to do anything, but we need to have an actual talk.â
you went along with her, and you didnât second guess getting into the taxi before she did. you sat in the middle seat while she was next to you, your head on her shoulder, and you grew more anxious with each minute that pass, which meant getting closer to her place.
your pounding heartbeat sobered you up, and the second the taxi was parked outside of her apartment complex, it felt like the world was closing in on you.
cassie paid the driver before she was grabbing your hand to get you out of the car, the both of you walking in absolute silence all the way to her apartment.
she opened up the front door, letting you in first and stepped in right behind you, closing the door shut shortly after.
âwhereâs harrison?â you wondered, putting your purse on the coat rack, and taking off your heels.
âhis dad took him to a basketball game tonight,â cassie responded, tossing off her own pair of shoes that went into a pile with yours. âheâll be back tomorrow afternoon.â
âi shouldnât even be here,â you muttered, and cassie held your hand as she brought you over to her couch, sitting you down close to her. âaubrey would breakup with me if she knew about this.â
âbut youâre not going to tell her, are you?â she wondered, and you shook your head. you and cassie stared at one another, your legs mindlessly resting on her lap, and you sniffed. âwhy didnât you tell me about any of it? i wouldâve backed off.â
âthatâs not what i wanted to begin with. but aubreyâs been my partner since i was nineteen,â you explained, frowning to yourself. âiâm being unfaithful and pathetic; iâm a cheater.â
âi kissed you.â
âbut i continued it,â you stated. âi let it happen, and i only stopped because i was worried about getting caught.â
silence shifted into the room, sitting amongst the two of you for what felt like dragging minutes, and your head spiraled with a multitude of thoughts â if you should get out, if you should stay.
a taunting, teasing tension settled itself in the atmosphere and laid there, waiting for either of you to notice, and take initiative from it.
you didnât want to be a cheater, you didnât want that. god, you felt like youâd actually have to go church to pray and confess it away.
but thereâd be no point because a part of you knew that you would want to be next to cassie over again â and another part of you knew this damning feeling and situation that was incredibly wrong, felt entirely right.
you were sure of this one thing â and it could cost you everything.
you got onto cassieâs lap and straddled it, catching her by surprise as her hands rested on your waist like a natural reflex, and you looked at her.
âwhat would this be?â you asked. âan affair? like a casual one?â
âwhatever you want; iâm all yours,â cassie stated, and a smile twitched on your lips. she slightly lifted herself up, a needy kiss being pressed to your mouth as you accepted it, and immediately gave into it.
cassieâs hands rested in between your thighs, softly running them up and down, with your fingers playing with the buttons of her shirts, unclasping them in a hurry.
you could deal with the consequences and guilt later in the morning because you needed this, you needed cassie â the woman you would think about everyday and night, who would consume your thoughts since the start.
youâre standing at the kitchen counter with the knife in your hand, chopping carrots into even little chunks because dinner was supposed to be the one normal thing after your own long day. the apartment smells like onions you already threw in the pan and the faint garlic youâre about to add.
your shoulders ache a little from leaning over the board but itâs nothing compared to what you know cassieâs dealing with right now. twelve hours in the ptmc, the kind of shift that leaves her eyes hollow and her scrubs smelling like antiseptic and sweat.
the front door clicks open and you hear her bag hit the floor heavier than usual, keys clinking on the hook by the door. no hello, no tired hey baby like some nights. her socked feet come straight across the linoleum and then her arms are sliding around your waist from behind, solid and warm.
her face presses right into the side of your neck, nose cold from the air outside, breath hot and shaky against your skin. âfuck,â she mumbles, the word dragging out low and rough like itâs been sitting in her chest all day. her hips nudge forward, slow at first, and you feel the hard press of her cock through the thin scrub pants, already thick and insistent against your ass. sheâs breathing heavier now, like the whole shift is still crawling under her skin.
you let out a soft laugh, the knife still moving because youâre trying to finish this one carrot at least. âhi to you too. iâm kind of in the middle of dinner here, cass.â
she doesnât pull back. instead her arms tighten a fraction and she makes this little whine in the back of her throat, needy and pathetic. her hands slip under the hem of your shirt, palms flat and warm on your stomach, thumbs stroking slow circles. âdonât care,â she says, voice muffled against your neck, low and gravelly.
âmissed you so fucking much. whole day just⊠needed this. needed you.â her mouth moves, open and wet, teeth grazing the skin right below your ear like sheâs fighting not to bite down harder. you feel her cock twitch against you, and your pulse kicks up even though youâre still pretending to focus on the cutting board.
you set the knife down but donât turn around yet, mostly because you like the way sheâs clinging. âyouâre gonna make me burn the onions if you keep doing that, you know.â
âlet them burn,â she mutters, one hand sliding lower, fingers dipping just under the waistband of your shorts, not pushing in but teasing the edge like she canât help herself. her hips rock forward again, slower this time, grinding against your ass with quiet desperation that makes heat pool low in your belly. âplease, baby. i was in that fucking bay for three straight hours, elbow-deep in some guyâs chest, and all i could think about was coming home and burying myself in you..â
her voice cracks on the last word and she hides it by kissing your neck harder, sucking a mark there that you know youâll feel later. her free hand comes up to cup your breast over your shirt, thumb brushing your nipple through the fabric until it tightens under her touch and she lets out a shaky breath.
you tilt your head to the side to give her more room, even though part of you is still playing at being busy. âyouâre quite bratty when youâre stressed, mckay.â you tease.
she huffs a laugh that turns into another soft whine when you shift your weight back against her on purpose. âi know, i know. iâm sorry. just⊠fuck, you smell good and iâm so hard it hurts. been like this since i got in the car.â her hand cups you fully over your shorts, palm pressing warm and firm, rubbing slow and needy like sheâs trying to feel how wet youâre already getting for her.
you have to bite your lip to keep from moaning outright and grind against her hand. sheâs trembling just a little and you feel her cock nudge again, leaking probably, the fabric between you doing nothing to hide how much she needs this.
it goes on like that for a while, her mouth on your neck, her hands everywhere they can reach without actually pulling your clothes off yet, her hips rolling against you in these lazy needy grinds that have you gripping the counter edge. you can hear her breathing get rougher, feel the way her cock throbs every time you push back.
finally you turn in her arms to face her, you catch how dark her eyes are, pupils blown wide, hair all messy. she looks at you like youâre the only steady thing left in the whole world. you reach up and cup her face, thumbs brushing over her cheekbones, and she leans into it like sheâs starving for the touch.
âokay, fine,â you say, voice softer now. âbut youâre gonna apologize later when i have to start this whole dinner over from scratch.â
âpromise,â she breathes and grins, already leaning in for a kiss. you smirk and back away and she just chases your lips with this pathetic look, lips pouting. you huff a laugh and lean in to kiss her, tongue sliding against yours like sheâs trying to taste every second she missed today. her hands grip your hips hard and she walks you backward until your back hits the counter.
you donât even think about it, you just drop to your knees on the kitchen floor because you can tell how bad she needs this, and you want to give it to her.
her scrub pants are loose enough that you tug the waistband down, then the boxers. her cock springs free, flushed dark and heavy, curving up toward her stomach, the head already shiny with precum. sheâs so hard it looks almost painful, veins standing out, and she lets out this relieved groan when the air hits it.
you donât tease her anymore. you take her in your mouth, warm and wet, tongue flat against the underside as you slide down as far as you can. cassieâs hand flies to your hair to hold on like she needs the anchor. âshit- yeah⊠like that, baby,â she groans, hips twitching forward before she catches herself and tries to stay still.
you hollow your cheeks and suck harder, tasting the salt of her, feeling the way she throbs heavy on your tongue. her other hand braces on the counter above you, knuckles going white. you look up through your lashes and sheâs watching you with her mouth open, eyes half-lidded, a small furrow between her eyebrows like sheâs barely holding it together.
you take her deeper, nose brushing the soft hair at the base, and she lets out this broken sound that goes straight between your legs. âyouâre so fucking good- god, your mouth, baby...â sheâs rocking her hips, shallow little thrusts she canât help, and you let her, relaxing your throat and swallowing around her while your hands slide up her thighs.
you pull back just enough to swirl your tongue over the head, licking up the precum leaking steadily now, and she curses under her breath, fingers tightening in your hair.
after a few more minutes her rhythm gets uneven, hips stuttering. âgonna- fuck, iâm close already, baby, iâm sorry,â she warns, voice wrecked and apologetic like she feels bad for not lasting longer. you donât pull off. you just hum around her, one hand coming up to stroke the base in time with your mouth, and thatâs all it takes. she comes with a choked moan, pulsing hot down your throat, and you swallow every drop, stroking her hips until sheâs shuddering and oversensitive, thighs trembling.
she hauls you up before you can even wipe your mouth, kissing you like she wants to taste herself on your tongue, hands already shoving your shorts and underwear down your legs. âbedroom,â she mumbles against your lips, but the couch is closer so youâre already tugging her that way, pushing her down onto the cushions.
you straddle her lap fast, kicking the rest of your clothes off somewhere on the floor. her cock is still hard. god, her libido after a shift like this never stops being ridiculous. she grips your thighs, thumbs digging in as you line yourself up and she looks at you with heavy love struck eyes.
you sink down onto her in one slow glide, both of you groaning at the stretch. sheâs thick, hot and fills you so perfectly it makes your head spin. you rock your hips once, twice, getting used to it, feeling the way she throbs inside you, and then cassieâs hands slide to your ass and she starts moving.
itâs not gentle. she fucks up into you hard, chasing the feeling. the couch creaks under you. your hands brace on her shoulders, nails digging through her scrub top, and she buries her face in your neck again, mouth open and hot against your skin. every thrust punches the air out of you, squelching and loud, her cock dragging right against the spot inside you that makes sparks shoot up your spine.
âsorry⊠fuck, sorry if iâm too rough,â she pants, but her hips donât slow at all. she bites your shoulder, then kisses the same spot right after like she canât decide between devouring you and taking care of you. you laugh breathlessly, rolling your hips down to meet her thrust for thrust, one hand sliding into her hair to tug her head back so you can look at her.
âdonât,â you tell her, voice shaky but steady enough. âfeels so good, cass. harder- fuck! just like that⊠such a good girl for me,â you mumble.
she groans loud at that, eyes fluttering half-shut, and flips you suddenly so youâre laid out on the couch cushions. she hooks one of your legs over her elbow, you arch up with a moan that sounds nothing like you. sheâs sweating, hair sticking to her forehead, eyes locked on where her cock disappears inside you over and over, shiny with how wet you are. âyouâre so fucking wet,â she mutters, voice rough and low. âtaking me so well...â
you reach up and pull her down into an open-mouthed kiss, tongues sliding while she keeps pounding into you. your free hand slides between your bodies, finding your clit and rubbing tight circles, she notices and replace your fingers with her own thumb without missing a beat. youâre clenching around her, legs shaking, telling her between gasps how full she makes you feel, how you love when she gets like this.
âcome on, baby,â she whispers against your mouth, voice cracking with how close she is. âwanna feel you come around me. please, please⊠please let me feel it.â
you come hard, clenching down on her cock as the orgasm crashes through you, thighs threatening to lock but sheâs holding you open with a bruising grip. she keeps fucking you, hips stuttering but never stopping, until sheâs coming as well. she buries herself deep, groaning low into your neck while blabbering about how much she loves you and your pussy, hips jerking with every pulse as you feel her spill inside you.
you wrap your arms around her back, holding her close while she shakes, nails dragging lightly down her spine under the scrubs.
after a minute she pulls out slow, careful even though sheâs still catching her breath, and collapses half on top of you, face tucked into your shoulder. one hand strokes lazy circles on your stomach like sheâs apologizing with touch instead of words. âsorry,â she mumbles again, softer, breath warm against your skin. âdidnât mean to jump you the second i walked in. shift was just⊠a lot. i needed you so bad it was all i could think about.â
you run your fingers through her messy hair, smiling even though she canât see it, your body still buzzing. âi know, itâs okay. i like feeling needed by you.â you pause, then add with a little laugh, voice still hoarse, âbut weâre definitely ordering takeout now. dinner is not getting salvaged.â
she huffs against your skin, presses a slow kiss to your collarbone, âyeah⊠takeout. in a minute.â her hand slides down your arm, thumb brushing your skin. âjust stay like this a little longer, okay? donât move yet.â
you hum and close your eyes for a few minutes. cassieâs breathing evens out against your neck, her body heavy and warm on yours, one leg tangled with yours. you let yourself sink into the quiet, fingers tracing the line of her spine under her scrubs, feeling the way she relaxes bit by bit.
