last   time   this   happened,   it   was   ned   asking   for   a   kiss   ——   but   instead   of   what   he   was   hoping   for,   mason   pulled   a   hershey’s   kiss   from   his   pocket.   what   a   clever   boy.   sadly,   ned   didn’t   have   any   chocolate   on   his   person,   so   the   kiss   would   be   more   literal.    “   you   don’t   have   to   ask   me   twice.   ”    the   piemaker   grins,   stepping   closer   to   mason   and   closing   any   space   between   them,   hands   resting   against   his   cheeks   as   he   presses   a   gentle   kiss   to   his   husband’s   lips.    “   there.   ”    he   says   after   pulling   away,   resting   his   forehead   against   mason’s.    “   do   you   want   another?   ”

ah   ,   &   he   is   victorious.   motioning   for   the   pie   maker   to   follow   ,   mason   walks   over   to   where   the   espresso   machine   was   stationed   ,   already   moving   to   grab   a   small   porcelain   cup   of   coffee   &   the   portafilter   they   would   need   to   begin   making   the   espresso.   ❝   alright   ,   so   it’s   pretty   easy.   you   take   this   little   doodad   &   make   sure   the   basket   is   secure   inside   it.   then   you’re   gonna   take   some   pre   -   grounded   coffee   &   you   pour   it   in   here   up   to   a   fill   line.   ❞   he   does   this   as   he   speaks   ,   moving   slow   so   that   the   piemaker   could   see   him   fully   in   action.   ❝   then   you   take   the   tamper   &   mash   it   into   the   portafilter   so   it’s   nice   &   smooth.   you   stick   in   the   machine   ,   make   sure   it’s   nice   &   tight   &   then   you   let   the   shot   run   into   the   cup.   you   do   it   once   ,   it’s   one   shot   &   you   keep   doing   it   until   you   get   the   shots   you   need   for   the   coffee.   ❞   moving   away   from   the   coffee   ,   he   moves   to   the   little   metal   wand   at   the   side   ,   flicking   at   it   gently.   ❝   this   is   the   steam   wand.   it’s   what   you   use   to   make   the   milk   warm   &   foamy.   usually   as   you   run   shots   ,   you’ll   steam   your   milk   at   the   same   time.   if   anyone   wants   a   special   syrup   flavor   ,   you   add   that   in   but   other   than   that   ,   that’s   really   all   there   is   too   it.   ❞   a   pause   ,   smiling.   ❝   i   mean   ,   it’s   not   all   there   is.   it   takes   practice   to   really   master   it.   obviously   i   wouldn’t   want   you   to   think   it’s   too   easy   or   you   won’t   need   me   anymore   &   that   would   suck.   ❞   mason   pouts   ,   though   he   quickly   drops   the   act   as   he   motions   for   ned   to   come   closer.   initially   he   almost   reaches   out   to   take   him   by   the   wrist   &   tug   him   closer   ,   but   stops   himself   ,   remembering   ned’s   aversion   to   touch.   that   was   a   close   call.   ❝   you   wanna   give   it   a   try   ?   c'mon   boss   man   ,   don’t   be   shy.   ❞

as   mason   talks,   he   starts   to   zone   out   a   bit   ——   not   because   he   found   him   talking   boring   (   as   if   he   could   find   mason   boring!   ),   but   because   there   were   so   many   steps   he   didn’t   get,   so   many   words   he’d   never   heard.   portafilter?   tamper?   steam   wand?   but   still,   ned   watches,   even   if   his   eyes   wander   away   from   the   espresso   machine   to   the   man   running   it.   part   of   him   was   confused   by   the   way   he   felt   for   mason,   seeing   as   he’d   never   felt   this   way   for   any   man   before,   but   the   other   part   of   him   welcomed   it   with   open   arms.   like   olive,   mason   was   friendly,   kind,   but   unlike   her,   he   didn’t   push   it   ——   where   olive   would   have   grabbed   him   and   tugged   him   closer,   mason   hesitated   before   stopping.   how   could   someone   who   barely   knew   him   know   him   so   well?    “   oh,   me?   ”    ned   looks   down   at   mason   then   the   machine,   feeling   his   face   flush   as   he   tries   to   remember   how   it   all   starts.    “   i   guess   i’ll   try.   it   starts   with   .   .   .   securing   the   basket?   and   then   .   .   .   ”    he   racks   his   brain,   trying   to   remember   something   that   had   been   shown   to   him   just   moments   earlier.    “   pour   the   coffee   in   this,   right?   ”

                    𝚍𝚞𝚔𝚎  𝚕𝚊𝚞𝚐𝚑𝚜   ,   kind-hearted   &   buoyant.            ❛        𝘁𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗸  𝗶  𝗺𝗶𝗴𝗵𝘁  𝗵𝗮𝘃𝗲  𝘁𝗼   take  you  up  on  that  offer   —   think  i  can  afford  some   time   to   sit   down   &   eat   for  a   bit.    what   do   𝙮𝙤𝙪     recommend   ?    seein’   as   how   you’re   …   clearly   an   expert.       ❜

“   well,   that   depends.   ”   this   is   a   spiel,   one   he’s   gone   through   more   times   than   he   cares   to   admit.    “   what   kind   of   fruits   do   you   like?   if   you’re   a   tropical   guy,   i’d   recommend   the   piña   colada   meringue.   if   you’re   into   the   classics,   i’d   recommend   the   cinnamon   apple   pie.   if   you’re   into   berries,   i’d   recommend   that   delicious   triple   berry   with   the   beautiful   latticework.   ”

                       ❛   lost?   no.   why   …   do   i   look   lost?   ❜   he   was   definitely   lost,   there   was   no  doubt   about   that.   but   admitting   it   aloud?   that   was   just   something   he   wasn’t   going   to   do.   ❛   just   …   taking   a   stroll,   that’s   all.   ❜

“   right   .   .   .   why   don’t   you   sit   down   and    get   your   bearings?   i’ll   have   olive   bring   you   a   slice   of   pie.   ”    a   pause.    “   are   you   an   apple   pie   kind   of   guy?   ”

mason   meant   what   he   said   ,   he   really   did   wish   he   could   marry   ned   right   this   very   second   ,   but   he   hadn’t   realized   just   how   possible   it   was   to   accomplish   that   desire   ,   not   until   ned   pointed   it   out   to   him.   we   could   elope.   we   could   do   it   right   now.   hazel   eyes   widen   a   bit   as   he   considers   ned’s   proposal   (   another   one.   how   lucky   is   he   ?   )   ,   liking   the   idea   more   &   more   as   he   thinks   about   it.   they   had   planned   for   a   traditional   wedding   ,   but   the   idea   of   running   off   to   do   this   together   was   really   tempting   &   way   more   intimate   too.   a   loving   sigh   leaves   his   lips   as   he   watches   his   lover   kiss   his   hands   ━━   he   knew   just   how   to   get   to   him   ,   didn’t   he   ?   ❝   do   you   really   mean   that   ?   ❞   mason   asks   ,   wanting   to   make   sure   that   this   is   what   ned   wants.   the   last   thing   he   wants   is   any   room   for   regret.   he   definitely   wants   to   marry   ned   ,   he   knows   that   for   sure   ,   but   he   doesn’t   want   ned   to   miss   out   on   a   wedding   just   because   of   a   spontaneous   idea.   it’s   now   his   turn   to   take   ned’s   hands   up   to   his   lips   &   pepper   them   with   soft   kisses   ,   keeping   them   close   to   his   chest   as   he   speaks.   ❝   i   want   to.   i   really   do.   i’d   love   more   than   anything   to   just   do   this   now.   but   .   .   .   you   sure   you   don’t   want   a   wedding   ?   whatever   you   decide   ,   i’m   all   for   it   ,   but   i   just   need   you   to   be   sure.   ❞

“   i   mean   it   ——   more   than   anything   i’ve   ever   said   before.   ”    the   piemaker   loved   mason,   this   he   knew   ——   and   he   wanted   to   be   married   to   mason   more   than   anything.   they’d   started   their   wedding   preparations    already   (   hence   the   rings   ),   but   ned   didn’t   really   have   his   heart   in   a   massive   ceremony.   part   of   him   was   doing   because   he   thought   his   fiancé   wanted   it,   the   other   part   of   him   felt   like   he   had   to   have   some   big   wedding   because   there   was   no   other   option.   why   couldn’t   they   get   married   in   city   hall   somewhere   and   then   fly   off   to   their   honeymoon?   something   quick   to   declare   them   married,   something   personal   between   them,   then   flying   off   to   a   warm   paradise   for   a   few   weeks?   nothing   now.   ned   leans   down,   pressing   a   long   and   gentle   kiss   to   mason’s   lips,   finding   it   difficult   to   keep   them   from   curving   into   a   big   smile.    “   i’m   sure.   i   don’t   need   or   even   want   a   big   celebration   ——   i   just   want   to   be   your   husband.   ”    he   leans   in   to   kiss   him   again,   this   one   shorter   than   the   first.    “   and   if   you   want   the   same   thing,   why   wait   for   it?   why   don’t   we   just   marry   each   other   as   soon   as   possible?   ”
