For this final semester I already choose what kind of character I wanted for my TVC project and I choose a robot character for my TVC project. The reason why I want to do a robot character, yes many people say robot character is easy to make but what make robot character hard to deal with is when we have to UV unwrap the mesh and I know it can be easy too if we planned what’s ahead of us. And also for this semester I challenge myself a bit more to change a bit on what the lecture has thought me rigging and I change it into my own style a bit, I also wanted to challenge myself how fast can I do my work.
The reason why I came up with this idea because i was told that it’s better if the product was link to the character itself. So I thought of since my character is a robot its better if my product could do something to my character. And I planned out a few ideas before my sticker charger, STRIGE idea. At first my idea was multi-purpose oil and my other idea was charging wax, but both got rejected since they need to do effect from Maya then my lecturer told me to think out of the box and imagine something that hasn’t exist yet and must link to my character.
I design my character to make it look simple but has a few interesting details such as their pivot joints of my character. I also choose a simple colour scheme for my character. Actually my character’s colour scheme I thought of making it has a dirty looking even though he is a mascot for my product. Usually mascots are quiet clean and new even if it’s a robot but I was told to make my character to look slightly dirtier in order to make it look more realistic for my TVC scenes, so that my character could be eye catching and look real at the time.
I planned out my TVC story as what my product can do, the only part that make me kept on redoing my storyboard is how to show that my product can charge electronic stuff and what it can do for daily purpose. As I redo my storyboard I planned that my mascot character is going to show someone about the sticker charger how it can charge electronic device. Though for all the redo finally it got accepted and I finally can start modeling my character.
When I started on modeling my character, I was thinking how I should start on my character. And I plan it out to start with that I might have problem with the most, so I start off with my character head. To me it might be a bit too hard to deal with it. I was planning to model my character and my product to make it look simple and easy to understand.
Although for robot character are easy and fast to model but there are things that mustn’t have for hard surface model like too curvy edges. For hard surface model mostly have sharp edge so I had to redo some part of character to make is more edgy looking.
So I planned out how I should deal with other parts of my character. And I also though how should I make my character interesting when I going to rig my character. I thought of make the leg and shoulder have a few pivot joint to make the character has interesting interactions for these parts of my robot character.
Though my character’s body did took me some time to UV unwrap but I still able to manage it in time. And I did as fast I can to texture my character, a simple yet intruding kind.
When I rig my character and it took more time than I expected since my character parts kept on flipping even messed the rig a bit so I have fix it, I completed my rigging for 2 weeks. Trial and error isn’t that bad and the good thing is I was able to know something new.
For my turntable pose was approved on the spot I show my lecturer but just a few changes and I can start rendering. I reuse my turntable to do my rigging reel, I did it as per usual since I familiar with Camtasia software, though it was a bit hard to do since we need our lecturer help to install the software and it took quite a time due to busy with other project. I did what I can do, I hopefully I can do things much more faster.
I did managed to finish my footage but I still have to do a few changes and so I have to reshoot some footage that need to be change. I reused some of my old footage that looked similar to my new footage. When come to tracking I was being a bit more careful since if I mess up one track every track might get effected. And also I try to do as fast as I can so that I will able to manage the time for my project, so that I complete it as fast I can. When I finish my, I straight away start on blocking my animation scenes.
Since my storyboard is complete so I went for shooting for my TVC and luckily it was sunny during my day to shoot. For real life shooting its hard to get the timing of the shoot right if we were to reshoot the same place and need the same time. Even though if we finish shooting it could be hard when we want to track using matchmover software and if a track messed up the whole track could be effect by it and mess the other tracks too.
Since I have the storyboard it’s easier for me to animate, I try to finish it on time and let my lecture check for changes need to make for my animation. Since my TVC isn’t long like the other I was able to finish some part faster and started on polishing my animated scene.
During my polishing of my animation, I may not be the best at it but it’s important to know since we need to know how to make our character move as smooth as possible. And how should the character body should face to see more on the camera, like e.g to see more details on the character.
It was quite successful at my end since I was able finish my work as fast as possible but for sound I’m not really good at it but I manage to handle it since I’m not used to do it and it’s a good experience to deal with.
MY CONCLUSION
I learned something new on the TVC project, on how TVC idea can be hard to think of the story and how to execute the plan. I also learn it’s not easy to make the character interact with a real human but it’s a good experience to learn. And also things like simple character maybe easy but at time some part of the character may be a time consuming like to fix some part and how should I plan ahead of my schedule. I also learn how to make a backup plan if the schedule being push forward or the deadline being shorten. I know sometimes doing your is fast is good but I also notice when im doing my work a fast as possible there are things that could damage my character such as my character rig messed up and it took more time to fix it, when I know about that I also wanted to have the knowledge how to fix those problems so that in the future if I have the same problems, I can fix it. This semester I learn a few important thing that could help me in the future. But I want to know more how on rigging not only simple rig for a robot maybe a bit more advance I want to have more knowledge.
