Though the temperature is a balmy 84 degrees and a cool wind stirred, many marchers fainted by the wayside. More than 1,700 is being treated at first aid tents or hospitals for ills such as ribs fractured in the crush, headaches and insect bites.

Also known as the March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom, the event is aimed to draw attention to continuing challenges and inequalities faced by African Americans a century after emancipation.
