it’s wednesday
feeling my soul wither up and die in my body as my friends compliment a piece i’m working on by saying “this is so realistic i didn’t even realize it was a painting at first!”
i appreciate the sentiment a lot, i really do. i know they mean well and i’m glad that they like what im working on. but i also abhor the idea that art is only good if it’s realistic and looks like something. if i wanted something that was photorealistic i would have taken a damn photo. i don’t just want to be a printer; i want to make art that captures feelings, ideas, and concepts the way that abstract and less realistic art does

something big is happening
THE TRUTH: art is inherently manipulative and artists are wicked evildoers who like to power trip off of controlling other people's emotions
oooh i forgot wip wednesday. for compensation here’s what i’ve been working on
there's art inside me trying to get out
um. hi.
+ an alt version that i like too much to put under the cut
^ that’s the face she would make if you were playing a dating simulator and you just said something remarkably uncool to her
i zoom in closer the closer i get to finishing
OK i don’t normally post stuff like this but there’s a first time for everything. let’s all go on a journey to paint my new notebook together <3
here’s what i started with. it’s 13x21cm. i knew i wanted to put something landscape-y on there but i wasn’t quite certain what at this point? i had to go through a couple of mockup designs digitally before i found one i liked
admittedly i only took one picture while i was actively working on it. i was so concentrated i didn’t even think to take wip pictures
i started with a gesso silhouette before moving to the grass. after that i just worked up. i didn’t do a sketch or guidelines or anything because i love pain and suffering
and this is where i ended for the day
im super happy with it so far, but i’ve still got to do the back cover and spine. i was worried the paint wouldn’t stick to the plastic wrapped cover but it did fine; it doesn’t feel ready to peel or chip either. i’m still going to seal it anyway. better safe than sorry
+ here’s it next to all of the colors i used if you’re one of those people who likes pallets. i’m going to try to take more in-progress pictures when i next work on it
i’ve started to lay out the base for the back and spine tonight. i expect i’ll run out of time and have to work on it tomorrow morning but c’est la vie
i ended up taking around the same amount of wip pictures as i did yesterday (one)
this was the point where i was thinking “oh god. i don’t know how to do any of this. i don’t know what im doing,” but i ended up going into that painting mediative state shortly after so it all worked out
and this is the finished product!
i’m soooo happy with how it turned out. it’s making me really excited to actually start using it, but i’ve not yet reached the end of my previous notebook so i can’t. unfortunately.
final thoughts: paint your things forever and ever. it’s fun. and then it’s uniquely yours :-)
