Well, maybe that wasn't completely true since Angel's parents were very well connected and had been determined to make their only child a superstar somehow, but she left that out. An heiress no doubt had just as many connections as she did, so she was sure April could have become a big star if she really wanted to.

"How many siblings do you have? I'm an only child so it's always weird to me to hear stories of people who grew up with brothers and sisters." She never really felt as though she'd missed out though because if she were to have siblings then she'd have to share the spotlight, and that was something Angel was simply not good at.

"Bonfamille, yes! You're telling me that family has ties to this town as well? I totally picked the right place to move then! And I'm definitely going to come see the play, I bet it's gonna be amazing!"

"Oh yeah. Adelaide moved when she divorced their dad. Lou and Ber live in London with their partners now. Ber is married to the Simba Lyons--their family founded the town. You'll see their name, like, everywhere. My family has been here for a while too.

I've got two sisters. We're triplets. And before you ask, no we're not identical. And yes, I am the middle one. Their names are May and June. "You should find out for yourself, I don't think it's anything worth writing home about. It's serviceable. My sister May is the real talent. I just got the gig because family. Oh, speaking of--we're both in the community theater production of Heathers in August. I know that sounds ridiculous and it kind of is. But, Swynlake goes all out.

Do you know the Bonfamille family? They're this French political family, but their mum is a famous opera singer from the 90s. Anyway, Adelaide Bonfamille just loves investing in the theater so the productions are like weirdly professional."

Collette squinted back.

“I have laid out the expectations. Did I make them unclear?”

Sometimes Collette found herself in a bit of a bind when it came to some of her students. Especially clever ones like Miss April. If she didn’t lay out the expectations exactly there was surely a way she would weasel her was around what Collette was really asking for.

“Three times a week. On time. Then yes….you will have your passing grade.”

Collette’s eyes squinted a bit more and raised a brow.

“You may actually start to like it. The spotlight or just performing.”

April slouched in her chair, pouting. This blew. Maybe she should just quit school. The triplets had been here for a year and they were closing in on Daphne. So, once that was taken care of and April had all the money in the world again, why would it matter?

She had never planned to get a degree anyway. She didn't think any of them really had.

Eventually, she sighed.

"I doubt it," April said skeptically, then popped up from her chair. "Merci, Ms. Collette. I'll see you for rehearsals tomorrow!" Maybe. Probably. If anything could be said for April, it was that she was a team player. She didn't want to embarrass May.

It was late, mostly everyone had left the theater after rehearsal had ended and notes given. The nervous energy of opening week lingered around the backstage and within the dressing rooms despite the vacancies– but there was still one set of mirror lights on, illuminating May von Drake as she organized her area so that it would be perfect for tomorrow!

And, of course, April, who May had forced to stay late with her by proxy.

When she felt she was finally ready to leave, the lights turned off and door shut behind them (the cutie Heather Chandler and Heather McNamara name ornament she'd made for them jostling), a wretched noise went screaming through the theater– one familiar and devastating all at the same time.

Feedback.

It lasted for too long before it finally cut off. May blinked, looking back and forth between the path toward the exit and toward the stage.

"It's probably nothing. Audio just being cheeky," she tried to smile. A beat. "...which means it wouldn't hurt to go make sure, right?"

She took April's hand, and whisked her back onto the stage.

April was lounging on the musty chaise lounge tucked into the corner of May's dressing room. (May had commendeered it for both of them, especially now that they were both Heathers, but in April's mind, it was still just May's.) She had her phone out and was watching TikToks out loud while May finished taking off all the stage make up.

They'd done a whole run through of the show today and April just wanted to go home, smoke a joint, and go to bed.

When May finally packed up shop, April popped up eagerly, following her sister out into the hallway.

As soon as the door clicked shut--

April jumped and yelped, like someone had prodded her in the back. "Ah! What the fuck?" she yelped, annoyed at the intrusive noise. Her heartrate slowed back to normal and she shook her head.

A little shiver ran up her spine at the sound. Or maybe that was something else entirely. Either way, April very much wanted to home.

May grabbed her hand and pulled her along. She stomped behind, pouting but follow.

"Yeah, sure, whatever," April said, already letting go of her plans.

Linnet had always loved Hell week.

Oh, it was hell in lots of ways, but heaven in others, at least for a proud theatre kid like Linnet Beau Blue. Back in the day, these weeks meant that she got to stay extra long in her favorite place-- the auditorium at West Charlotte High. She had laughed until she cried and snotted herself from the good times with her Creature Coven. So many stories, contained in them walls-- mistakes and struggles and tears and plenty of highs too. If it meant she didn't have to go home to her foster mother at the time, why, Linnet would have picked Hell in a flitter flat.

Hell week in Swynlake had lots of the same qualities. She loved all the extra time with the cast. She enjoyed the pressure-- it helped her understand oysters making their pearls.

But not everyone felt like that.

For example: Miss April von Drake. Now, Linnet didn't know her so well, but she liked her just fine and thought she was pretty sweet. She was the kind of girl who overlooked the Linnet Beau Blues of the world, on account of her dungarees and accent. April never said as much, but there was an unspoken truth between them-- they came from different worlds and weren't too interested in mixing 'em. That said, as Hell week went on, Linnet's eyes kept lingering on April. She didn't know why. Maybe just coincidence...

But she was starting to think maybe somethin' was goin' on. It was just a feeling, really! And April kept showing up late, so that didn't help. And she seemed to be laughin' a little too hard at times...

Linnet reckoned there was no harm in checking in.

"Er, hey! I was just askin' how you're feeling. About the solo," said Linnet. "I'm excited to hear you sing it!"

April had decided she was gonna be somewhere else for the time being. She needed to shut out all the noise of a busy stage. Every bang or shout was making her flinch, on the verge of a panic attack. Thankfully, April was very good at retreating to where she wanted to be.

With her eyes unfocused over the red velvet and gold seats of the theatre, she started imagining up somewhere better than here. An island, somewhere, in the Mediterranean. With cool blue waters and dark pebbled beaches. If she focused on the sound of her heart, she could pretend it was the ocean, lapping over the stones.

Someone spoke to her and she blinked, but the beach didn't go away. In her mind's eye, she was still sitting there, the water running over her toes. The person who appeared was wearing a long blue robe. They were smiling bright.

It was Linnet. Her face revealed as the clouds rolled over the sun.

"Oh, uh--" April shrugged. "It'll be fine. Just...trying to get through it," she sighed to her hallucination-Linnet. Had she done a bump of cocaine this morning? Huh. Maybe.

"Nice fit." She nodded to the robe.

April pulled away a bit, and Robbie shot her an apologetic pout, though his gaze was quick to follow hers around the room, eying the fine details that seemed to run through it - from the floor molding all the way up to the ceiling trim.

There was something timeless about it - the way that old architecture never seemed to appear out of date, but always just had a beauty to it no matter when you saw it. The room shared that same flair, drawing Robaire in as he stepped further onto those sturdy floors. A good base responding back with every step.

"Oh yeah? Wide open space like this must've been fun." He responded softly, glancing down and pressing some more weight onto his right foot, as if to test the structure before he did a lazy pirouette - facing back towards April at the end of it with a nod of his head. "...Pretty solid, actually. Does it uh-- see a lot of use? Surely people rent it out fairly often, eh?"

April's gaze fell back to Robbie when he spun. It reminded her of when she'd been a child and had spun and spun and spun. Like if she went fast enough, she could jump through time. At the time, all she had wanted to do was go forward. Become an adult, carve her own path. Now that she had just turned 20...she wanted the opposite. She wanted to rewind time, before abusive boyfriends, before spent inheritances, before her father had died.

"Oh yeah, all the time," April said. "For weddings or conferences. Whatever, really. I dunno. Mr. Moseby handles most of that. May has been helping over the summer. C'mon, there is more to see."

April abruptly grabbed Robbie's hand and pulled him back into the corridor. "Okay, what would you like to see next? The kitchens? The rooms? The laundry? The pool? The bars? There is one on the first floor and the third. Ooooh, or the restaurant."

It had been a while since Kim had partied like this and she figured April was the kind of girl who liked to forget about her troubles for at least one night. Kim could get down with that because she was trying to forget about something tonight.

"You're a triplet. Wow! That's pretty cool!" Kim would probably never understand how it felt to be a triplet or a multiple but she had tweebs for younger brothers which was a close second in her book. "Did you want to come back to Swynlake? It's a pretty strange town or so far that's the vibe I'm getting."

There was something about Swynlake that made Kim want to investigate to see what she could find out about the town, especially those shared town dreams because that was not normal no matter what anyone said.

"I'm from a small town called Middleton. My parents are both doctors in different fields. My dad is an aerospace engineer or rocket scientist as I like to call him and my mom is head of neurosurgery at the hospital she works at. I have younger brothers that I call tweebs because they're twins and dweebs." She joked about the last part, she did call them that but she was only allowed to do that - no one else.

Kim grabbed another shot as they came around, "You can ask me anything too."

April half listened to what Kim was saying. Not because she didn't like her or anything. April just...wasn't great at paying attention to anyone in a club. She was a distracted bloodhound, trying to sniff out the hardest drugs she could find.

Most of the time, she was a very good listener. May and June had always been such talkers. April had always been content to just...listen.

"Well what the hell are you doing here? I mean...I'm here because I was born here and my sisters are here. I dunno why you'd come here by choice," she snorted.

"Ohmygod, May, calm down," April said, shaking her head at May. "She was probably just drunk and in her heels. I've fallen down like a million times that way."

April didn't know if she believed her own words. It was one thing to break a wrist, but June had bruises and scratches in places that didn't look like a fall. It looked like she'd been fighting something (or someone) heavy and they'd won.

"Did you cut something? Where the hell is all this blood from?" June's white outfit was covered in it. (RIP to the cute outfit.) It looked like she'd been splattered with the blood, like the kind of thing you might find at a murder scene.

Which was weird...because it was hers...right?

"Of course he didn't!" June blurted, practically on top of April. Her head throbbed, her fingers on her right hand curling by her side into a tight fist. As tight as a tennis ball, though it was as useless as her fucked-up hand dangling from her fucked-up wrist.

Immediately, she wanted to take the lie back. It was like when she blew one of her serves and the ball didn't land where she wanted it to.

But she couldn't tell the truth. If she tried-- just more questions and... what would those two men do to her anyway?

Bloody hell, her head hurt.

"I hit my head too! Heads bleed a ton, you know that! You've seen Grey's Anatomy," June practically snapped at April. (It was true-- they'd spent several days watching Grey's marathons together after day drinks).

"It's-- it's really just a boring, embarassing story," she continued. "Don't ask me more about it, it just makes me feel like-- an idiot."

May didn't break her hard stare, even with the pair of them pushing back on her. What was she supposed to think with a story like that?

Well, she knew what she was supposed to think– she was supposed to believe her sister. There was no reason not to...other than that June was acting strange and May's gut wasn't satisfied with it. Paired with the fact that June had left, without telling either of them, on their birthday?

Her sister wouldn't want to protect some loser who would dare do something like this, though. But who knew? In a situation like this, maybe she was scared. May wouldn't blame her, but surely June knew May would nail this guy to a fucking wall if he had. Which was another reason June wouldn't lie.

She had to know her sisters would support her with anything. Mistakes and screw ups and all.

Which was why May was going to believe her sister.

And, anyway, June was probably devastated about her arm. She didn't need to be grilled at a time like this.

"Alright," she relented quietly, and softened again. "Oh, duck, I'm so sorry. You were brilliant this weekend, and to be rewarded like this? It's not fair."

April wrinkled her nose when June snapped at her. She was just asking a question! Geesh. Wanted to make sure her little sister wasn't bleeding out all over the place. April was a shit big sister a lot of the time (May outran her by a mile or more on that), but that didn't mean she didn't care. And she could fuss, if she wanted to.

She watched as May started cooing at June.

"Was she brilliant? It's not like she asked us to come watch," April said. Not that she was bitter. Except that she was. Now, she was, because it felt like June was keeping secrets. That she was drifting away.

She wasn't the only one, to be fair. April often felt like her secret kept her at arm's length from her sisters too.

But...it felt different on the other side of it. She wanted to help. Whatever mess June had gotten herself into, April would help her get back out.

"Sucks though," she added, pouting, but she reached out to grab June's uninjured hand and squeezed it.

The silence was one of April's greatest enemies. Along with expectations for her.

She hated the quiet. Maybe it was because she'd always had two other heartbeats in her ears. Once the girls had gotten old enough to start being their own entities, April had turned inward, towards music, to keep herself from feeling like she was disappearing. It reverberated through her body.

She loved clubs and concerts where she could feel the beat in her bones. Nothing was better than playing music, though. When April played the piano, she could see the music being woven like the notes were appearing to her. Like she was actually creating something beautiful. April, desperately, always wanted to be making noise--so that she didn't scream.

James' voice made her jump.

She hadn't realized he was there.

Her head turned towards him and she put her chin on her shoulder, smiling at him. She bat her eyes.

"If it's a good one," she challenged him.

James took the little jump she did on the chin– he knew it wasn't personal, or that he was particularly scary. He'd seen plenty of people get into the zone before, which meant he had seen them come out of it, too. More often than not they had to be startled back into reality.

Her answer was exactly what he had come to expect from her. It was starkly different from the music she had been playing. That had actually sounded real. Earnest. Something he hadn't known her capable of since they had been kids, unaware they could be anything else.

He wanted more of that for some reason.

James came out from behind the counter, made his way toward the back, and stopped beside the piano. His dark eyes were trained on the instrument as he did, until he finally came to a stop. Then he looked at von Drake, brows drawn slightly.

"What makes a song a good one to you?" he asked, not necessarily ignoring her challenge but this lacked his usual game play. No sarcasm. No playfulness. Just curiosity.

"Why would I give away all my secrets?" April said with a smile. "That's no fun."

It wasn't until after she said it and James stayed stoic, looking at her, did she huff and consider giving him an actual answer. April didn't try to keep things close to her chest. In fact, in a lot of ways, she felt like she was the complete opposite. April wore her heart on her sleeve, but that was different from her emotions. Those, she kept closely guarded. For the most part, they weren't the acceptable kind.

April always wanted to either be lazy or spontaneous. She had no ambition. She wasn't very smart or a good student. Really, she wasn't good at much of anything. So, she just tried not to think about it. April just wanted to coast through life. Too big emotions scared her, she avoided them.

Except when she played music or danced. April pushed all of her feelings into those things. She spoke with her body, with the rhythms it made. (Probably why she liked sex so much too. It was hard to be bad at. At least for girls.) That was her language. It was secret to most people. Ambiguous and up for interpretation.

She shrugged and turned back to the piano. Her fingers sat gently on the cool, yellowing ivory keys.

"The kinda song that makes you feel something."

After all, that was a team event too! And now he was leaving her in the deep end. She was gonna have to pick up his slack. Ugh. How annoying. If she did a bad job, she was going to be held back a year! That didn't matter when she was just in the chorus, but now that she was going to be one of the title characters--she had to actually do stuff.

And that was all Tae's fault.

She sounded annoyed. That made his stomach drop and for a moment he felt like he did just before he took flight as a dragon. That momentary adrenaline spike before everything went as it should.

But Taehyun could only apologize and move forward. He knew what he needed to do for himself. "Because I thought I could do everything. I was over confident," Taehyun replied with a grimace. "I'm sorry I've put it on you now, but I just... I have to prioritize." Something Dick would probably actually be pretty pleased with for a change.

"If you need help with the lines and stuff though I can help you," Taehyun offered softly.

April squealed as Nate jumped in and a splash of water sprayed everywhere. The squeal turned into a laugh, though. Her hair was already wet, piled on her head with a clip. She could be the prissy kind of girl who didn't like their hair wet in the pool, but not today! Today, she didn't mind at all.

"Also, it's my birthday," April pointed out, fluttering her eyelashes as she swam in a lazy circle around him. "So, you have to do what I ask."

Nate chuckled as she swam around him, "Your birthday wish is my command." He said with a grin, a hand darting out to grab her by the ankle and tug her towards him in the water.

He'd already been providing birthday wish services to June earlier. Fair was fair. He didn't know if May would have anything for him to carry out on birthday wish orders but if she wanted it, he would offer.

Right now, he was all about granting April's as he pulled her in and squeezed her in a hug.

It was Hell Week.

An appropriate term, if you asked April.

She had only barely learned her lines, but she was still working on the choreography. It should come easily to her. She was a dancer. Used to picking up steps quickly. It was either that or fall behind.

Which was the other piece of this. If April didn't nail this part, she was gonna get held back. And her sisters were gonna know. They would fuss and she would hate their fussing. April had never gotten amazing grades, but she'd always skated by with average marks.

She hadn't been able to focus since returning to Swynlake. Didn't want to focus. If she focused, all the things she didn't want to think about would start to crowd in. All the ghosts haunting her.

So, she smoked a joint and tried to stay chill.

They were running militantly through the cafeteria scene in the second act--basically the entire second part. This was the first run through, things were still getting tweaked, which meant that April's solo kept getting pushed and pushed.

The longer it took, the more antsy April was getting. Her high was gonna dissipate by the time it came to her part and what was she supposed to do then?

April sucked on her vape, trying to hide it by turning her body. The hit zapped her brain back into place. When she turned around, there was someone standing in front of her.

Not just anyone, though: Miss Veronica herself.

Maybe she should find an American surgeon to marry.

Hospital Kiki || The Ducklings

While riding in the car to the hospital with Kovu's mysterious goon, June was supposed to come up with a cover story.

"Dont mention a car accident," said the suspicious bloke gruffly. June had stared at his white knuckles on the steering wheel. Her eyes still rang from the impact. It was the last thing she remembered. That, and the bright light--- that sense of peace.

"I..." June's lips were cracked and dry. "What the fuck am I supposed to say then?"

"You fell down a hill, what do I care?"

"Why the fuck would I be on a hill at midnight--"

"Do not. Mention. A car accident. Do you hear me?"

June stared out the windshield and nodded stiffly.

That had been hours ago now, hours that June had to workshop something May and April might believe. And that was the problem. They were May and April-- the two people who knew her best in the entire world. She didn't even have any alcohol in her system to feign drunkenness.

Her brain shortcircuited again as April stared at her with her big, scared eyes.

"Midnight hook-up" said June. Each word felt like a jagged piece of glass as it left her mouth. "I was leaving and fell down their stairs."

Her eyes moved from searching for anyone in a pair of scrubs back to June after April's words touched the air, also interested in the answer. After all it was the question of the night. She had already asked it several times, only to hear I don't know, ma'am. Or, Sorry we can't tell you more, we weren't at the initial scene.

The answer that June gave was...

May didn't know what to make of it, because obviously that's what must have happened. Why would June lie to them?

But also, what?

It just seemed so unrealistic for some reason. And the hesitation before hadn't really helped.

So she waited for more. For June to go into blaming her shoes or how they could sue the building for a faulty hand railing or– something.

When she didn't May's eyes narrowed, blood growing cold. "You fell."

A beat.

"June," she said, steady. "Did they put hands on you?"

"Ohmygod, May, calm down," April said, shaking her head at May. "She was probably just drunk and in her heels. I've fallen down like a million times that way."

April didn't know if she believed her own words. It was one thing to break a wrist, but June had bruises and scratches in places that didn't look like a fall. It looked like she'd been fighting something (or someone) heavy and they'd won.

"Did you cut something? Where the hell is all this blood from?" June's white outfit was covered in it. (RIP to the cute outfit.) It looked like she'd been splattered with the blood, like the kind of thing you might find at a murder scene.

Which was weird...because it was hers...right?
