Donnie is me
Besties || closed - Aprilontherooftops
Phone lying in her lap she jolted up when it vibrated and read the message, giggling. “Good, I am sick of him hogging you lately. You need time to get your own homework done.” She began. “Twenty minutes? Awesome, see you there!” She ran to her bed and found a near by purple hoodie, stuffing the phone in the pocket. She called to her parents “I’m going out!” Slamming the front door before they had a chance to reply.
Time to get her own homework done.
Riiight.
April would be amazed if she graduated at this point.
Regardless, she waved good-bye to the boys as they moved on to the final six blocks of their route, t-phone in hand. The night would be peppered by semi-paranoid texts from Donnie, and she had long made her peace with that. There were worse things than an overprotective friend.. turtle.. thing. Whatever they were.
Moving on, she thought, forcing her thoughts forward to the evening ahead.
April took the most direct route she could, weaving from rooftop to rooftop, crossing three blocks faster than she could have dreamed of doing six months ago. She struggled to make herself presentable as she went, combing her hair with her fingers and tying it back up, rubbing the grime from her face and trying to make herself look less like she had recently been in a back-alley bar fight - which wasn't far from the truth, but still.
She wound around the south side of the shopping center she and her friends often frequented - mostly only for the arcade - and slowed to a trot, waving the instant she caught sight of a familiar purple-streaked bob.
"Irma!" she called.

Irma stared at her phone, casually pushing her glasses back up her nose as they threatened to fall. The phone vibrated again. “Please tell me thing you’re finishing is the homework and not tutoring Casey.” Irma typed quickly. “Mall sounds good. What time will you finish so I know when to meet you there?” Hitting send and she relaxed into the chair, head falling back to stare up at the ceiling while she waited for a reply.
April watched a goon go flying over her head, Casey's dorky-ass battle cry echoing around them. "Definitely not tutoring Jones," she texted with a grimace. He's doing fine on his own these days, April thought. The last of the Foot were giving up and melting into the night, scampering silently away like the faceless cogs they were. A good patrol, all in all.
"Just about done. Give me twenty minutes?" The boys could handle the rest of the sweep without her. Quiet nights were rare, and she was going to take advantage of it while she could.

It was a few moments before the phone vibrated and played April’s familiar tone. April always seemed to take longer to reply these days. At least it wasn’t like the time April lost her phone. Yet somehow ended up with a new phone shaped like a turtle shell that she wouldn’t explain. Irma was curious but respected April’s privacy enough not to push the issue.
Irma smirked reading over the message. “Nothing you can’t handle.” She began typing. “If you can focus on homework for more 5 minutes yet you always seem so distracted these days. Though we could be distracted together if you like. SO BORED.” Hitting send.
One of her boys had shouted for her, and April had jumped back into the fray, tessen flashing. She grunted as her phone jangled again, tripping a Foot directly into the range of Mikey's chain and digging for it as she spun.
"Totally bored," she replied, one handed. She wove neatly out of the way of a set of shuriken flying in the general direction of her face. "I've got a thing I need to finish, but wanna hang in a bit? Mall, maybe?"
"Time and place!" someone - probably Leo - was shouting, and April hit send and crouched back into a defensive stance, braced against Raph's carapace.
A girl has to have a social life, okay?

Don couldn’t help but smile more as he saw April’s eyes light up, playfully nudging her back while still laughing. “I guess we’ve both been so busy between your school and my experiments.” Donnie shrugged before bringing a finger to his chin as he thought for a moment. “I should probably be more alarmed those events sound like something out of a comic book.” He chuckled nervously, then nudged her again. “Friends.” He muttered.
He wasn’t sure if he was reassuring himself or reminding himself of that fact. Or if it made him sad or happy or both. Either way it wasn’t the worst thing that could happen.
A warm and delicate silence fell between them. April chewed at her lip. They had been through such hell lately, and maybe now wasn't the time, but was any time ever right for this discussion? She was tired of how awkward things had gotten, and she was tired of being angry with the most constant person in her life. She was so tired, of everything. It needed to stop.
So she wrapped her arms around one of Donnie's and leaned into him, letting her embrace take the sting out of the words that came next.
"We can't keep doing this," she said quietly. "You're my best friend, D. You're the smartest guy I know, but you've done some pretty dumb stuff lately. I need to know you have my back, you know? Just because you do, not because you're hoping for something else. I don't have anything else to give right now. To anyone."

Don burst out laughing at April’s reply. “And that’s when I use scientific analogies.” He grinned at her. He enjoyed the silent warmth of her body against his, sure she would pull away at any moment. Yet she lingered longer than expected which made Donnie curious but he didn’t dare open his mouth to ruin the moment. He felt his racing heart skip a beat when she pulled away before plummeting.
He mirrored her smile in spite of him self and rubbed the back of his head. “I wanted to.” He chuckled. Eyes darting away for a moment. ”Talk, I mean, to you. Like friends do.”
The sound of his laugh was bracing for April. It made her smile a little more real and a little less forced; it lit something in her eyes that, lately, she was starting to think she'd lost entirely. Affectionately, she elbowed her friend, settling in beside him as if that were the only place she ever wanted to be.
"That's not something we've done a lot of lately, huh? Talk, I mean." Her nose scrunched in thought. "Without something blowing up or someone trying to kill us or some shadowy stranger appearing out of no where to reveal my twist origins. We should work on that. Like friends do."

Irma stared at the pile of homework, leaning on her arms crossed over the desk, her eyes drifted to her computer screen, then to her phone. She sighed, sat up, heard the chair roll back slightly and began typing a message without looking. "Hey April, you done the homework?" She double checked her text before hitting send, if only because auto correct had lead to some weird conversations. Yet she was confident in her ability to type without looking. She smirked as the auto correct hadn’t muddled her message. Hitting send and stared down at the phone lying in her palm. Waiting for a vibration or a ring.
April was, at that moment, sort of indisposed. She attempted to duck into a graceful bow as a Foot lunged for her, but it wound up being more of a graceless dive to the ground. Fortunately, one Foot collided with another, and she managed to roll safely out of the way before they came crashing on top of her. Panting, she leaped for the tail of a fire escape, pulling herself out of the way of the fight.
Her phone was buzzing. Tossing sweat-soaked hair from her eyes, she dug it out of her pocket and scanned the messages. Irma! April's face lit up. If she had ever needed some normalcy, now was the time.
"Not yet," she texted. "How bad is it? I've been kind of preoccupied."
A foolish Foot came darting into range, and April answered his approach with a boot to the head. Satisfied, she hit send.

Don felt his heart skip a beat as April’s weight rested against him. Her hand squeezing his and he felt his face flushing. “T-Together.” He stuttered. “E-Exactly, it’s like learning ninjutsu, you master the basics then move onto the more complicated stuff, if you fall you just get up and try again.” He laughed nervously as he blabbered on. This felt nice he just wished his heart would stop racing. He could smell her hair, she was that close.
However in this moment as his eyes darted from her face to the skyline, all his fears of her leaving him for being a freak seemed to ebb away. Together, always, they’d get through this just like everything else since Donatello had come to the surface.
April almost wanted to laugh. It was absurd, but she did. The stutter, the sudden awkwardness, listening to him scramble for something he knew enough about to anchor himself - it was so hilariously out of place, so poorly timed. It was equal parts comforting, exasperating and something nearing hilarious. "Not everything can be explained through a ninjutsu analogy, Don," she murmured. Her voice was throaty, heavy with emotion as she struggled to recollect herself.
She should have pulled away. There was only so much time that could be considered acceptable for a friendly, bracing hug, and they were long past that, April realized. But she couldn't. She didn't want to. Every fiber of her being screamed out for contact, for sheltering arms and someone to tell her it would be okay; that these were things she couldn't allow herself to have anymore made it all the worse. So she stayed like that as the moments ticked by, savoring it, memorizing it, telling herself one shot at weakness was all she got. When she pulled away, she had to be strong again. She had to have it together. No more running away, no more crying alone on the rooftops. Just a few seconds more. 3, 2, 1...
Reluctantly, she broke the embrace, features arranged in a sort of grim determination. She hoped her smile seemed strong and certain, and not as frail as it felt.
"You didn't have to come find me," she said at last.

April still stared off at something on the skyline, he noticed her face wet and shiny from tears. He wanted to wipe them away. To take that and the pain away. What was she looking at? The greatness of the heavens to distract her from pain? Something beyond Donatello. Who or what was she thinking about?
Then came more questions and April’s usual strong confident voice cracking. Don then put his arm around her at the sound of that. “Possibly.” Don answered quickly. Knowing the Kraang, probably. “It’s difficult for me to tell when I don’t know the scientific process involved. Alien tech and all.” He realized he was blabbering from nervousness and let out a weak chuckle. “Hey, it’s not your fault.” His hand squeezing her gently as she hugged herself together. “I don’t think about Tang Shen that much either but technically she would have been my mother…”
He knew it wasn’t the same but he hoped it would help somehow.
Guilt prickled along the back of April's spine. Sometimes it was easy to forget that hers wasn't the only life in disarray. The boys were so resolute and had always been exactly as they were, in April's mind. She knew, logically, that they had as much to cope with as she did, if not as much loss. Sometimes she just.. lost the forest through the trees.
Against her better judgement, April pushed away her misgivings and leaned into Donatello's form. Her face came to rest in the valley between his neck and shoulder, and when he squeezed her hand, April squeezed back, struggling to say everything she couldn't put words to. I'm sorry, she was saying. I know and I'm sorry. I'm here. No matter what you say, no matter what you do, I'm here, and I'm sorry.
"We'll get through it together, I guess," were the only words she actually could summon up, and they were spoken in a heavy whisper against his skin. "One thing at a time, right Donnie?"
