“I was only doing my job, my lady.” Jamie giggled, pulling the chair she sat in. “This really isn’t necessary.” She insisted, even if she was enjoying having a meal in a restaurant even she couldn’t afford. “But I do appreciate your gratitude.” Dr. Calvin conceded.

“It’s my way of saying thank you for saving my life,” the young woman replied. “If it weren’t for you, my brother would be raising our little sister all alone right now. Taking you out to a meal isn’t that much in repayment. Lord knows I have the money to spare.” Grace’s parents had passed away the summer after she and her brother turned 18. They’d grown up rich, but also had had a sense of humility and a good work ethic instilled in them young. When their parents had died in the accident, the twins had immediately stepped up to raise their sister together, putting their own hopes and dreams on the back burner. Grace had managed to take online classes to get an accounting degree, but her brother was only just now getting to attend college. Now that Grace could support Alice on her own while he was away, he didn’t feel so bad leaving them for the school year.

“Actually, yes, I am. Do you do sports? You look great. And what made you decide to become a doctor?”

“Thank you.” Jamie grinned. “And yes, I’m an amateur bodybuilder. I could easily compete in pro, and probably wipe the floor with most of the competition, but I’m usually too busy being a doctor for that.” She explained. “I actually became a doctor after my mother died. I wanted to study music, but I just decided that the world needed more moms growing into sweet old ladies than musicians. So I put down my guitar, and picked up the surgical knife.”

Grace was thoroughly impressed at the bodybuilder thing. “That’s really cool! I’d love to see you in a competition sometime!” She smiled at the last part. “I’m sorry you had to give up your music to do so, but I’m awfully glad you did.”

“I still play in local bands, I could never completely give it up, but I’d rather just focus on helping people than be a professional musician.” She explained. “And as far as bodybuilding goes, you don’t need to see me compete, you can just see me in the gym. My personal best at this point is 650 lbs. The recorded world record is 500.” The giant noted, looking very proud.

“Really?” Grace asked in shock and awe. “How come you haven’t been recorded for a world record, yet? Also, I’d love to hear you play! I bet you’re amazing!”

They get a million calls a week.” She continued on. “Now that all said, I’m actually quite the shredder.” The amazon noted, briefly wiggling her fingers like she was fretting a guitar.

“I’ll have the salmon, please,” she said.

“It’s very quiet,” Grace said. “Nothing like the big city we came from.”

“I don’t think that’s a bad thing, though,” Trevor put in. “I kind of like the change. Though, it was really weird to hear wolves howling in the woods behind our house last night.”

“Are you sure it wasn’t just dogs?” asked Derek, “I mean, wolves haven’t been seen in California in like 100 years…” Obviously the twins didn’t live that far from the Hales. Close enough to hear the pack at night, anyway, which given human hearing, had to be pretty close.  He nodded. “Small towns are great. A little uneventful, but we don’t have much crime. Usually just the occasional hit and run or bar fight or wild animal attack. Mountain lions mostly.”

“Huh,” said Grace. “I mean, we live pretty out in the woods, so I kind of doubt dogs. Do you have coyotes here? I know we had them where we came from - even in the city. They were pretty quiet because of all the human activity, but I think I recall a friend who lived away from the city say they would sometimes howl. I suppose it could have been that?”

Trevor looked at Derek with alarm. “You have mountain lions?! How often do they attack people?”

Grace rolled her eyes at her brother. “Trevor, you’re being ridiculous. I’m sure they try to avoid people, right?”
