On October 19 I start my 13 Days of Halloween in which I dress up in costume every day for the two weeks leading up to Halloween. Itās a fun way to just sort of relax and be silly especially with midterms trying to bum everyone out. The night of the first day of Halloween, Iād dressed up as Fix it Felix, I was working on some orange and white felt ears to be attached to a headband so I could wear my red-orange sweater the next day and be a fox.
As Iām finishing up my ears, running a pair of scissors over them to give them a softer look, Squirrel called a roommate meeting. She looked a bit more nervous than usual, thanking us for being able to make it at least three times, though Bradypus and I had been sitting at the dining table already, she was talking to me while I worked on the ears. She said that we were clearly not happy living together and that she and Murinae had decided that the best thing to do was have Bradypus dropped from the lease and move out.
Bradypus flipped out, her face turned red, she got up so fast she almost knocked the chair over, and I could tell she was holding back several select swearwords. She was absolutely livid. Given that she had essentially just been kicked out of the apartment with absolutely no warning and half the apartment was ganging up on her, I think she handled the situation pretty well.
I asked if this was both their idea, because it seemed to me that it was more Ā Murinaeās idea. Squirrel stayed loyal to her friend and said that it had been both of them that came to this genius idea.
The whole time Murinae sat on the chair in an oversize hoodie, her knees drawn up to her chest while eating chips, and avoiding eye contact with everyone by looking up at the ceiling with big innocent eyes, almost as to say I didnāt do anything, I am simply here, none of this was my idea, Iām too sweet to make anyone this upset.
The only time she spoke was to tell Bradypus that she was over reacting, she said it in a stern way, the way an adult would scold a child for acting up at the mall. She claimed that Bradypus could easily find a new place and that she couldnāt understand where all this anger was coming from.
Squirrel explained that there were a few different options here:
2) Murinae moves out and Squirrel follows
3) I move out early but donāt get a new roommate (they said that this was because they didnāt want to deal with any new people but I think it was to make Bradypus pay more rent in the three way split and force her out that way)
I did not break eye contact with Murinae, she said I was making her uncomfortable, but I wanted her to feel unnerved. I wanted her to know that I saw past her act, that I knew she was not the sweet, mild mannered, petite and delicate girl she pretended to be. I knew there was malice in her, a specific type of malice, the kind that makes someone believe that they are the center of the universe. These people are used to having things go their way, these people expect others to bend over backwards for them, they have never worked a day in their lives for they have had everything handed to them. And when something or someone doesnāt follow their reality this type of person will make sure that everyone else becomes as miserable as they are.
