the golden sunlight settling over the freshly fallen snow, the warm rays peeking through the twisting branches of naked trees, it was like the world held its breath for a few moments before exhaling the stars into the night sky.

you returned from work to a fairly quiet household. not much of your usual setting was disrupted, aside from a few of spencerâs things lying around.
a few weeks ago, he had been shot in the knee, causing him to hang around at home a lot more than he typically would. partially because hotch told him off every time he spent even 5 minutes exerting more energy than he needed, and partially because he loved spending every second with you. even though it was something you were sure he wouldnât ever admit, his heart swelled every time you looked after him.
aside from a few misplaced items, spencer was nowhere to be found. a cause for concern, you decided to check the bedroom to see if he had hit the hay early that day, only to be met with an empty bed.
you jumped as a loud clatter of metal rang out in the bathroom behind you, âspencer? are you alright, sweetheart?â

placing both hands down, you rubbed in circles. drying his hair fairly quickly, you tossed the towel off to this side, landing in a crumpled bunch at the bottom of the laundry basket.

âhey, heâs not gonna go after you,â spencer stopped you from pulling at your scalp, âand youâll do great. you know more about this case than anyone else, youâve been reciting information about it to the precinct for weeks. you shouldnât worry about stumbling over a word, youâre an eloquent speaker. and if this does add another victim to our board, you know it wonât be your faultâ.
you lifted your head to look at spencer, your hands still in his. his big, brown eyes bore into yours. a painting of worry, and sickening sweetness, framed his face. care and kindness poured from his soul in a way that almost made you nauseous to think about.

spencer laughed, feigning disbelief, âi just gave you an uplifting speech!â
a door at the end of the hallway creaked open, hotch peaked his head out and called to you, âitâs time for you to goâ.

the next few days had been chock-full of planning. making arrangements with your bosses about needing a few days off, purchasing plane tickets, and booking a hotel room occupied most of your time. but you mainly wanted to keep an eye on spencer, making sure that he was still okay with this somewhat spontaneous trip, and prepare yourself to cancel everything if he changed his mind.
packing was a breeze, the flight was quicker than expected, and the hotel room was nice. overall, spencer seemed to be doing fairly well. aside from the usual stresses of traveling, he seemed to be slightly more stressed than normal, but that was expected.

he took a deep breath and walked in. he kept his head low, paying more attention to his shoes than the scene in front of him. a gym full of people, mostly in their early thirties, standing around talking, drinking, and fluttering about tables to reintroduce themselves to their former peers. the lights were dim, the dj seemed to be having a nice time, and nobody was without a smile.
spencer looked up, trying to keep himself stable. he continued breathing in and out, making sure his grasp was comfortable in your hand, and allowed himself to appreciate the vibrations of the booming music. if things continued like this, he could even picture himself having a decent time.
the two of you walked a lap around the tables, not quite ready to engage in conversation yet, but allowing spencer to become more comfortable. he poured the two of you a small glass of champagne to nurse while you chatted with each other. you smiled, proud of the man in front of you.

âit was just so dark, and so cold, and all those kids were just watching. they watched and they laughed. i couldnât- i couldnât even tell my mom about it-â spencerâs breath quicked.

he looked up, panic exploded behind his eyes like a menacing firework show. his hands shook, his lips quivered, he was lost inside his own mind.

spencerâs finger gently traced the skin of your thigh.
you both had had a somewhat exhausting day, and found yourselves seeking refuge on the couch. bodies entangled, hands glued to each other, one mouth searching for the other every once in a while. the living room was dark, the whole house was. the sun had set hours ago, but neither of you wanted to escape the comfort of your lover to turn a light on. so you stayed sewn together.
âwould you like to take this to the bath?â spencer asked quietly, his voice innocent and thoughtful.
you smiled, turning to place a soft kiss on his lips, âiâd love toâ.
his hand came up, lovingly placed against your cheek. the pad of his thumb rolled across your skin, back and forth again. his eyes were sweet, swirling around as if he were searching yours. a small, slightly timid smile came across his face, brought on by its own volition.
spencer carefully slid from your grasp, placing two sturdy feet on the ground. he reached out, grasping your wrists, pulling you up from the depths of the couch cushions.
in the bathroom, spencer kneeled down at the side of the tub, letting the hot water run. his fingers splashed beneath the stream, waiting for the temperature to be right. you stood back, unable to help yourself from watching in adoration. the way his brows came together in focus, his toes tucked beneath his feet to hold him up, his hand wrapped around the edge of the tub, it made your heart swell in an indescribable way.
your reflection slowly disappeared as a cloud of steam overtook the mirror. the small, tiled room was foggy, the air thick and sticky.
âitâs perfect,â spencer stated, standing and turning around, âwhat?â
âwhat?â you grinned.

you had arrived home from the grocery store earlier than anticipated. on your rare day off, you decided to catch up on some much-needed housework. restock the fridge, fix the sinkâs squeaky handle, and clean every square inch of the place.
an armful of bleach, lysol, and mr clean awaited you. as lame as it sounded, these were the kinds of days that you looked forward to. clean house, clean mind, you always said.
you unlocked the front door, teetering bags of groceries in hand. you nearly tripped over your boyfriendâs giant shoes in the doorway. you frowned, puzzled. spencer mustâve been home early as well.

you had your days when the stress of work was overwhelming. too much paperwork, too many emails, too many people needing assistance with something or another. today was one of those days where you were simply pushed too far, and your mind was swimming.
you jostled your apartment door open, greeted by your boyfriend, spencer, leaning over the sink, washing dishes.
âhello, how was your day?â he asked as you tossed your bag, coat, and shoes on the floor. spencer looked up, a playful kindness in his eyes.
your lower lip began to quiver, his face fell, âsweetheart, whatâs wrong?â

your legs stretched out in front of you as you mindlessly watched tv. a bag of decaffeinated tea leaves swam around your mug, you liked the taste, but didnât want a rush of energy. 8:23 pm the clock read. it was a quiet, mundane evening for you. you had gotten off work, had dinner, showered, and still had time to rest on the couch for a while.
you were waiting up for spencer. his team was working on a case out of the main office, which granted him the ability to go home at the end of the day. you had assumed spencer appreciated cases close to home, thinking of the comfortability and ease of it, but quickly learned it was quite the opposite.
spencer believed the farther away the case was, the better, because the farther away the criminal was from you. while you appreciated the thought, and believed it to be sweet that his cheeks flushed when he nervously explained himself, you didnât want him to worry.
the lock of the door suddenly jolted as you prepared yourself for the ball of anxiety that was about to walk through it.
âhey, hun,â you spoke gently as he shuffled into your apartment.
his head stayed down as his hands shook, shoving his keys into the satchel at his side, âhelloâ.
you tried to keep the uneasy frown off of your face as pushed his bag onto the table, his body practically rattling with stress from the day.

this wasnât totally unusual for spencer, while he was good at compartmentalizing all that he saw, he was still a sensitive person. there were many days that he had brought the stress of work home with him, and on those days, you knew that all he needed was love and time to decompress.
âone of those days?â you asked, pulling your hand up to the back of his head. you worked your fingers through his hair, massaging the tension out of his scalp, hoping to provide the slightest bit of relief.

âhold on,â you stopped him, âi know you can list every statistic in the world about victims of violent crimes, but i wonât let you worry about me becoming one. i know itâs difficult, but sometimes you have to trust that the people you love will be okayâ.
âitâs hard,â he whispered, lips pressed against your shoulder.

âspencer? itâs time to take your meds,â you nearly whispered, slowly opening the door to your bedroom.
a week ago, spencer had been shot at work, and taken a hard fall due to the impact. he sustained a somewhat significant head injury in the process, and was currently staying with you while he recovered. the room had to stay dark at all times, he had to take his medicine twice a day, and he had to avoid any loud sounds, bright lights, or sudden movement. doctorâs orders.
the team he worked with in the fbi had been worried about him. you were the first person they called when he was in the hospital, and you agreed to care for him without a second thought.
so now, here he was, occupying your bed for the past week, as you took time off from work to make sure he was doing well.
âokay,â he whispered, the sheets ruffled slightly.
you tip-toed over to the side of your bed, his face hidden beneath a mound of blankets. holding a glass in one hand and an orange bottle of pills in the other, you sat down next to him. his breathing was soft from the pile of bedding.
even though he was recovering well, the past week had still been difficult for him. not being able to use his brain in a conventional way was proving to be harder than anticipated. he was always tired, suffering from mind-splitting headaches, and struggling with not feeling like himself. on top of that, he had a gunshot wound on his side that was taking its sweet time healing. thinking about what spencer had been dealing with the past week tied your stomach in a knot. his wound had to be redressed daily, which you found to be a tricky task in the dark. but aside from bringing him medication, water, and the occasional bowl of soup, there was nothing you could do to help him.
quiet and gentle, that was what he needed. thatâs what he has always needed. and that is what you were for him. the past few days you had been handling him like a teacup, afraid that any movement could possibly shatter his fragile porcelain.
âhow are you feeling?â you asked, dumping two pills into the palm of your hand.
âiâm tired,â he unraveled himself from his cozy mountain.
âi know,â you handed him his medicine, preparing him to take a sip of water.
ânot my usual tired. iâm tired of lying in bed, iâm tired of everything being dark all day, and iâm tired of this headache,â he took a sip from the glass, âi want to feel betterâ.
he lay his head on the pillow, looking up at you. the slivers of moonlight peaking through your bedroom windows made him barely visible, but you reached out to touch his cheek.
âiâm sure you are, and iâm sure you do. iâve been on the phone with the doctor every day, and he said you have been making great progress. youâll return to being a functioning member of society before you know it. donât rush it, take your time to rest,â your thumb caressed the hollow beneath his cheekbone.
âiâm not sure how,â he whispers, ashamed.
ânot sure how to rest?â you could see the outline of his head shake no.
âitâs harder than people make it seem. may i?â you asked. he nodded.
you moved to the other side of the bed, pushing his blanket mound aside. you rested on your left, facing him. gently taking his shoulders, you leaned him towards you.
âthis is okay?â you paused.
âyes,â he assured softly.
you took his left arm, draping it over your side, and moved his right arm underneath you. he didnât have enough energy to feel tense about this in any way, he was putty beneath your hands as you repositioned him.
âif this hurts, please tell me,â you pulled him close, placing his head beneath your chin, âjust close your eyes and breatheâ.
he wrapped his arms around your back, sliding a leg between your knees. your fingers rubbed the valley that stretched below his shoulders, dancing up to softly run through his hair.
mere moments passed before you felt his body relax, his mind succumbing to a peaceful, painless sleep. you felt the gentle puff of his breath against your chest, smiling every time his figure rose and fell.
âthank you,â he groggily muttered, pulling himself closer.
âof course,â you kissed the top of his head as he returned to the land of dreams.
for the first time in nearly a week, spencer was actually getting good sleep. and for the first time in nearly a week, you were too.
