Tl;dr how you can personally make Neil Gaiman lose money (and not be a jerk to others.)

I see a lot of folks upset that NG will financially benefit from residuals and other compensation surrounding his involvement in the adaptation of Sandman and Good Omens (and he will.) But the answer isn’t “rage at the fans who are so emotionally attached to their blorbos because they grieve differently, and then somehow NG will be financially punished.” That’s lower-class/middle-class thinking. NG is too rich and financially diversified to really be hurt by little boycott or a couple of show cancellations (though said cancellations can cause life-changing poverty to the little guys who signed contracts and turned down other opportunities before all of this came out. Boy does NG love women in poverty 🤮)

So if you want to substantially reduce the wealth of someone at NG’s financial level—you need to do it with professional services fees.

The firm that NG has apparently engaged for online reputation management (ORM), called edendale, was once paid for their professional testimony in an unrelated slander lawsuit, which was delivered in the form of a report (2) outlining the strategy ORM firms use and (2) just how ludicrously expensive those professional services cost. (Credit to horrornobody77 for digging up the report.) We’re talking hundred of thousands of dollars for a small potatoes case, where NG’s could easily get into the millions for ORM and associated legal fees.

It’s not that long of a read, but to summarize the key action items you can take:

📆 -ORMs wait for the discourse to die down, because active discourse is much more expensive to counter. Wanna cost NG money? Talk about the accusations over time. Set a quarterly calendar event in your phone to remind yourself to post (and otherwise engage on other people’s posts) about the Vulture article. This needs to happens for years, so that NG has to pay for more comprehensive ORM and for longer.

✅-Make discourse that is Google-friendly. Use the words edendale will find concerning (they’re already running fluff pieces with the terms Neil Gaiman Uncovered to try and bury the similarly named subreddit.) If you just post a link without much comment, it’s not gonna be prioritized by search engines. Similarly, if you make a low effort post and then no one else engages with it—it’s not going to make it to the top ten search results. Engage with each other, for heaven’s sake!

🦾-Don’t let the fluff sit unaddressed. If you see random bot posts sharing NG quotes captioning random fantasy art (possibly AI or misattributed /stolen) with the comments turned on? Respond! Make it hard for the bots to understand your comment but easy for humans. “Nice quote! Mega bummer about what NG did, I used to really like him,” is hard for a bot to auto-delete. “Fuck NG,” is practically doing the bot’s autodelete command for it.

✍️ -If/when you post fan works for properties strongly related to Neil Gaiman, leave a lil callout in the author’s notes. Nothing that will get you sued, just a few words like: “I would definitely personally choose to not ever meet Neil Gaiman at a comic con.” Maybe throw in a link to your fav tumblr summary.

Anyway, to the person being paid hundreds or thousands of dollars per hour by Neil Gaiman for professional services—you’re welcome for the extra billable hours 😘

Also Edendale sounds like a law firm in a Good Omens legal AU fic, and I can’t believe it’s real.

Whenever I dislike something very much, I change my mind often within a few days. It's been a week, it hurts less, but I didn’t change my mind this time. I don't accept the final. It doesn't feel right to me, and it doesn't feel fair. I wrote a very angry text earlier and it was rather emotional, not gonna delete it though, it made me feel better. I don't care if the s3 ending was intended to be so bitter or did they genuinely thought it's right and good, I just know that it doesn’t match the whole picture to me (and also, it's just not what I wanted, not gonna lie, but there are so many ways to end the story, and they chose THE WORST). I'd like to say it one more time: the problem for me is not the characters make the choice they did, it's the writers put them in this situation in the first place. And EVEN in those circumstances, i believe that our angel and demon would come to any other solution than this one. When I was drawing this, I was thinking about what makes our beloved characters themselves. It is their shared past and experiences, thousands of memories that influence their personalities and choices. It's their long story, their history. It's not just a "soul", though it matters too if it exists. So, when it was erased this easily, no reincarnations could fill the hole that many of us got. Asa and Anthony are sweet and I kinda liked them after all but their happiness doesn't really bother me as much as Aziraphale and Crowley's. Besides, I was so so sad about not only they were destroyed, but all of the people and the world we knew. It felt so wrong, especially when you think about Adam giving the Earth a chance despite it being so twisted and bad in many ways. Because, firstly it's up to no one to decide the fate of everyone, and secondly, it is wrong to give up on trying to fix things and make it better. It's so important to remember our past, our pain and our mistakes so that we don’t repeat them in the future, and when it's just gone it feels like a loss, not a win. I'm not even talking about all the good things that humanity had, and now it's all went different way. We have seen that people live just fine, and in the new world everything is very similar to ours, but this feels so... not related to us? Idk, it feels like something else. I wonder what humanity had to go through during this time, but as I said earlier, I wanted to get a chance to live on for our world, and not for someone else, who didn't even exist yet... Don't we deserve this? That's why I've drawn this picture. I usually draw something for fun or just to create something pleasing to my own eyes, but this one feel special because of so much thoughts behind it. Pretty simple thoughts but anyway. In my head Aziraphale and Crowley are alive as old selves, happy and loved. In the cottage, of course.

The last thing I would like to add is just my opinion (as everything above, sure) but I want to say it anyway. I believe that every author should tell the story the way they want, without necessarily listening to anyone's suggestions about it. But for me this story was a comforting one, the one about and for all of the people, and now it’s neither. After the S2 I felt like this show is going to end somehow lovely, with everyone achieve the peace they deserved, and that the ending would be the most cliché (in a good way) we could imagine. Because this is what we NEEDED. We needed something that ends fair and everyone is happy, that would be a beacon to help us through the hard times in reality. There are not so many stories nowadays that seems like a fairy tale that gives us hope, like the S1. I think we all have the right to grieve about something that was so important to us and turned out to be a kind of betrayal, despite the fact that it was the author's choice. They had that right, and we have the right to say what we think about it. Also, people who paid to watch it have a right to complain about the commercial product they dislike because it is obviously rushed and not really written very well hahaha but that’s not what I’m talking about. Even if this ending would be written brilliant with a full six episodes, it would be easier to accept but I probably wouldn’t.

I'm not the talkative one when it comes to openly expressing my opinions, it's always been a hard thing to me, but this is what happens when you make an introvert feel the pain about something they love deeply lol. I know a lot of people have already said exactly what I just said but I needed to vent it too. I feel so much easier after putting all of this into words and sharing. Glad if you read it! I’m open to discussion if you have anything to add or disagree.

also, I really don't know how to phrase this but to me the finale misses the joke, you know?

it forgets that the christian cosmology was the setting, told through corporate satire, not the villain. even God wasn’t an active tyrant; she was an absent CEO, leaving individual contributors like Aziraphale and Crowley to realize their job descriptions were irrelevant to the company's bottom line anyway, so they coasted by on minimum effort

that corporate satire was what allowed this to be a comedy, a space to tell a beautiful story about choices, humanity, and love. the finale for some reason treats that background seriously, it turns that setting into an omnipotent, dystopian threat, which completely suffocates both the romance and the humor by replacing a petty system you can outwit, outsmart, outmanouver with a bleak, unearned nightmare where "the company controls your every breath, and you can never clock out"

you know what fucking kills me? all major historical events that happened in our universe (the supposed new universe) also happened in the original universe.

we know that covid happened because the lockdowns were the reason Maggie was behind on rent (+ the whole lockdown audio bit, if you want to treat that as canon). the French Revolution, WW2, the Spanish Inquisition, climate change all happened. Shakespeare, Queen, the Velvet Underground, Shostakovich and David Bowie happened. hell, even on a much smaller-stakes scale, our version of the M25 still looks like Crowley's version.

the universe still worked out the same exact way. what was the point of their sacrifice then? no more cosmic meddling? we've ended up with the same exact thing anyway, so either Heaven and Hell were never that important because it's all humanity's doing (oh hello Book Omens/S1) , or the universe is just so inert that the whole "once you get rid of God you gain free will" thing is just blatantly Not True

"but humanity is now free to exist without the influences from Heaven or Hell!!!" yeah and everything still worked out the same way so ultimately Heaven and Hell never had much of a hand in anything

"but humanity being in control is very Pratchett!!!" yes, but killing the whole universe just to prove that point isn't. the death of 8 billion people was just a device to prove that humanity is capable of both beauty and horror? "sin, young man, is when you treat people like things."

afaik the point is that this humanity doesn't die after 6000 years, it will live, as long as it can. GO!humanity can't.

SO WHY DON'T YOU ASK IT FOR OLD HUMANS?

All they needed is just reset of the old universe and rescheduling of Armageddon to hear death or whatever it could be.

Or bring everyone back but nerf the angels & demons so they can't cause mass destruction. Or any of a zillion other endings, many of which are already on ao3.

But "treating people like things" hits to the core of the matter, I think. All the beloved characters, even the forgettable background masses, they were all downgraded to play*things* of God and genocided out of existence. And then God took them back out of the box (minus all memories) and made a new universe with almost the same setting, but now they play out contrived human lives where all the characters we know show up in the same bar at the same time.

I've only gotten more disdainful of the writing over time.

This is exactly what I wanted to see in the finale. The film was completely devoid of any emotion. They deserved at least an embrace. A desperate, long-awaited one, full of love, the desire to protect, and to love forever… Perhaps with tears, but tears of relief, as well as the longing from a long separation...
