Early Life
tw: for parental death, child abandonment, pregnancy complications.
Born out a wedlock to a traveling Spanish/Romani woman and the second son of a well-known Lord in the kingdom of Corona, Bastion's life seemed to be doomed from the start. Although many had warned his mother, Lola, that mixing with aristocrats would only lead her to ruin, she believe the young Alessandro's promises of a new life ---- not because she hated the life she was currently living but because she loved him and he, seemingly loved her.
However, when tragedy struck and the eldest son of the current Lord De Santis died in a hunting accident, the sudden change of hierarchy within the family pushed Alessandro to the forefront. He became the the next in line to inherit the estate, circumventing the middle child, a daughter by the name Amara. His escapades with Lola came to light, and he was given the choice between choosing a life filled with struggle or upholding the family title. Alessandro chose the latter.
Alessandro married his deceased brother's betrothed not long after, not giving Lola the courtesy to even end their relationship officially. She was made aware like many others of Corona did, watching the fanfare from the side of the road, on hand rubbing at her growing belly.
The pregnancy was hard on Lola and she never quite recovered from either it or the betrayal. However, for the next five years Bastion and her were inseparable and she loved him fiercely. Knowing her time was dwindling she did her best to teach him properly, to be good. To be kind. To be generous. He was willful and spontaneously adventurous, but most importantly, he was the mirror image of his father even at his young age.
An attempt was made once, just before her passing, to meet with his father and see if Bastion could be taken in before her passing. While Lola couldn't fully trust Alessandro now, she knew Bastion would have a better life if she could convince Alessandro to acknowledge Bastion as his son than if he were to live in the world as a young orphan.
