Hear me out. hear me out. So. When the Sons of Feanor arrive in Beleriand, there is already a battle on. It's hard fought until the Noldor show up with a lot of issues to take out on the forces of Angband and the Dagor-nuin-Giliath quickly goes against Angband.
Orcs HAD been beseiging the Havens at Falas, but pull back to reinforce the northern forces of Angband agains the Noldor. Or attempt to, anyway. They run into a problem in the form of Celegorm son of Feanor and his forces, who ambush the reinforcements near Ethel Sirion and drive them into the Fen of Serach. Being stuck in a swamp with a hunter of Orome hunting YOU is not a good situation, and it shows; Celegorm destroys that force of orcs to a one. No orcs or servants of the enemy survived him.
It is canon that Celegorm knew all the tounges of birds and beasts, at least those in Valinor. This no doubt aids him greatly in hunting the forces of Angband; in the fens the very toads and frogs could give him intel.
HOWEVER. I posit that it is quite probable that the toads and frogs of Beleriand speak a rather different dialect than those in Valinor, much as the elves of Valinor speak Quenya and those in the East Sindarin and Silvan and other tounges.
In an unfortunate linguistic slip, Celegorm accidentally flirts with the various amphibians of the Fen of Serach. They're smitten, and aid the large strange but fair new wife (frogs have a very VERY loose concept of elf gender) but then of course Celegorm LEAVES once the hunt is finished. The toads and frogs are bereft. They croak sadly about their lost love, and sing the Toadolante for generations to come, which is a HELL of a shock for Finrod in a few hundred years when he ends up in the Fens fighting during the Bragollach.

Hello and thank you for another pretty much perfect book! I have a kind of fussy question: I know the three Ancillary books are, officially, the Imperial Radch series. Is there an overarching series name that covers those three as well as the rest that fall within the same universe but not (necessarily) within Radch space? I know everyone seems to lump them under IR, and I've taken to considering the whole thing "the Imperial Radch Extended Universe," but I imagine that would make Anaander Mianaai altogether too pleased, like if the King of England found out some aliens called the entire Milky Way the Great British Empire Extended Galaxy.

I mean, as someone who as worked in a zoo, this is fairly true.
Obvious disclaimer that you shouldn't have wild animals as pets.
But like, cheetahs are the only large cats that keepers will do free contact with. Hell, even most small cats don't get free contact. (Because small cats can be VICIOUS. They'll have a baby pallas cat wearing thicker gloves than when handling an owl. Because small cats can just be vicious.)
Like I think the only other cat at our zoo where I've seen free contact with was servals? Because I know they've used servals in shows to demonstrate their natural jumping ability. But I know servals can sometimes have a mean temper as well. Meanwhile they'll do the cheetah run and afterwards put the mic by the cheetahs and it's just like an engine with them purring. It's fascinating to watch when the message in every other large animal is "no free contact because it's dangerous even when they're born in captivity".
Legit if any wild animal could be adapted to a pet it would be cheetahs lmao. Only problem is they can be skittish and very anxious and that's why they're often raised around dogs in zoos to gain confidence.

Fun fact about me is that I'm stupid.
When I was a child (maybe six years old?) I asked my parents what thoughts were, and they told me "they're the pictures in your head". I agreed like this explained things, but unknown to all of us, I have aphantasia, and since I never had pictures in my head I secretly concluded that I was incapable of thought. The way people talked about thinking made it sound really important, so I went for literal years carefully guarding this secret and when people told me to think about what I was doing etc. I'd stay quiet and pretend I was capable of thinking. I didn't want anyone to find out I couldn't think.
When I was about eight, my mother's horse ate sand and got colic and she was up all night with him. The next day, I was told that he went to live on a nice farm.
I was in my thirties before I thought back to the situation and realised that Zamada had died.
I was literally too stupid to punish as a child. I have a lot of very clear memories of being sent to sit in a corner or told to stay in a class at recess and my opinion of the situation was 'I guess this is my role in whatever the current school activity is'. It wasn't until I was in high school that I realised that I'd spent so much time in reception and year 1 in time out or detention. Did not even register that that was happening at the time.
I used to have a very strong fear of snakes and when I was a little kid I was, for some reason, under the impression that the snakes had some kind of secret conspiracy where they wanted to kill me. We had frequent power outages (I'm unsure if it was the area's infrastructure or if my parents just couldn't keep up with the electricity bills) and every time the power went out at night I'd jump up on a chair or table or something and refuse to come down until I had light, because I believed that snakes had bitten through the power cables and were swarming across the floor in the dark ready to bite me while I couldn't see them.
I thought that Jesus was just a guy who obtained magical powers by being born on Christmas Day and decided to use his powers to help people. Like a superhero. I didn't know anything about superheroes at the time so when I later learned about Superman and Batman and stuff I was like "oh, like Jesus Christ!"
My great grandmother was also born on Christmas day and I could never understand why she either didn't have magic powers, or did but kept lying to me about it.

I hope you like math because Baby Derin would spend all of their time asking hypothetical questions about it and intuiting the relationship between multiplication and division and power relationships, which was frustrating for everyone involved because we hadn't learned the words for any of those things in school yet so I would take forever explaining something like 4^4 as a series of additions. Addition and subtraction were the only things we'd learned how to do, so describing a multiplication table (which I was inventing on the fly) to my mother, who was just trying to get the laundry done, was a long, long ordeal of serial addition and she would have no idea what I was trying to say.

Ah, reminded of that time my brother catfished an entire guild of men who wanted to date him...he nailed the girl acting so well that people were straight up looking for him to propose.
Okay so in order for me to explain what he did, I have to explain the game.
Where Winds Meet has Co-op enabled all the time. Even if you disable Co-op, once you hit a certain level, people will inevitably wander in your game. So, for a mobile phone player, its kind of difficult because once people get in your game, your phone starts overheating.
So he disabled co-op effects, he can't see anyone else in his game so he can just ignore everybody and play normally.
Next, you can play as a girl or a boy. For boys, this is mostly annoying, because you're constantly challenged into fights by bounty hunters, or chased around by guilds in order to get you to join their guild.
If you play as a girl, the girls are more respectful and the only problem you'd get would be boys giving you marriage proposals (there's in-game marriage). Girls leave girls alone. My brother and I share a Genshin account and what we both like is exploration. Leave us alone in a game and we just like to wander around. He brought this mindset with him in the game and it kind of shows in his playstyle.
Next, playstyle. This is the one game I don't share with him so as he explains it, he likes to paralyze people and then poke them. Once the paralysis of one attack wears off, he has like six more to hit you with that causes paralysis again. And then you get poked to death while paralyzed. This looks supremely awkward and funny when you watch it because a cute girl is literally stabbing to death a person who can't fight back.
Lastly, there's guilds. I have no idea the name of the guild, but they literally need to get married and divorced once a day and social extroverted people like it. He got invited because they saw a strong cute girl stabbing a guy to death and they liked him. He got at least fifty marriage proposals on that day.
Along with the marriage proposals, he got a ton of offers for free stuff. Naturally, as a morally good person, he refused the free stuff. As a Chaotically Good Person, he also told them he was a sixteen year old girl when they asked. He is a thirty five year old man. He pretended to be a shy sixteen year old girl so well that people believed him!!! (apparently, he just pretended to be me at sixteen!!!!!)
This guy literally seduced a whole guild of men into liking him so much that when the game updated and his phone couldn't handle the recent update anymore, he said to them, "Ah, my parents found out I'm playing and took my phone, this is the last time I'm logging in."
Someone literally asked, "do you have a bank account, I'll send you enough money to buy an iPhone right now."
At this point, I stopped talking to him because I was so embarrassed but that's how my brother got into a situation so awkward that he can't log into Where Winds Meet anymore, even if he got a better phone. There is literally a manhunt for him.
"Why don't the people of Gotham just move?"
Because it's a massive East Coast city but the property values are probably like $200 a month for a three bedroom apartment, and most Gothamites are like, "Hey, Bane never swore to break my back."
And here's the thing: you're not just moving out of Gotham City. You're moving into the rest of the DC universe. And it has hero-based power scaling.
Oh, Metropolis looks fucking great. But it gets invaded by aliens and robots and demigods, because Superman is there.
Wonder Woman's tangling with gods.
You go to Central City, and some Reverse-Flash motherfucker runs backwards from an alternate future and kicks your balls off at the speed of light.
You could move to the West Coast, and oh, an entire city just gets exploded by Cyborg Superman or some shit.
How about you move to Indianapolis, or Cleveland? Haha, no. They have no protector during the alien invasions, and you're in Cleveland
So stay in Gotham. Sure, you have lunatics, but you know that if you had a gun, you at least have a chance against the Joker or Riddler. Mongo of War-World would crush you. But Gotham just has creeps, and you know you have a chance. Even Bane, R'as Al-Ghul, Killer Croc, and Mr. Freeze are just slightly altered dudes. Oh no, Poison Ivy is going to kiss me to death! Who gives a shit, you kinda wanted to go out that way anyway.

This does beg the question of why Gotham has such a horrible in-universe reputation when all its villains are relatively human compared to the cosmic bullshit that most other heroes put up with.
I think it's all about perception. Gotham City has crime. But when Ares sends his undying legions to march upon the mortal realm and Wonder Woman has to punch all of them, people don't internalize that as "crime." That's "a crisis" or "a religious event" or at best, terrorism. Same thing when Superman has to stop Brainiac from shrinking Metropolis or whatever. That stuff is objectively more dangerous but it's on such a huge scale that "crime" is not the word for it. The cops don't involve themselves in this at any point. But the stuff Batman deals with is like, robberies, assaults, gang wars, serial killings. All his villains commit actual crimes, so they go into police reports, which end up as statistics. So when someone compiles all this data, oh look, Gotham City has the highest crime rate in the country, yet again. Forget the fact that 10% of Keystone City's population had their skulls crushed by invading superintelligent gorillas. Who cares that a random guy in Opal City accidentally teleported the entire state to Hell after he found out the hard way that he was born a wizard. Those are not crimes. There's nothing in the police recordkeeping app's drop-down menu for a Gorilla invasion. Closest thing we've got is Random Chimp Event.
So my theory is that while Gotham does have a lot of crime, what it does not have is space catastrophes. And so it ends up being the most dangerous city based on a bureaucratic technicality.
all this is very true, I just wanted to point out that the worst thing about metropolis isn't the alien invasions, killer robots or meta human fights breaking buildings, it's the power hungry scheming ego maniac billionaire who gets enough of a pass from the population, despite the several journalistic exposes about him, that he's been able to run for president and win
at least gotham's billionaire is funny in the tabloids and, even if he's rather ditzy, he seems to be helpful to legit causes, against all odds
