Erich Mendelsohn, Friedrich Steinberg Hat Factory, (1921-1923)

In 1921, the two biggest hat-making ateliers in Germany merged (Herrman and Steinberg). It was decided a large new factory in Luckenwalde would be built on Industrial Road. The contract was awarded to the then relatively unknown architect Erich Mendelsohn, who was friends with Gustav Herrmann. On an area of 10,000 square meters, four production halls, a boiler, turbine house, a dyeing hall and two gatehouses were designed and built. The genius of Mendelsohn was particularly evident in the construction of the dyeing hall, shaped with a modern, shaft-like hood allowing ventilation. The dyeing hall funneled the toxic fumes out its chute, it was considered a breakthrough design. The tower also resembled a hat, eventually becoming a trademark of Luckenwalde. The factory and its construction were considered cutting-edge, using new and modern materials - steel, concrete, glass and wood. On the industrial estate were two parallel production courses for both hair and wool hats to be made. The dyeing and power station were two strands of the work and were therefore in a symmetrical axis to the system.

Alvaro Siza, Casa Avelino Duarte, (1981-1985)

Situated on a long rectangular plot of land, the house is divided up into three floors along the lines of Loos’s Raumolan. The reference to Loos is also apparent in the way that symmetries are affirmed and then at once denied and in the relative poverty of the envelope and the richness of the materials used to line the interior. A characteristic feature of the construction is the “excavation” of the main façade which has established itself as one of the themes of composition most dear to Siza.

Alvaro Siza, Water Tower for the University of Aviero, (1988-1989)

 Set on the University of Aveiro campus, the Water Tower accomplishes its practical function while projecting an engaging minimalist fragility. The reinforced concrete tank stands on a supporting panel next to a hollow cylinder that also serves as a support as well as a container for tubing and stairs. The construction rises over a reflecting sheet of water. Exquisitely balancing the striking verticality of the structure with the horizontality of the landscape, the asymmetry of the Water Tower allows viewers to experience its form in a different way depending on the angle from which the tower is observed.
