Re-Thinking Nature with Selgascano’s Innovative Hydroponic System
For the Spain Pavilion at the 2012 Architecture Bienniale in Venice, selgascano worked with biologist Josep Selga and agronomist Juan Laureano to create the living installation “Al Aire” (“Between Air”). The project explored a renewed vision of nature and its relationship to technology by rethinking the traditional method of growing plants. Rather than a shift in the product itself, the experiment exemplified a fundamental shift in our mentality towards this relationship. The installation consisted of a system of suspended and connected airpots: porous cylindrical forms made from recycled plastics. The holes bring light to the root system, which eventually reach the open air and dry out, encouraging them to grow radially rather than lineally. The system eliminates the need for soil maintenance and increases vegetative yield with minimal costs. Along with their design for the prestigious Serpentine Pavilion, which is on display until October 18th, selgascano are participating in the inaugural Chicago Architecture Biennial this October in collaboration with helloeverything.
Molly Evans is a fiber artist based in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. In her latest project ‘Lionel Stitchie’ she spread the street art gospel according to Lionel Richie’s songs. Every Sunday she hit the pavement at 5 am armed with miles of braided ‘Easy Cheese’ yellow yarn, a tag gun and a camera, and stitched his timeworn lyrics onto dozens of discarded couches, recliners, and mattresses in her neighborhood. They were suggestions of stories that might have been onto furniture that was never hers, but which she wanted to give a voice with her art.
‘These bulky discards were the remains of university graduates moving on to new chapters, of families starting over with fresh styles, and of people letting go of emotional attachments to tired possessions. I identified with this process of reestablishment and sought to call attention to this important narrative in progress all around the city,’ Molly expounds.
