Sound map of natural conditions of the United States by the National Park Service, estimating how places would sound naturally, without human influence.Ā
The trend is higher sound levels in wetter areas with more vegetation. This is due to the sounds of wind blowing through vegetation, flowing water, and more animals (especially birds and frogs) vocalizing in more fertile locations.
You can look at higher res maps here and also see the sound map of existing condtions.

LOST LANDSCAPE Luiz Eduardo LupatiniĀ | Carrara Thermal Baths Competition Location: Carrara, Italy | Learn More: freundevonfreunden.com
Extraction sustains our society, and even in recent decades we have been advancing technologically, we have not progressed enough that slowing down the pace would be possible. We rarely stop to think about the origin of the materials which makes up the built environment, or the raw materials necessary to the endless demands of contemporary human activity. And so, as the world population has become increasingly more and more urban, the landscapes that provide these raw materials become more remote and spatially distant from the daily view, and since literally these landscapes disappear, we can think of them as lost landscapes.
Modos Furniture System (2014) by Matt Tyson and Andrew Personette on Kickstarter
Modos is a tool free furniture system that uses connectors and boards to make anything you want. We created Modos because there are a lot of things wrong with traditional furniture. First of all, assembling furniture is a hassle. Many friendships have been lost over assembling flat-pack furniture. Not only that, but the end product usually ends up being disappointing. Most flat-pack furniture is extremely low quality and isnāt meant to last. In addition, out of the box furniture is limited to one thing, or costs an exorbitant amount if you want to go custom. We thought there was a better option. Thatās why we invented Modos.
AIR: GothamĀ Vincent Laforet
āAerials are surprisingly intimate, they make the world feel smaller.ā ~Ā Vincent Laforet
AIR is a project born of my need to share an important lesson Iāve discovered over the past decade making aerial photographs: the world is much smaller than we think. Borders are irrelevant and distances shortened. Clearly, we are more intimately connected to one another than we may realize. AIR is a once a lifetime experience for our team and Iād like to pay that passion and excitement forward with as many of you as possible. I chose the title AIR because itās something we all share and are all equally responsible for. By definition AIR doesnāt belong to anyone. It belongs to us all regardless of background, social status and origin, as does this project.Ā

Benches in parks, train stations, bus shelters and other public places are meant to offer seating, but only for a limited duration. Many elements of such seats are subtly or overtly restrictive. Arm rests, for instance, indeed provide spaces to rest arms, but they also prevent people from lying down or sitting in anything but a prescribed position. This
