“Yeah. The one named after the CIA.” Okay, so she knows logically that it’s just his last name, but that was the association she’d made years ago. Hence, that’s the association that stayed. “I don’t know. He was a conspiracy theorist. He might’ve hit on something. Thing is, they went deep. That wasn’t just looking up his name, or we wouldn’t have got the alert.” 

Sometimes the alerts make sense. The files are out there for a reason, after all. People are meant to use them. 

But there are things in there that are definitely never meant to be seen. Digitizing those files, Alice learned that some things aren’t meant to resurface.

“don’t call me darling.” it’s said with the same inflection she’d tell him the weather with, and she doesn’t look up from the file she’s scanning. hallucinogenic fungal growth. she does, however, hold out her hand. “thank you. i’m probably hungry.” she’s been too into the files, barely processing her own body’s needs. “you know the two of them once got stuck underground hallucinating? it sounds like the seventies.”
