Preserving heritage in suburban developments
History has been part of the cultural identity of the community, and it will always be part of sentimental value for the people. As we progress and embrace modernity, people tends to acknowledge the future improvements of the cities and urban areas, we became more aware that time tends to deteriorate history and historical structures.
Preserving heritage in suburban development is a movement in which we mend structural reforms and conserve cultural aspects of the community to maintain their identity, according to Ar. John Fulgar, he explained there are ways to preserve historical structures in community that tend to progress from modernity as time goes on. I find it fascinating how he gave examples to each city that experience preserving heritage and the uniqueness of preserving structures to suburban plans. What I have noticed from his article is that heritage structures tend to provide characteristics to the community bringing people recognition and sentiment to their own land that holds their ancestor's memories. Preserving heritage structures not only preserves the tangible buildings but also keep the culture of the community itself such as the case in the Pampanga and how they combat the cultural homogenization, how they preserve the culture of the food and maintaining the authenticity of the taste of the food as a generational knowledge to people. Preserving means adapting to modernization such as making the historical structure more viable to climate changes, in such way these historical buildings has a climate-responsive mechanism that copes to various climatic influxes or community influxes, this can be seen to Ilo-ilo city. It also brings a sense of community in which in connects people to their ancestors such as sharing identity of civilization thus improving the legacy by inducing a sense of pride, rootedness, and ownership, positively benefiting their well-being and health, such as the case in Baguio City. I wanted to share how preserving structure doesnât mean that it copes with sentimental value but rather knowing the identity of the community and acknowledging people on where they come from and how far they come from. In conclusion, preserving heritage in suburban development have some challenges that there are ways as a community to understand and contribute to historical value and acknowledge the identity of the community. Because in some cases these historical structures hold various characteristics that became valuable to communities that create their own culture and cultivate their livelihood of the people. Preserving these structures tends to hold and connect people to their ancestor's pieces of their past lives and take to account of nourishing their beliefs as well as their architectural style that made the community unique in their own ways.
