𝐂𝐇𝐑𝐈𝐒𝐓𝐈𝐍𝐄   𝐅𝐄𝐋𝐓   𝐋𝐎𝐒𝐓   among  so  many  unknown  faces.    the  ballet  rats  were  in  the  corner,    gossiping  and  exchanging  looks  with  the  patróns,   and  she  wasn’t  inclined  to  joining  them  ;   sorelli  was  the  one  that  got  most   of  the  attention,   and  usually,   a  petty  discussion  could  stirr  from  her  proud  comments.     indeed,  walking  around  the  hall was  most  desired,  and  quite  fun,  actually.     the  decoration  was  enchanting  to  look  at,   GOLD   &&   RED    from  the  courtains  ;  paradise  on  earth.    the  orchesta  played  soothing  music  -  and  some  pairs  dared  to  glide  through  the  floor  with  their    ROMANTIC   FIGURES.    at  that  moment,   miss  daaé  felt  like a  child  again.    wishing  to  fly  in  illusion,   skirt  twirling,  smile  bright  -   head  full   of  dreams.

the  gentleman  by  her side,   when  finally  body  decided  to  stop  by  a  long  wall  of  frowns,   was  well   known   -   the  english  name  slipped  out  of  tongue  with  simplicity  even  though  the  soprano  knew  nothing  about  who  he  was.   not  his  first  name,   neither  where  he  came  from,  or  why  was  he  here.    𝐈𝐓  𝐃𝐈𝐃  𝐍𝐎𝐓  𝐌𝐀𝐓𝐓𝐄𝐑,   𝐓𝐇𝐎𝐔𝐆𝐇.     innocence  was  open  to  conversation,  always,   just  like  it  had  been  long  ago  when  feet  ached  from  travelling  the  roads.     that      (  FORTUNATELY )  never  changed.

❝        oh,  truly?       ❞       her  question  hadn’t  been  an  invitation.    but,  his  lack of  interest  made her… confused,  a bit  hurt,  even.   was  she  unwanted?  if  so,  leaving  wouldn’t  be   too  bad.     except  christine  could  see  how  stiff his  muscles  were  underneath  those  rich  fabrics,   and  images  of   dearest  raoul  came  to  mind.     oh,  lotte,  believe us.    balls  are  never  easy  for  any  rich  man.              ❝        do  you  not   KNOW  HOW,   monsieur?   if  so,  rest  easy,  for  i  don’t,   either.      i’m   a  terrible   dancer  myself.             ❞      her  voice   carried   a  tone  of  emphaty  that  eluded  to  a  kind  heart.     the  volume  was  low,  as  if  telling  a  secret.   christine  smiled  at  the  gentleman,  almost  teasingly.   

𝚆𝙷𝙴𝚁𝙴  𝙾𝚃𝙷𝙴𝚁𝚂  𝙼𝙸𝙶𝙷𝚃  𝙷𝙰𝚅𝙴  𝙵𝙾𝚄𝙽𝙳  𝙳𝙴𝙻𝙸𝙶𝙷𝚃  𝙾𝚁  𝙴𝙽𝙲𝙷𝙰𝙽𝚃𝙼𝙴𝙽𝚃,  darcy  merely  saw  what  was  to  be  avoided.  the  first  was  dancing.  the  second,  in  accordance  with  the  first,  was  speaking  with  those  he  did  not  know,  &&  how  frequently  they  wished  to  talk  of  what  he  could  not  find  enjoyment  in.  decorations  that  draped  &&  sparkled,  dresses  of  fabrics  that  spun  like  clouds  during  a  dance,  &&  new  acquaintances  to  whom  they  were  introduced  -----  none  of  these  subjects  ever  held  appeal,  nor  did  they  ease  the  difficulty  which  plagued  him  when  conversing  with  strangers.  he  preferred  to  disregard  the  false  pleasantries  altogether,  &&  disinterest  was  solely  attributed  to  such,   not  to  the  young  woman  herself,  as  he  would  have  regarded  any  other  attendee  in  equivalent  manner.  her  assumption,  however,  that  his  lack  of  enthusiasm  derived  from  an  inability  to  dance,  wounded  𝐩𝐫𝐢𝐝𝐞  ever  so  slightly,  that  she  believed  dancing  so  pleasant  that  the  reason  for  one  not  partaking  could  only  come  from  possessing  two  left  feet.     ❝ i  believe  you  mistake  my  unwillingness  for  ignorance. ❞     his  gaze  departed  from  her  for  a  moment,  returning  as  he  spoke  again,  voice  nearly  caught  in  his  throat,  saturnine  syllables :      ❝ do  you  often  attend  balls  &&  circumvent  dancing ?  ❞     perhaps  some  𝐜𝐚𝐦𝐚𝐫𝐚𝐝𝐞𝐫𝐢𝐞  was  to  be  found  within  her  answer.

❛  i am sorry to hear that, sir. ❜        apologetic, yet thoroughly unsurprised.   she has never seen a man look so unimpressed in pleasant company before.   perhaps it is the habit of these english gentlemen to be dour when surrounded by merriment  —  but country balls in this land are not so different from her own, and frenchmen seem able to enjoy themselves so much more.    without any better occupation, evelyn sets herself to this one.   if she can ease some of the awkwardness from the man’s frame, she might claim one small victory tonight.    she smooths down her flowing gown, taking up the mantle of conversation where he has dropped it.        ❛ have you any inclination to dance, or take up with acquaintances?  the hall has been decorated so nicely, and with so much care…   if nothing else, the marzipan plates being passed around are worth the trouble of coming. ❜

𝚂𝚃𝙾𝙸𝙲  𝙴𝚇𝙿𝚁𝙴𝚂𝚂𝙸𝙾𝙽  𝚆𝙸𝚃𝙷𝙷𝙾𝙻𝙳𝚂  only  half  of  what  he  wishes  to  mask,  discomfort  wound  inescapably  through  each  extremity,  &&  he  cannot  help  but  fix  gaze  upon  her  again,  almost  as  though  to  ascertain  her  motive  for  speaking  with  him,  a  brief  flash  of  almost  curiosity  within  his  face  -----  a  fraction  of  a  second  which  he  does  not  possess  the  ability  to  hide.     (  what  can  be  her  motive,  if  not  to  dance ?  if  he  were  another  man,  perhaps  he  would  find  within  himself  the  desire  to  ask.  )     ❝ i’m  afraid  my  𝐬𝐨𝐥𝐞  acquaintance  has  found  more  pleasure  in  dancing. ❞     momentarily,  hues  lifting  across  the  ballroom  in  the  direction  of  said  acquaintance  before  returning  to  her,  resuming  reply :   ❝ though  i  believe  presently  i  am  forming  another  -----  if  i  am  not  mistaken. ❞

ruined by apathy.  you  can’t bring  yourself   to  care.  you  hate  that  you  can’t  feel   what   you  used  to  be   able  to  feel.   you   hate  that  you  can’t  be  happy.  you  hate  that   you  can’t  bring  yourself  to  actually   hate.  your   apathy  has  swallowed  you  and  immersed   you  in  a  well  of  nothingness.  you  can’t  feel  what  you   can’t  forget.  you  can’t   see   what  you   close  your   eyes  to.  you  choose   to  feel   nothing,  and  you  have  lost   everything  because   of  it.

𝙷𝙴𝚁  𝙰𝚂𝚂𝙴𝚂𝚂𝙼𝙴𝙽𝚃  was  far  from  correct,  as  the  ballroom  was  not  near  as  handsome  as  others  -----  in  fact,  it  was  certainly  one  of  the  most  plain  in  the  country,  but  he  supposed  she  must  have  been  flattering  for  the  sake  of  social  formalities:  something  that  he  always  found  rather  dull,  that  people  will  remark  on  any  &&  everything  simply  for  the  sake  of  saying  something.  his  defense  of  ceasing  conversations  reared  its  head,  driven  by  the  growing  𝐮𝐧𝐞𝐚𝐬𝐞  at  the  apparent  obligation  to  converse  with  her,  for  he  lacked  the  proficiency  others  seemed  to  possess  in  the  face  of  such  situations.    ❝ on  the  contrary,  miss,  i  have  not  the  pleasure  of  finding  it  so  charming  as  you  do. ❞
