Complainers with No Merit

Alexus is a huge complainer, maybe moreso big with playing the victim card in any possible situation. Everyone has the advantage over her or in a better position or getting all of the good relationships blah blah blah. When in reality, everyone works hard for what they “have” and proven themselves time and time again. 

Her on the other hand has been on the team for 10 years and is still a junior analyst (has taken the seniors currently on the team roughly 2-5 years to get from junior to senior) with no sense of blame as to who is responsible for this (aka her). So she sits there and complains/compares everyones’ efforts versus her own and it’s all chaulked up to them getting the opportunity or advantage that otherwise never would have happened for her.

This is the reality of it all: Alexus comes in late and leaves early, still taking an hour lunch so her day is like 6 hours vs. everyone else’s 8. Then she skips out even earlier when the bosses are out of the office (we’re in real estate and all travel a lot so bosses out of the office happens often). Thus, it is all a factor of her lack of work rate or putting in the time the rest of us all have and continue to do so when needed. But will that stop her from complaining? Hell no. 

Victim, victim, victim. 

Cunt, cunt, cunt.

The Young One One With Too Much to Prove

Mr. Smith is at it again and this time in front of our vendors. Vendors came into town this week for trainings for the team that deeply needed it (it’s amazing when the 40 something male says “it should be just like using Google” but can’t even work drop down selection fields in the system). Regardless, the vendor is an attractive female and thus draws the attention of Mr. Smith, wanting to take any possible opportunity to shine in front of her. After the training sessions we all went for drinks and dinner and this is Mr. Smith’s specialty as he’s in on all types of scenes, drinks, craft beers, food, restaurants, what’s hot, what’s not (including knowing full out details of “The Bachlor”) and puts on the usual display of a person who fits this bill. 

So as we get through dinner, he’s talking her up on everything he thinks he knows about including a descriptive display through his resume and why he’s so great at such a young age. And of course, when a person has this style/attitude/outlook on life, he’s blind to it all for how it’s all coming out. 

Lesson is people; people who want to find out how good you are will find out and in their own way. Saying isn’t showing, and when you’ve talked about yourself for 5 mins straight when it wasn’t prompted (and not on a first date) only makes your case that much worse. Careers aren’t just about the work you put in, but also the demeanor you illustrate to everyone.

This is the type of properties I go to; this is a self made trap door of the property manager in his office onsite at an apartment complex in Baldwin Hills area of LA. He “installed” this door so he could drop down on to his car (parked underneath the office in a garage) and quickly leave the complex where he wouldn’t have to run into any of the tenants. That’s how bad this tenant base was, to the point where the manager came to the site early enough in the morning before tenants woke up, stayed there, then left through the trap door to avoid them all.

Did Anyone Else Just Hear That Question from the Woman Whose Been on the Team for 10 Years?!

Our form of investments has a certain tax benefit to them to put it vaguely, one to not be too specific since my industry is small and two I don’t want to explain how it all works to you. Therefore, our asset class on the floor is very different from the others (bonds, equities, loans, etc) and this is something you should know being on the floor and within my team for a few years, let alone 10. 

Our investment can be classified as a deferred tax asset when not being used on the balance sheet of the investing entity. No other asset class would ever touch this in the investment shop right? Basic knowledge of investments is that what is traded/held doesn’t sit on the DTA line item of a balance sheet. 

Alexus interjects herself into the discussion during a team meeting about how this may effect our future investments asking, “Are any of the other groups going through the same situation?” ...... Did anyone else hear that?!?! 

When will it be clear to the team that this lady has yet to comprehend anything about investments in the 10 years she’s been on the team?!!  Wake the fuck up people!

Inter-Office Competition is Bad for Business

Ever since I’ve noticably taken over more business relationships and been excelling in my new-ish role on the team, Alexus has taken it all up to it’s now all down to competition. Competition can be a fickle thing, especially in the corp office setting. Can be a good thing if all parties are aware and all for it, may the best man win attitude and all that. Creates extra energy in the office and inspires certain types of personalities. Or, it can take another route and cause some serious issues amongst team members. 

 After becoming a real estate analyst, Alexus has been viewing it all now as competition; who gets what business relationship, who fucks up what report/presentation/view from the rest of the team. She’s tried a few times to bring out the big guns and put me on front street, just to have it all blow up (hilariously) back in her face and in front of team members. This probably all leads more into why she hates me, but is that really my fault? No. She’s just not intelligent enough to fully think through everything before she pulls out her guns and draws the crowd together. I can share some of those blow out stories in another post. 

And this is the bad part of competition in the office. Some people take it as all personal and need to attack at any front they can fight on. Swinging at anything and everything is never a good fighting strategy, and the good ones know this. If you’re going to fight in the office you must do it intelligently and not obviously, unless you want the other team members to know your intentions and most likely not take your side. Alexus goes the immature route as well in talking shit to others and see if anything sticks on the other side. If she gets any opened ears she continues with those individuals (insert middled ages woman) and it becomes something to bond over and a topic over lunches (so I guess, you’re welcome ladies....?). 

In reality, there is no compeition. No, Im not that cocky. The Bossman made communicated to both Alexus and I that there isn’t just 1 spot for promtion between us, but whoever does the work, put in the effort, blah blah blah. So in my mind, game over. Let’s be at least respectful and friendly in the office and do our work and we can both get there. Nope. Game on.

But that’s her problem. She’s now spending a lot of time attempting to put my on front street and talking shit behind my back instead of putting in the time and effort into the work. Clearly, this is all to my benefit. But I am splitting over it a bit as it’s all come to my attention what she is doing/trying to do and it makes me mad and want to get back at her. But as I just said, in doing that I am gonig down her road and fucking up my own game. However, I’m half into this corp America shit for the game amongst people. So I need to take the emotion out of what I want to do and start strategizing the proper way. With that; do I setup my own traps or let her walk into her own traps over and over again....?  Decisions decisions....

Infighting Can Make a Team More Interesting

I joined the team coming up on 3 years ago and was trained by Alexus (yes, that's how I'm spelling it and for good reason), who had been on the team for 7 years in various roles of sorts. Things between her and I started off well as her trainings were good and she supported my ability to improve processes as I went on, but then I got to her level of understanding, which didn't take long, and that's where things went south... It came to the point where Alexus could no longer teach me anything; for one, she couldn't as in ability/comprehension, another bc we started batting out of her average and to my surprise she took notice. I told The Bossman that I could no longer learn from her (she would heavily struggle thru everything which never goes well for the person whose suppose to take it over from there) and he started to step into training me. After that I took a new position on the team that put me as equals to Alexus. Game was on from that point on as far as she was concerned. No longer teammates, it was a clear animosity in the air when it came to the two of us. In my mind, however, there was no competition going on as The Bossman clearly stated there isn't just one promotion b/w her and I, meaning if we each showed we could go to the next level we both could. Competition over right? No such luck. Fast forward a year later and everything still the same, concept Alexus has shown her stupidity and no comprehension of what our team is really suppose to do, all while drafting the backfill of my old position on the team (midddle aged nightmare of a women in Corp America in the sense of everything needing to be dotted and i-ed for her in order for her to do any actual work) to her ranks of hatred towards me (yes, I understand this blog won't help). Bottom line, neither qualify for the standards of such a team as investing the company dollars along with some 3rd party funds and I'm pretty sure that they know that's my impression of them. Bringing up stupidity of Alexus, she once spelled "hired" as higher as in a new manager was hired in a report. Minor mind fart most would say, I pointed it out nicely to her (along with The Bossman on the email as reference to where we were in the process). She actually commented in the email, "as for the hired vs. Higher, I'm going to leave it as is" aka she's right.... OMFG! Let me spell out the F in that, FUCK. This is the level I'm dealing with. She should have never made it on the team. Overall, war is on with Alexus and I (I write this, but it's not much of a fight or effort on my end) and there will be much more to come on this front...

Mr. Smith Joins the Team

This was a recent occurrence, so not turning back the clock as much as I could and most likely will soon enough but here is a good example of the Young Buck not knowing what he’s bucking. 

Young guy joins the team, calling him Mr. Smith for not the obvious reasons as you’d think but one that makes sense in real life. Mr. Smith comes from a highly acclaimed rotation program that only takes the brightest young blah blah blah. Basically, they all turn into entitled fucks when they came out of the program and into a permanent position. Above that, the kid has some historical connection to the team with a close relative formally on it, so Mr. Smith knows the players and what he’s getting into. Though all that insight can make a person think they know a lot and this can be costly. 

A few weeks on the team and he’s coming out to lunch with The Bossman and myself (my boss, not Mr. Smith’s), not something that every team member gets invited to but b/c of who Mr. Smith’s relative was to The Bossman he gets a seat at the table from day 1. This continues to be a weekly occurrence and as it goes on I’m starting to catch on to how Mr. Smith operates when it comes to Playing People. 1-on-1 Mr. Smith is a great coworker and hard worker, smart (which is surprisingly a rarity on a team that manages real estate investments), and actually attempts to go over and beyond what is expected of him in the office. Helps, right? Well, get this guy in front of The Bossman and he becomes your not so favorite coworker. 

Usually classified as a rookie mistake (or if you have the stomach for it and dont care what your coworkers think of you and actually think it makes a fucking difference), Brown nosing, or trying to grab ahold of the Big Swinging Dicks (BSD) of the office is an offense that doesn’t bode well for a young new team member. Mr. Smith does well at not making it obvious what he is doing so at this point The Bossman isn’t aware of how much this guy is grabbing. Covert in nature, Mr. Smith applies the classic (but foolish) drumming of insults in the way and along side of The Bossman to anyone else but the BSD himself as a form of bonding Mr. Smith to The Bossman. While at the same time, the young fuck can’t handle any insults thrown back at him (esp in front of BSDs) and folds under. This form of Brown Nosing doesn’t go over well with me as I have to deal with the shitty insults and him crying back to The Bossman when he catches fire in return. If anything, it should be myself and The Bossman ruining this young kid’s life with insults over beers and laughs bc he’s earned it, hes the new guy, right of passage, hazing, blah blah blah. 

Overall and bc of the initial circumstances mentioned above, Mr. Smith is putting myself above some other team members to which he holds no class to, experience, or knowledge and this will come back to hurt if it continues.

And let’s be clear before we end, I am not the old guy getting run up the flag pole. Far from it. I am a young professional who is looking to take Mr. Smith under his wing and throw him some strong opportunities to shine in front of the team and help him create something for himself. And this is what I want to happen. But if he continues to bite the hand that feeds him those opportunities...

Introduction

The basis of this page is to illustrate the goings on of a corp american real estate asset management team and the conflicts/power moves, and games that are played all while doing our actual job (for some of us, and you’ll see what I mean). We will document these moves as they happen and the down stream impacts these had on people and careers. Overall, this game is easily compared to a game of Chess, which you will see me make this reference time and time again b/c, well it’s obviously there. So let’s begin….
