Yorgos Lanthimos is a remarkable director. He takes obscure, dark themes and somehow makes them not only accessible but entertaining. Dogtooth and Alps brilliantly demonstrate his deft ability at exploring the complexity what it is to be human. The Lobster looks no different and I can not wait to see what it holds. The posters too are quite possibly my favourite of the year.Ā
Continuum is a magnificent piece by artist Sofia Mattioli scored byĀ Jamie xx, Four Tet, Koreless and John Talabot. I often go back and get lost in this. And it feels like perfect prep for the Soundscapes exhibition at the National Gallery -Ā http://www.nationalgallery.org.uk/whats-on/soundscapesĀ
In 1995, photographer-turned-director Larry Clark and a bunch of novice actors made Kids. On its 20th anniversary, writer Harmony Korine and actor Leo Fitzpatrick remember the film dubbed a āwake-up call to the modern worldā
I can't quite get over the fact that āKidsā in now 20 years old. It seems more relevant today than ever. It had a massive impact on me, not just the content, and context but the manner in which it was written and made showed that anything can really be achieved. That visceral content which is for some too close to the bone is someoneās truth, perhaps not our own, but it should not be censored.
Later Clarkās āBullyā (staring the late Brad Renfro) similarly presented a bleak, harsh reality of disparate youth, further amplified by that fact it was based on a true story. Korineās filmography since; Gummo, Julian Donkey Boy and the heartbreaking Mister Lonely, show a man who looks at things differently, often poetically, and with a gritty aesthetic that adds a necessary further discomfort.
Both often come under fire for the content they make, often it is said they are exploitive of their cast. These are not crass 70ā²s exploitation filmmakers, they just have had different experiences and exposures to the masses, they reflect a real existence, maybe its just not yours or mine.
Saddened to hear about the death of the brilliant Mary Ellen Mark today. Ellen Mark had not only an amazing eye but also established an incredible trust with her subjects, in particular Tiny, who she photographed over many years. She was one of the first photographers I fell in love with during my formative years as a student of Photography. Her work captures such raw human honesty that I can not help but be altered by. Her body of work is a document of an America that one wishes could be in the past, but the darkness and hardships she documented are more prevalent than ever. RIP.Ā
Visions Festival is happening in my hood of Hackney in June. Not only does the line up (Son Lux, be still my beating heart) and venue selection look pretty top notch, but the supporting announcement video is rather spiffing too. As a life long Nick Cave fan and also as someone who enjoys a bit of genre hopping Iām slightly in love with this Dr Seuss-esk version of Red Right Hand by Dr Fraustus Au.Ā
Iāve very, very curious to see the result of theĀ ānew digital R&D experimentā from Absolut and the amazing Punchdrunk theatre company. The tease is very nice, indeed drawing you in while leaving you unsure of what is to come. Iām a big fan of Punchdrunk and with a brand like Absolut which encourage fantastic artistic endeavours I think Silverpoint will be something very special.Ā
It is excites me greatly that this exhibition is now on my doorstep (relative to Dublin). As a previous student of photography who's practice leans towards experimental photographic techniques this is the type of exhibition I have been dying to see. Bringing together Fox Talbot, Muybridge et al I am glad to see such an exhibition being held by the Science Museum. Iāll never stop learning.Ā

First & final frames by @jacobtswinney. Watching these bookends had rather an unexpected effect on me. A beautiful, simple idea that transported me back to how I felt when I first watched those movies. My mind filling in the hours in-between and reminding me of the incredible journey cinema brings you on. I am always transformed after watching a film. It sounds a bit wanky I know but some have such an earth-shattering effect on me than when the lights go down and I enter that world I am forever changed. It is a privilege I hope I will long experience and enjoy.Ā
Amazing video from the BFI and Kevin B Lee documenting the career progression of Paul Thomas Anderson through his use of the steadicam. When you consider the importance the visual language of not just a film but of a scene has in driving forward both the storytelling narrative and character development it really is something that deserves such a study.Ā

Very excited to start reading Miranda July's debut novel. Her collection of short stories 'No one belongs here more than you' is second only to Brautigan's 'Revenge of the Lawn'. She is a vulnerable, honest and charming writer. She throws in peculiar sentences as if a giving in at times to a stream of consciousness that add wonderful colour to her stories. The fact my friend got her to sign a copy for me (Moloko being my nickname from said friend) means it is an extra special copy.

Siaās video for Elastic Heart still moves me. The glorious choreography by Ryan Heffington (http://cargocollective.com/heffington) is married beautifully to the music. This is something you can watch for hours.Ā
Philip-Lorca diCorcia's 'Terminal 3' film for Dior is true to his sense of voyeurism and his continued draw to LA, to the anguish and darkness that lies beneath the the surface. He is one of my very favourite photographers and seeing his transition into film and fashion is one that I am excited to see.Ā
Great to hear my LowLow Adland Gal ad being talked about in such a positive light on The Business show on our national broadcaster RTE last Friday. It was brought up during a discussion on how brands can too often play on insecurities in both men and women and how the Adland Gal campaign played against this with its parody of these ads. (Section starts 23 mins in with Adland Gal featuring 29 mins in).
