The Creek’s Tiny Wonders
In the rolling hills of rural Tennessee, where the air smelled of pine and fresh-turned earth, lived a man named Harlan. At six-foot-four with a sun-weathered face and calloused hands from years of farm work, Harlan was a proud country soul. But this summer, he carried something extraordinary: a heavy, round belly that swayed with every step. His own pregnancy, a miracle he still marveled at daily, made him waddle more than walk these days. His overalls stretched tight over the curve, and he often rested a gentle hand on his belly as he moved.
One warm afternoon, with the sun filtering through the leaves like golden threads, Harlan felt the familiar itch of curiosity. “Reckon the creek’s callin’ today,” he muttered to himself, grabbing an old metal bucket and a fine mesh net from the shed. His swollen feet ached in his boots, but the gentle kicks from within urged him onward. He waddled down the worn dirt path behind his weathered farmhouse, the weight of his belly shifting side to side with each careful step.
The creek bubbled peacefully under the old oak trees, its clear water dancing over smooth stones. Harlan knelt at the edge—more like a slow, deliberate lowering—and dipped his net into the shallows. He scooped up a handful of aquatic treasures: a few shiny minnows, a couple of crayfish waving their tiny claws, some water striders skimming the surface, and a plump tadpole or two. He chuckled as he transferred them to the bucket half-filled with creek water.
Then something caught his eye—a shimmering flash of color beneath a submerged log. He leaned in closer, his pregnant belly pressing against his thighs, and swept the net through a gentle current. Up came a whole school of tiny guppy mermen, no bigger than his thumb, their colorful tails flicking like living jewels.
Their upper bodies were delicately human-like, with wide curious eyes and miniature arms. Many of the little males sported flowing fins, but it was the carriers that made Harlan’s heart swell—nearly half of them were heavily pregnant, their small bellies rounded and glowing with the promise of new life. They darted gracefully in the net, protective hands over their middles, yet somehow peaceful.
“Well, I’ll be,” Harlan whispered, his voice thick with wonder. “Look at y’all… carryin’ the future just like me.”
He carefully transferred the entire school into his bucket, making sure the water stayed cool and oxygenated.
The guppy mermen swam in curious circles, their tiny pregnant forms a mirror to his own. Harlan waddled back up the path, bucket swinging gently in one hand while the other supported his lower back. The walk home felt lighter somehow, shared with these unexpected companions.
Back at the farmhouse, Harlan set up a large glass tank on the wooden table by the window. He added smooth pebbles from the creek, a few water plants, and a gentle air stone that bubbled softly. The guppy mermen explored their new home with delight, weaving between the greenery. Harlan sat in his old rocking chair, his own heavy belly resting on his lap, and watched them for hours.
Over the following days, he tended to them with loving care—fresh creek water changes, tiny bits of brine shrimp for food, and soft lighting as the sun moved across the sky. One magical evening, the first of the pregnant guppy mermen gave birth. Tiny, perfect babies no larger than rice grains emerged, wriggling into the world with vibrant tails. Harlan’s eyes misted over as he witnessed the beautiful miracle of life unfolding in miniature. His own hand rested on his belly, feeling the strong kicks within, connecting him to the cycle in the tank.
“Life sure is a precious thing,” he said softly to the tank, smiling as more births followed in the peaceful days ahead. In his quiet country home, Harlan had found not just new pets, but a daily reminder of wonder, resilience, and the shared journey of bringing new souls into the world. The creek had given him a gift, and he would cherish it always.
