Having just finished my first year of my screenwriting masters program, i wanna share this thing that I was told at the very start of the year that I have not been able to stop thinking about

they got all 28 of us screenwriters in a room on like the second day and straight up told us—

“you will suffer for your entire career if you make this into a competition.” 

they told us that, while we might like the write similar things, like in the same genre, or same settings—we’d never be in competition, simply because we were all different people.

from our big differences in life experience and in personality, down to our smaller differences in story preferences and writing style, it all made everything we all did unique.

and while we were all one of a million people trying to achieve the same goal of making writing a career—individually we were the only ones who could tell our stories. 

You are the only one who can write like you, who can draw like you, who can cosplay like you, who can sing like you, who can make art like you. Don’t ruin the love you have for your craft by comparing yourself to others, by putting yourself in competition with them just because you want to be “the best”.

And finally, here’s the tough love part that we all got reminded of constantly—

The moment you decide you are better than everyone, is the moment you fail. Because you will have closed yourself off to valuable critique. You will have inflated your ego so big that the second you get rejected you’ll spiral. You will have become so high and mighty that one day you’ll look around and realize you have pushed all of your peers, and your entire support system, away. 

There literally is no “best”. There is only growing with others as artists, supporting your peers, and telling your story in the way only you can. That’s how you succeed.

Life is unfair. You put someone first who puts you second. You study your ass off for a final only to get a C. You give 110% to someone in a relationship who only gives 40%. You’re there for a best friend at 3:00am and the next day they don’t pick up their phone. It seems like you’re giving everyone everything and they’re just walking away with it.

World Building Questions

This is from an article by Sharon Caseburg which can be found here.

Is the New World predominantly like the one we currently live in? Is it different? How is it different?

What is the environment like on your New World? Is the air quality good? Is the air polluted? Is there an Ozone layer? Do civilizations live in protected environments? How are these environments constructed? How are these environments controlled?

Is there water on your world?

How does the sun rise? How does it set? In fact, is there a sun?

What are the life-sustaining factors of your world?

What is the nature of your society? For example, is it predominantly agrarian or is it technological? Is it modeled after a real civilization that once lived on this earth? If it is, research everything you can about that civilization. It will help you decide what is similar and what is different. If the world is technological, to what degree?

Is your world contemporary, futuristic or alternatively historical? If it is futuristic, is it far-futuristic or near-futuristic.

What year does your story take place in?

What calendar does your civilization observe? In fact does it even observe a calendar?

What seasons exist in the realm?

What is the plant life like in your realm? In fact is there any plant life?

What is the style of clothing worn?

What currencies are used?

What mode of transportation is used? If you are inventing one, how does it function? Is it petrol powered? Solar powered? Powered by another source? Describe the source in detail.

Does the military exist in your world? How is the military structured?

What is the hierarchy in the elected officials of the realm? Are there elected officials in the realm? Is it a monarchy? A democracy? Do elders exist in the community? What role do they play? Is there a hierarchy that is adhered to with these individuals?

If you are inventing new races of life forms, be prepared to make detailed notes about their societies as well.

How do people communicate with each other? Is communication verbal?

Are there computers on the world? Are they the same as here?

Do people read and write?

Does telepathy exist?

What is the same in the New World as in this world?

What is different?

How do people celebrate?

How do people grieve?

How are the young in society treated?

How are the elderly in society treated?

What is the average life span of your characters?

What is the diet on your New World?

And anything and everything else you can think of about your New World.

#also this is it: this is the proof that we are Hannibal’s dinner guests #a banquet of human flesh cooked into even the wine itself #fed to unsuspecting fools prone to watching the melodrama of perfectly-trained voices and melodramatic performance #Hannibal’s existence is an opera #one sad impossible story after another #crafted into violence and tragedy - retold again and again in high fashion #he life is narrated by Mozart’s Requiem and it seems hilarious and overwrought but it never seems truly ridiculous #they could narrate with Faust - give him the devil’s lines - and it would not seem ridiculous #because Hannibal as a character is an uncomfortable European import who doesn’t quite fit into our society #but who people like to think that they have cultivated and befriended and understood #and shelved as an achievement #(see: Franklin’s behavior) #and because Hannibal as a story is all vainglorious performance and emotional manipulation and luxurious retellings and meta-jokes#and blood that arcs high and true and red #Hannibal is an opera #and we are the audience who devours his works #at a long square table #sitting across from people we will not ever truly know #We are the audience and we are the meat #We are the consumers and we are the art (neverfeedthesarcophagi)
