Last night I changed my facebook picture to this screenshot of Pete Campbell reading The Crying of Lot 49. I did this right before I went to bed and woke up to find that 2 men I know apparently used this as an opportunity to have a loooong discussion of the nature of Don Draper, suggesting that Don was “socially progressive” (whatttt???) and ultimately suggesting that they meet up to discuss this further over beer. Neither of them asked me about what I think bout how Don treats women (I’m literally a woman) or discussed inviting me, on my own facebook page, to their alcohol-fuelled meet up, which will also be beneficial to the younger guy’s career because the older guy is a successful guy in the media. This is literally the plot of the Mad Men! Nothing has changed! It’s soooo funny and annoying.

One of those things that I had forgotten about myself is that the reason I started reading Proust when I was 21 is because I liked Little Miss Sunshine so much. One of the main things I liked about that film was the way two of the characters within were so devoted to the books they liked, and ok I have still only done a little surface-level Nietzsche, like when I read an Introduction to Nietzsche in the library right next door to Westfield shopping centre in Shepherd’s Bush.

Anyway I thought I would finish En Recherche du Temps Perdu by the time I was thirty but now I’m 29 and have not finished Volume 3:The Guermantes Way so it’s really crunch time.

I might also suggest that 27 is when you make peace with forgetting parts of your life and 29 is when you start to experience the pleasure from rediscovering them.

My birthday was two days ago. I got John Berger’s Ways of Seeing + black Puma slides + a yoga mat, which is a pretty perfect gift list for a leo. I also got to eat amazing food with amazing people. Including persuading my dad to eat a vegan meal which he enjoyed! Wer-hey!

maybe I’m just a fool for only realising this in 2017 but I recently tried something similar and using a smartphone to make a kind of film diary is amazing for practicing seeing. My project was flabbier and I’m not sure how I’ll finish it, to be honest, but I used to think of filmmaking as something that’s difficult to practice. And actually, in this day and age, maybe it isn’t.
