About the young Elijah Baley and his fight for the freedom of the earthlings by knowing more about the space people.
Weeks ago I did a kind of essay on the first part of the book “Caves of Steel”, as I was very struck by the context at the beginning of the book and about the perspective of Elijah Baley and how he in his younger years had been part of a movement to “safeguard” the rights of the earthlings before the space people who bent them in very questionable ways, to the point of opening due to negotiations, but, in the end in this universe raised and as in real life there will always be problems by the areas of power and totalitarian authority.
The space enclave ( I was not satisfied with the most current translation and in my oldest book in Spanish it basically said "Espaciopolis" and it is definitely much better) was basically a territory within the planet earth but with laws of another world, there in that book only says that it was of the space people do not specify which world in particular but there they arrived and some people from earth migrated from time to time, as a small state of the space people on earth.
The governments of planet earth wanted to do it as a tourist attraction to encourage to know a little more of the space people, but I feel that they did not do it well considering that the governments of planet earth did not reach a first treaty or agreements, so that both were in agreement.
And they immediately branded the space people that they were too “cruel” to deprive tourism by putting a very firm barrier and at the beginning doing it in a violent way, disappearing ships, frightening people with sleeping pills and other chemicals to make them leave. And it is understood by the old rivalries that were appeased since in the past there were very strong wars between these two entities.
The "Terricolans" ( According to the translator, he did it like this, I must also investigate well as they say in the books in the language) therefore made many protests, I liked very much that in these protests there were chants that included “Man was also born on planet earth, listen all of you”, “Return to your space”, “Dirty space”. And this last one more recurrent since they were asking for many health control exams since I came back to this important point, space people contrary to humans if they were clean, free of viruses of “uncontrollable earthlings” and this comes back in the aftermath.
And what made me laugh the most was to remember that there was Elijah, a young rebel shouting, doing everything he could so that the space people would be more open to the planet where they themselves were born, because there were earthlings who ventured to colonize outer space worlds and from there they were born.
Later they gradually accepted the earthlings but with their migration rules and very strict health controls since the space people were not exposed to human diseases since they considered themselves a superior race to the earthlings. A hit there since by their nature of “being better than earthlings” was very noticeable and somewhat passive aggressive.
Until the space people removed the barrier and the security controls were much friendlier due to social pressure and being a little less rigid, but only in that small enclave, and in their worlds like Aurora and Solaria, which are the only ones mentioned in this saga, it was very different.
Now let's take this to our daily lives, once upon a time maybe we did, I include myself. I think it is a natural response to something that sometimes is imposed on us, we want to be heard and valued in something that does not seem to us according to our way of life. But when it really should be, not when we don't have the context or we are not well informed.
But Baley at 42 years old is already assigned to a mission to solve a murder to a space that his boss asked him as a favor because he was one of the few people who had great confidence in him and promised him a rank that would give him a better life for him and his family. But he up to that moment was carrying that resentment to the space people and a strange dislike up to that moment with robots, because it was very noticeable that he didn't like R. Sammy very much and he thought that all robots were like that, cold and only made to obey orders limited to their laws .Besides, he was very worried about the situation that probably could have triggered a civil war or something worse than what he got to live in his youth.
But, as the story goes, Baley's perspective began to change and not to be so hermetic thanks to Daneel and Fastolfe, who helped him to expand more and remove those prejudices so marked in that society that was hurt, but did not want to evolve and lead to a better space society.
So far I leave this reflection of this particular part of the story, I hope to do many more, as I am documenting a lot to try to write a story about an alternate universe and be as close to the canon of the books, I hope to write about Daneel and Elijah expanding their friendship and unconditional love. But also about Elijah and Gladia, which is something I never expected, but their story was definitely something that moved me.
As I mentioned in another post, my native language is Spanish. But I am using tools, I hope I can make myself understood.
