red being the ultra super secret postgame boss in gen 2 is such a mew under the truck ass schoolyard hoax to me i always found it so funny that it’s actually real. if i was a kid and someone at school told me the protagonist of the first game was actually the secret last boss of the second game but you had to get twice as many gym badges as usual and climb a mountain to get to him and he has a level 88 pikachu i would not believe them

#especially since if you’re me as a kid you probably maxed out around 7 gym badges so you’re never ever getting far enough to see it #pokemon stuff

testament to how i would just Never beat the elite four in pokemon games as a kid because i always sucked at them just enough is that i didn’t even know the johto games had an entire kanto badge circuit postgame until i replayed it in 2021

i think unconsciously as an autistic person what i loved about playing pokemon games growing up is that every pokemon game is literally exactly the same. you may be thinking “well whats the point in even buying them then that seems like a rip off” but to me an autistic sweet spot is when they’re like juuuust different enough (different characters, settings, sometimes new pokemon) but all the story beats and gameplay mechanics stay exactly the same. as with any good rpg

#like yesss i love getting eight badges and fighting evil team and at some point probably teaming up with the champion of the league who #doesn’t tell you who they are so you can fight evil team together for a couple minutes and then you fight evil team with your #secondary rival who’s also usually your ally and then you periodically get challenges from your actual rival and etc etc etc #just rehashing shit every single game i loved it sorry #it’s like campy how predictable it is #pokemon stuff

#i mean i’ve been passively replaying and replaying the games for years since i replayed them all for the first time in 2021 but #usually it’s just been to pass time during college lectures on my laptop on an emulator lol so i wasn’t really giving it attention #since i have literally nothing to do now the love for it is coming back a little

also re: my last post i always hated that starting with the 3d pokemon games and because they began adding so much character customization they kind of did away with the “character you didn’t pick becomes secondary rival” thing like idk that’s sad to me. lost a little sauce

i like when pokemon games have you pick your boy/girl protagonist and the one you didn’t pick becomes a reoccurring npc/secondary rival because i always decide which is the “real” main character in my head and it’s almost always the girl

like i think ethan being the daycare owners’ grandson and not really battling and being a pokemon breeder fits him better as a personality even though he was the Only protagonist in johto in og gold/silver because i also just like the idea of lyra being league champion better too. in a similar vein my headcanon for the hoenn protags was always that may is still professor birch’s kid and brendon is norman’s kid who’s new to town but may is still the champion protagonist. if that makes sense. idk maybe i just believe in #girlpower too much women can do anything

#pokemon boy protags have always been secondary to me i like them better in supporting roles SORRY #like it makes more sense to me that lucas would be a research assistant than dawn because dawn is badass and awesome do you get me #pokemon stuff #i literally cannot come up with a single gba/ds era pokemon protag that would be better as the boy counterpart im crying #besides red but i feel like it’s because he’s too iconic as the first protag ever lol #i think the bw/bw2 protags could go either way for me tho idk why i think i just never projected onto them as much #i do also think there’s something to be said about how the girl protags are always more iconic because they’re also #always the ones to show up in a supporting role in the anime whenever ash got to xyz region
