I always thought the oxygen mask on the plane was to quickly kill you before you crash on the plane & die so you don’t feel the pain from the plane crash. My grandma informed me that, that was incorrect 😭

Also planes don’t actually carry oxygen because it’s too heavy and takes up too much space. They do however carry oxygen generators that has a mix of chemicals that when combined, give off oxygen gas as a byproduct. They also only flow for like 10-15 minutes. It’s supposed to buy the passengers time until the pilot can get the plane to an altitude that’s safe for us to breathe on our own.

It’s also to calm you down, as oxygen in higher quantities gets you high and making you calm and in case you actually crash you are more likely to survive
