There exists a very short list of people born with no place to call home, and when Ariel took her first breath of sea air, wailing into the salty tinged air of the night, her relationship with the sea would always be cemented. Her parents private boat was a hell of a place to start your life, and it was Ariel’s, no matter how odd. Jason and Whitney, her parents, were from old money, stocks in Disney World kind of money, private club memberships, their name has pull in the mayors office money, and that was the life they brought Ariel back to when they made dock. They loved her and each other, they truly did, but they both had strong personality that occasionally resulted in fights between them. They were always solved, but it gave Ariel a bit of a furrowed brow when she looked at them.
She hated conflict. Always did from a young age, when she’d bring birds nests in the house so that they didn’t get eaten, and how she’d feed a growing number of stray dogs behind the kitchen of the guest house. Little Ari wanted desperately to fix their problems, but she didn’t know how - her solution, gifted to her by one of her governesses, was to bake. Small hands dutifully followed the step by step instructions to make her first batch of chocolate chip cookies (with help), and when she presented them to her parents they laughed, swept her up, planted a kiss on her cheek. So began a love affair that the girl would eventually turn into a career.
School was hard for Ariel, not because of the subjects but because of the people. She was too eager to make friends, to willing to overlook peoples red flags and flaws, and was trampled on time and again. In middle school the teasing started, so she begged her parents to transfer her to another private school where no one would know her. It was there that Ariel met her best friend, a rough and tumble boy who looked at her and saw everything that she was. She didn’t care about his merit scholarships, or that he was far from the same tax bracket as Ariel’s fellow students, and without meaning to fell deeply in love with him.
He was the main one to whom she gave confections, shy and willing, though she kept her feeling about him to herself. Ariel became quite popular in those days by surprise, her high school experience worlds away from middle school, but she never told him how she felt. As is the way of things he started dating someone else and they became a thing, while Ariel kept her emotions in the shadows, her heart breaking when he swept her into a kiss at graduation.
She got a four year degree at a college nearby in business, and then went to culinary school to become better at something that already filled Ariel’s heart with joy. When she came back, proud certificate in hand, her parents bought her a store in celebration for her to work at, and hired a professional pastry chef. She worked under them for a couple of years and now owns her own place - although Ariel has managed to find fulfillment in her professional life, she is still missing something in her personal.
