Performance art

For the performance art assignment, I have decided to show some thing that I am passionate about, cooking. I think when you can create an amazing dish to enjoy and gather people together. Is an amazing art form. I hope all can enjoy food and art as one. Not all performance art needs to be dancing or music there’s multiple different ways you can interpret performance art, and this is mine.

Reading and response #4

The reading From Goldberg Performance Art from Futurism was amazing to hear how Black mountain created a name for themselves that attracted artist writers, play rights and lots of other people !

My favorite line from The Other History of Intercultural Performance was

“The so-called primitive superstition that photographers steal souls had become terrifyingly real.”

This line really spoke volumes especially when talking about how artist deal with their popularity! And how they have to deal with being in the public’s eyes and have to deal with the public’s interest and the misinformation that comes with that

Art project #3 super cuts video/artist statement

The video I chose to make for Supercuts video assignment is dogs being funny, no matter what’s going on these videos always make me laugh.

Although just laughing, does it take Supercuts a video, I think it shows the importance of how dogs are their life to the fullest every day, and I just happen to be there, whereas humans are not living in the moment, recording videos, and taking pictures, and not being present when dogs are always present.

I chose to choose some videos from fail army, YouTube’s page.

Artist statement

I was unable to post this assignment on Tumblr. 

From the moment we are born, up until the moment we die, we are enveloped in threads, and metals. We wear clothing, shoes, and jewelry. What we wear on a daily basis is important. It communicates something about us. It can communicate hobbies or interests. It can indicate personal feelings. Perhaps wearing my favorite outfit means I am in a good mood, or sweats show that I just want to be comfortable that day. As I take these items on and off, am I perhaps removing parts of myself? Am I the same soul clothed as I am naked? This series of ten GIF’s explores getting dressed and undressed. Adding and removing layers of me.

Art Project 2: Gif Series

I indulged myself quite a bit for this series of artworks. I always knew that the best way to capture this set of original characters would be through a media that involved movement. Their moments of tranquility, anxiety, and mystery being captured in small clips feels as if you are looking into these moments yourself. 

The use and difference of some gifs being loops and others not, is intentional. Some moments flee away so fast, while others feel like you are stuck there forever. Whether these moments are good or bad, and how long they last, are not in our control.

“Vanishing and Becoming”

In this article Cubitt talk about is article he talks about light, shadows and the origins of art. The history of a shadow is a Buddhist myth, with origins that contrast with a Pliny tale that talks about in original painting that that not only shows the lover, but the absence that is felt. Cubitt talks about the Buddhist version of projected light and says its “Greek parallel shares a sense that the beginning of art lies and projector light.” in the reading it also talks about how Melanie Klein talks about projecting paranoia onto others, saying, insecurities, help motivate people who are self-assured. But being able to reject into external objects, showed a sign of human development. Cubitt also then establishes the three types of origin one mythical, one archaeological, and one psychological.

“Introduction to Video Art”

In the article Collet says ”video art is distinguished from Cinema, but from very early on, artist started to make film” I’m at the most important aspect was that it was cheap and easy to make. In the article, there are many examples of video art, the first example is Le Voyage Dans la Lune, A Trip to the Moon, by Georges Méliès (1902) a film that shows how cinema was used to create art. another example is hold up 2017 by Beyoncé, and her music video where you can see the real link between art and pop culture. The introduction to video art talks about classic art, and is very informative and ways to distinguish Cinema.

Gif Series

I was inspired by Sampa's "Energy" music video because cinematically its pure art. Given it's women's history month, I thought this was fitting. The symbolism, expression and power in this piece is unlike any other. I really encourage you if you like these to go check out her work. She's from Zambia and the video includes Zambian language- I didn't include that because I wanted to focus on the feminine power shots. I hope this inspires you to remember how much power women have, they're the source of all of us- and anything that as a woman you feel ashamed to experience, claim that shit. It's your power.

You definitely captured of feminine power in every single gif that you created! I love that all, and they really are so intentional in moving when looking at each one. I wonder if the artist could’ve chose multiple powerful women videos, and show that multiple people are showing feminine power? I wonder if that would’ve shown how women use and show their power.

Art project number#2 Gif series

What’s the theme being open, I decided to open up my camera roll for the first time in a while. Although some may say it’s crazy to never look at your photos or videos after you take them. I have learned to live with the chaos and look at them when you need a little bit of cheering up. Making this gifs definitely did such that, as a show what I do for work as a full-time nanny, and what I do in my free time with my dog. I feel like the short gifs definitely open up and show who I am and what I care about, and they are pretty funny too.

Reading and response #2

I found the reading about the gifts really interesting and how such a short little snippet of a video or picture has so much meaning with no sound, and no words. I took a class a semester back where I was able to create my own gifts and it’s definitely an art. As you have to make it, intentional to what you are showing the audience, especially when there’s no text and most gifs. Like in the reading, a brief history of animated GIF, art part one. It goes back and shows how gifts have always been around and how they’ve always made an impact, just like showing the Mario clouds, and how everyone knows what that is.

This is one of my favorite shows, and this is probably one of the funniest scenes.

House this is from Ginny and Georgia, it’s interesting to see that this is all how you feel when trying something new.

I can watch this show for hours, especially in the Disney cinema room .

I just found this hilarious and how this is so out of pocket😂 

I originally chose this because I thought it was gonna say illumination or Universal Studios and the first thing that popped into my head. What is the minions theme song to this.

I just love Disney.

I love watching SpongeBob as a kid and this is exactly what I look like when I was watching it.

I’ve been rooting for this couple since day one 

I can’t wait to visit the new Nintendo world. And try all the good food.

Disappearing Acts

This set of photographic self portraits embodies disappearing to me. I often feel like I disappear on a daily basis. My anxiety often consumes what I consider to be my identity, leaving me a shell of a person. I used photoshop to manipulate these self portraits in an attempt to invoke anxiety. I tried to showcase different emotions such as panic and dissociation. I feel the dark color scheme adds an eerie dimension to the portraits.

Project 1: Disappearing acts

I made this as a reflection of empty space when someone in your life disappears. Their presence, or rather lack of can be felt everywhere in everything you do. I wanted to reflect this feeling by showing myself in places that are empty alone. I post op edited the photos to have a blue and faded coloring to give off a depressed and dissociated feeling.

I love the way you showed where your other person would be, very moving, and very intentional, even down to the crease marks in the seat at the diner. Very thought out and well depicted.

Disappearing: Cilantro, Jalapeño, Tortilla

This collection of pictures represents the way I feel people try to make my culture, language and traditions disappear. I am Latina. I was raised in the southwest speaking Spanish and English. Above are a few food items that although spelled exactly the same in English (because they're Spanish words) are pronounced and sound different in English than in Spanish. I roll my R's, I silence my J's, I use the Y sound for double L's, I use harder sounding T's because this is the way it's pronounced. I am not trying to sound more Latina, as I've heard a more than once, I am Latina. I don't expect people to say it properly, as I do, so I am not going to begin undoing my entire way of speaking to please anyone. That would be absurd.

On the left hand pictures above the background color is vibrant and my skin is darker. I did this for effect to emphasize how much I love my culture and the beautiful colors that come with it. Each food item comes with a second picture where things are a little more drab, I have lighter skin and only the outline of the food to represent the disappearing of this food in the way I know it, talk about it and pronounce it. And to also highlight how I feel people attempt to "Americanize" my very own language and way of speaking.

So, cheers to ALL cultures, languages, traditions and accents!

Although this is very interesting to look at, I would’ve love to see more as I don’t exactly know what direction you’re taking with your art. I love the way you show the differences in your disappearance I just got lost and how they relate.

Disappearing Acts

This piece is a reflection of the inner battle of identity. As a Latina, identity is a difficult conversation. As many Latinos are mixed races or due to colonization of the Native Americans in North and South America. In many Latin cultures and societies, we as a community battle against the erasure of our Native roots and identities, especially in America. Due to the misinformation , in racial stereotypes and social issues surrounding immigration and politics. This piece allows us to openly understand the inner struggles and personification of forced conformity that most Latinos face when it comes to their own identity.

Disappearing Acts

This photo series seeks to embrace the feeling of both physical and theoretical “disappearing”. To achieve this, I cut and colored similar shapes from the images- a few of myself, and a few aspects of the landscape. It felt fitting to align the three images I’m cut from in the center on a diagonal; my intention with this is to create direction and a path for the viewer’s eye to follow.

While I was walking the water’s edge here, I felt so much a part of the ethereal seashore that I forgot I was a person at all; it was a day of utterly blissful nonexistence within a place. I wanted to communicate this feeling of dissociative belonging here, in the context of disappearing.

It’s for this reason that I chose such a light color to fill the cut outs of myself- I intentionally don’t stand out from the scene very much at all, and I’m not what makes this place what it is. In the rest of the images, some rocks are cut out and filled in with a dark color to create contrast with the background. In this, attention is brought to the natural belonging and significance of the towering rocks when they are there, and the equally palpable significance of these features when they are not.

I really aesthetically loved the way your pictures look, I also like the way you added your silhouette in some of those pictures. Was it intentional for you to not stand out of the background?
