Art Project #3: The Supercut Video

Artist Statement:

I wanted to make a video that had some nice clips of when me and my friends play games. It's really meant to be light hearted and something fun for us to watch. It isn't very edited, really all there is are the captions that I used to help emphasize certain parts.

Something that I added for the captions was color coding using what colors we have our names on our discord server. The different colors on the caption add a way to be able to tell who is speaking rather than just what is being said.

I also made sure to chose clips from a couple different games and keeping them all in sequence/grouped up with what game they were go offer a sense of unity.

At the very least, my friends enjoyed the video, and that's what I wanted.

Reading Response #3

Sean Cubitt’s reading starts by going over an old Buddist myth and how it contrasts with Pliny’s tale. The reading continues and talks about how the author likes to start off their lectures in a dark room with nothing but a flashlight to help them tell their story. Connected to how humans used to tell stories through dance, light, and shadow. All of those have one thing in common, and that is projection. Even in more modern times, projection is seen all around. Projection is even in space, since there is a lot of light in space. Then there are also radio transmissions, live broadcasts, and projectors. While projection seems like something so simple, it can be the base of many things, including many different forms of art. At least that is what I got from the reading.

Lea Collet’s reading goes over the start of using video to create art. This was a bit harder of a read. At the beginning she states how in the 1960’s people were able to start carrying cameras and it began to alter videos and art. Presumably because it became more accessible. She even states a bit later on how using cameras for art was more accessible and wasn't as elitist as other forms of art. She talks about the different ways that people use film to convey many different meanings. She also talks about how older films may influence pop culture later down the line, often through the modernization of methods as time passes on.

Looking for Video Art

Finding video art or time-based art was a bit difficult. I'm not the brightest bulb in the box so I am second guessing whether or not short films count as video art, but google says so. So here are some short films that I enjoy and found through a quick search. Fair warning though, the very last one deals with sexual abuse and trauma, so please do not watch it if you think you might react negatively.

Art Project # 2: Gif Series

“Narcissist Theater”

“Narcissist Theater” takes self-shot videos from the last 5 years and highlights a few seconds of each video. Sometimes a video contains more than one GIF-worthy clip. I tried to make them mostly re-usable for a general audience, but the main idea is fun. So feel free to share. If you’re having trouble with that, most devices let you save any GIF as an image/photo that you can upload just like a “still”.

Artist Statement: I wanted to make a series of gifs from a game to tell a story. I though of Mario Kart, Zelda, Pokemon, but I landed on Animal Crossing. It is very open in what you can do, so it made things easier. But playing again reminded me of playing a lot during the lockdown in 2020. While I want able to see my girlfriends during it, I was still able to play animal crossing. It was such a light during such a bad time.

I really like that you chose Animal Crossing for your GIF project. The game holds a special place in my heart since I played ever since the Wild World release. Each GIF is cute, cozy, and contains a lot of personality!!

My theme was to focus on the role animals have. Serotonin boost, enjoying the small moments and appreciating how small gestures can change a persons day.

Art Project #2

“water like our bodies” - a set of 10 gifs on the theme of dance flow as an act of healing.

I chose to utilize an archive of personal footage recorded since 2019 of healing dancefloor experiences. These moments were taken at events ranging from small gatherings with friends to large regional festivals. Regardless of scale - healing and connection can be be found in shared moments of movement; witnessed independently or as one massive being breathing into a wave of bodies flowing to the same rhythm. The synchronicity of our movement is like living water, and it provides just as much sustenance and energy as a wave crashing into itself.

Just as the motion and shape of water cannot be captured within a 2-second frame, the intimacy, community, healing, and connection that comes from dancing is limitless. We only get a glimpse of the larger picture, but even just 2 seconds of watching any body of water is enough to feel nurtured by its ebb and flow.

I adore how much personality and color is in each GIF! The motion, colors, and GIFs are all so pleasing to look at and it feels like I am there. I also enjoy the font you chose for the GIFs, and it creates a sense of unity between them all. Overall, you did a wonderful job!

Mia's Art Project #2: GIF Series

Jack Stauber is a more indie artist who not only does specialize in drawing, his works are notably mixed media, for he also uses claymation, props, LOTS of editing and manipulation of graphics, and creates his own music. This goes exceptionally well with his preference of doing surrealism with some slight humor, though, he also has been known and seen to lean into dark humor and topics as well without going into outright gore. I specifically chose to focus on his Adult Swim mini film called “OPAL”, for it not only shows how he uses mixed media and his own music to draw you in, but, it also showcases how he wants to delve deeper into darker, more depressing topics. For the film, you watch a young girl named “Claire” as she goes through a house and has terrifying encounters with the residents in it, all of whom are trying to get her for doing “something” wrong. In my GIFS, I did my best to select the moments that helped convey this story, such as showing the beginning, Claire’s initial distress, and the house that she eventually ends up inside. After that, I showed each person she encountered, such as the blind old man, the narcissistic mirror man, and the alcoholic woman, and with them, a GIF that shows a bit of their songs. Finally, to end it off, I decided to go with one of the last few shots of Claire as she cowers from these people, showing her vulnerability as a child. I highly encourage that you go to watch the actual mini film itself, for it shows you the exact reason why it is called “OPAL”, and why these people are targeting a child.

I really liked the film that you chose to make GIFs of! The animation style is unique and stands out, and you did a good job on choosing key moments that convey the story. You certainly did well enough for me to feel a bit anxious, given the film was originally a horror one with a dark story.

Art Project #2: GIF Series

This whimsical GIF series seeks to stretch a smile across the face of every viewer. It’s a story of sorts- the marvelous adventure of a little blue girl and her yellow blob friend as they traverse both real and imagined scenes. In addition to the delight of watching these cartoon characters, this series brings in waves of psychedelic colors and lights to entrance the viewer and create the illusion of a mystical new world.

As you allow these short snippets to play, my hope as an artist is for the vibrant colors and silly imagery to evoke a lighthearted playfulness and spark the imagination of all who watch. It’s a sweet thing to hold on to the gift of childlike play, especially as adults who often find themselves in much less joyful realities than we did when we were young. I welcome you to shed the stiff skin of adulthood and venture into the magic of creativity and vibrant life!

I absolutely love the colors in these GIFs! They feel so dreamy, cozy, and nostalgic! You really were able to evoke the feelings of playfulness and imagination like you had hoped to! These are also very nice to look at and i enjoy watching them all.

Art Project 2: The Loop

My favorite Gifs are often ones that are nostalgic, sparking memories from when I was a kid, bringing to the surface simple moments of joy.

In this series, I Illustrated and manipulated cartoon popsicles you would get from an ice cream truck. I remember the gumball eyes were never in the right spot, and often the colors would bleed together, never truly looking like the image that was advertised on the side of the truck and I really wanted to capture this.

I never made my own Gif before with my drawings, so this was really fun to play with and a little challenging to get just right, but I'm happy with how they turned out.

I really like these!! They truly elicit a feeling of nostalgia! I like how each character is one from many of our childhoods. Your artistic skills are amazing as well. The way each popsicle melts and flows down consistently is amazing, and the shading on the bubblegum eyes Bubbles has is so good, I nearly mistook it as real gum balls!

Art Project #2: Gif Series

Using the power of the humor in gifs, I tried to find the humor in everyday frustrations. Without fail I am faced with something that frustrates me everyday. Wether it’s stubbing my toe or taking a fall, I can’t seem to get away from it. I found that anything put in gif form can be funny. It’s easy to let the little things throughout the day add up to a major frustration that just steals the day from you. Looking at it from a different perspective, you might find that what you were mad at about was really just silly. I hope that people are able to relate to these gifs and have a good laugh! (Shoutout to little sister)

I really like this series of GIFs for a number of reasons. The visual look of the GIFs (which probably came from being a web ready GIF. If not, then I really like the choice of the filter), and each GIF has its own personality and humor. They are very enjoyable to watch, which is very important to a GIF!

Art Project #2 Gif Series: No Rhyme or Reason

There is no rhyme or reason to this rhythm and repetition. Organized chaos reigns in this space. Creativity comes and she goes, and the only thing left for me to do is just do. I am a tidy artist. I clean up when I am done. I go through my studio and sort through the piles of beads, paints, wire, tools, findings, broken bits, and baubles. Purging to be free of the notion that this is just a hobby, a craft, a diversion.

Technology alludes me and it’s never been my friend. But here I am in 2023 using all the buzz words. Social media, gifs, reels, digital photography. These are all part of my studio practices. My present-day rhyme, reason, rhythm and repetition. My new groove as a working artist.

I am a huge fan of jewelry and yours are beautiful! The use of GIFs helps show more of the personality and intricate beauty that every piece has. I can't help but to keep looking at the GIFs to better observe the jewelry.

Gif Series

I was inspired by Sampa's "Energy" music video because cinematically its pure art. Given it's women's history month, I thought this was fitting. The symbolism, expression and power in this piece is unlike any other. I really encourage you if you like these to go check out her work. She's from Zambia and the video includes Zambian language- I didn't include that because I wanted to focus on the feminine power shots. I hope this inspires you to remember how much power women have, they're the source of all of us- and anything that as a woman you feel ashamed to experience, claim that shit. It's your power.

I love how you chose a music video from Sampa! I have never listened to her music, but your GIFs give a nice glimpses into the vibes of her music video. The cinematography of the music really is pure art like you say, and I feel like you did a good job capturing some of the best clips! It's all so beautiful, and I can't help but want to watch the music video for myself.

Art project number#2 Gif series

What’s the theme being open, I decided to open up my camera roll for the first time in a while. Although some may say it’s crazy to never look at your photos or videos after you take them. I have learned to live with the chaos and look at them when you need a little bit of cheering up. Making this gifs definitely did such that, as a show what I do for work as a full-time nanny, and what I do in my free time with my dog. I feel like the short gifs definitely open up and show who I am and what I care about, and they are pretty funny too.

I love how despite every GIF coming from a different source material and them having varying themes, you were able to find a clip in each that related to another! Each GIF is short and sweet, and captures the essence of the scene very well! I quite enjoy this!

Art Project 2: Gif Series

I indulged myself quite a bit for this series of artworks. I always knew that the best way to capture this set of original characters would be through a media that involved movement. Their moments of tranquility, anxiety, and mystery being captured in small clips feels as if you are looking into these moments yourself.

The use and difference of some gifs being loops and others not, is intentional. Some moments flee away so fast, while others feel like you are stuck there forever. Whether these moments are good or bad, and how long they last, are not in our control.
