The Unique Painting Style of Tzu-chi Yeh

After living in New York for nineteen years, he returned to settle in Hualien in 2006. Works have been participated in varies solo and group exhibitions at home and abroad, including the 1980 Asian Youth Art Exhibition held in Hong Kong, the Taipei American Cultural Center and the Westbeth Gallery in NY in 1987 and 1989 respectively. He was invited by the NY Choice Art Gallery to attend the joint exhibition named “The Day of Death” in 1989 and 1990. His recent solo exhibitions include the 2004 “Monologue – the Near and Far Away from Home” Eslite Gallery; 2007 “Through the Landscape of the Mind” Eslite Gallery; 2009 “Landscape Taiwan” Eslite Gallery. Yeh’s still life subjects from the “Soliloquy” series to the “Landscape Taiwan” series are the records of his inner feelings, realistic with symbolic metaphors, paintings are filled with personal touch, strong and unique in style. His work is very highly prized at auctions.

Sand Tufas

You could be forgiven for thinking that the otherworldly rock formations in these pictures come from another planet, or from a sci-fi movie perhaps. But they’re actually called sand tufas and they come from right here on earth.

A tufa is a peculiar form of calcium carbonate, and they’re created when calcium-bearing freshwater springs well up through alkaline lake water (which is rich in carbonates). The carbonate and calcium combine and, over centuries, these elements form unusual spires, towering columns, and strange cauliflower-shaped mounds which can reach heights of up to nine metres (30ft). Tufas can only form underwater, and they’re only exposed when lakes are drained or dry out over many years. John Salminen born 1945, is an American watercolor painter who is well known for his realistic urban landscapes. Salmien earned his Bachelor’s Degree and Master’s Degree from the University of Minnesota. He teaches workshops, makes presentations and participates in painting events around the world.

John has won more than 230 major awards in national and international exhibitions, including the American Watercolor Society Gold Medal twice, the National Watercolor Society Silver Star First Place Award twice, the Transparent Watercolor Society of America Skyledge First Place Award three times and the Allied Artist Silver and Gold Medals of Honor. He is represented by the Stremmel Gallery in Reno, Nevada.
