hi! I'm a rly big fan of your coloring work on snotgirl. I was kind of wondering about the process... I'm super interested in working in comics and learning to be a colorist. I'd love to be able to learn from your process as it is so inspiring to me. what is it like to get the drawings, how do you take them to their colored form? what tools do you use? any tips? what is the communication like between you and the writers? <3
Oh, thank you…!! :’) The process for coloring Snotgirl is like this: the inks are flatted to save time - these are just random colors for me to fillbucket later > Leslie sends me written notes with some reference pictures to give me an idea of her vision for a scene, or lighting cues, what colors the outfits might be, or whatever > I color in Photoshop > Leslie and I trade notes and revisions for a while, usually 2-3 rounds, until she’s happy with the finished pages.
As for how I actually color the pages I think is not that interesting, LOL. I decide on a palette, sometimes i’ll use a reference photo, and then do color holds, shading, highlights, and smaller details in steps.
As far as tips… I really like using limited color palettes, if you just pick 2-3 colors you think look nice together it’s hard to mess up LOL
