Friends Are Never for Occasions.

Friends are never for occasions. They are forever. The utilitarian idea of friendship, as mutual help, mutual first aid, exchange of favors, deposit of trust, society of confidences, is disgusting. Friendship is pure pleasure. It cannot be contaminated with favors and help, read debts. You ask, you give, you receive, you forget, and you don't talk about it anymore. The decline of friendship between us is due to the exploitation to which it has been subjected. It has become a kind of Freemasonry, a center of connections, words, complicity, and nepotism. That is why friendships are made and broken as if they were political or commercial ties. If someone “fails” or “does not reciprocate,” if they do not fulfill their contractual obligations, they are immediately condemned as a “bad” friend and summarily ostracized. It's all madness. Only this misery forces us to state the obvious: friends are people we like and spend time with from time to time. We may not even get along very well with them. Or like them more than they like us. It doesn't matter. Friendship is a selfish pleasure, or inevitable, the path of a heart in free fall. Friends have to be useless. That is, they are enough just by existing and, wonderfully, remain in our souls just for who and how they are. The why, where, and when don't matter. Friendship has no starting point, no path, no goal. It is impossible to remember how we became friends with someone or to think about the future we will have. The glory of friendship is that it only exists in the present. That is why it lasts forever; because it contains no expectations, plans, anxieties.
