ramble about squirrelflight’s hope
Truthfully, I think that Bramblestar’s still struggling with the idea of being like Firestar. I believe the problem is not the actual relationship but one between finding common ground and seeing each other as equals. I think that they’ve always had trouble seeing eye to eye and one of the reasons behind this is their individual roles.
Bramblestar may I remind you is the son of Tigerstar. He had an entire arc were he had to prove himself to not only his fellow clanmates but to his leader/mentor that he was a good guy.
Now compare that to Squirrelflight, the daughter of Bramblestar’s mentor. While I could easily go on about how they were Romeo and Juliet, that is not the case. If anything, they are complete polar opposites of each other.
Over the course of the books, it is shown how they often argue with each other. So why is it now that people are concerned for their relationship? Simple really
Squirrelflight is now the deputy of Thunderclan and mate to Bramblestar. She reasons with logic of finding alternative solutions. Similar to her father, she tries to propose peaceful solutions to problems. While that is good and all, there is still one thing she desperately desires, the feeling of truly being a mother. At first this may confuse some people, seem extremely out of character but here are some points I want to cover
1) When she adopted the three as her own, she was extremely unprepared to become a mother. She never expected to have kits, nevertheless ones that were her sister. Most of the time the series constantly pointed out that she never spent time in the Nursery with them.
Along with that she also had to carry that huge secret of who the kits actual parents were in order to protect them and her sister. The iconic fire scene is enough to show how much of an impact that had on her.
2) When she gave birth to Sparkkit and Alderkit, yet again she had no time to spend in the Nursery. As the deputy, she rarely interacted with her kits. She was desperately trying to balance the role as a deputy and mother but failed yet again.
For Bramblestar it is the exact same position. And while as deputy he found time to spend with his kits, as leader he failed to form a strong bond with them. He tried to form a connection with his kits, the ones that truly were of his kin, but struggled so much. I think Bramblestar still struggles with the whole fiasco of the three’s true origin. Because of that he indirectly distanced himself from them.
This is were it all starts going down. Squirrelflight wants to have kits because she wants to experience the true joys of being a mother now that the Clans are in a state of peace.
Bramblestar is extremely focused on living up to his Clan exceptions of him as a leader, that fear of being like his father and that feeling of “betrayal” from his mate still haunting him.
The final straw was none other than what they are to each other. Its clear that they respect each other to an extent, but to what? Teamwork is valuable in this relationship, and the fact that they are Leader and Deputy is what drives them apart.
Of course Squirrelflight is trying to find alternative solutions to problems so everyone is happy
Of course Bramblestar is embarrassed at not only his deputy but also his mate disagreeing with him
Though because of their clashing intentions, Bramblestar comes off as a jerk and Squirrelflight seems to be pressuring him into having kits

Makes me so hyped and scared to find out what happens next
