Hey everyone! It’s been a while since I last posted! Trying to keep on top of the animation project and my health kinda got this blog left by the wayside, but now I’m back to update you all on everything that’s happened and the process as a whole~ This blog will pretty much be queue-run for the most part while I’m catching up on things, but hopefully there’ll be some interesting things to come.

FREE ART PROGRAMS

So recently I came across a fellow artist who was struggling to find a free art program, and considering dropping the large amount of money for a Photoshop license. I know not everyone can afford such an expensive program, so I’ve compiled a list of programs with no cost to download and use.

Keep in mind all computers are different, so not all will work for everyone. Also, I’ve only ever used Windows, so for the most part, I’m not sure if everything will work for Mac. if in doubt check the website linked.

This is an adorable and touching animation, which follows a young girl as she discovers the world around her and imagines what it must look like. It was made by three students from Taiwan: Ya-Ting Yu, Ya-Hsuan Yeh, and Ling Chung. (The team have their own website here just for this animation)

It’s quite long compared to what I have to do this year, but it’s definitely something I would look at for reference to art styles, especially if I go with the ‘little witch’ idea~

This video switches from a final coloured animation to some kind of line test at various points, which gives an interesting insight into the animation process, but I love the story and the plot twist more than anything

Out of all the videos I’ve collected, I find this video particularly interesting. There’s no speech in the film at all, and it doesn’t seem to follow the conventional rules of a story. Watching this video a dozen times over, we’re no closer to knowing who the characters actually are, what this room is, how does the switch work, what kind of magic is involved, and so on.

Yet in such a short time, with no context or speech, it’s still hilarious to me. The sound effects and the character expressions are all that’s needed to draw a person in and let them follow what’s going on. It’s quite cleverly made and I just love this animation.

There are so many of these movies now, and this first one was made around 8 years ago, so I’m sure most people with internet access have probably seen it at some point or another. The simplistic black line-art on a white background doesn’t seem to damage the animations in any real way, but would probably make production of the videos a lot faster.

The videos are also compilations of short skits, usually around ten seconds or less, and as I might be including this kind of choppy style in either of my own animation ideas, it seems like something I could learn from in terms of content.

An Undertale-based animation by YouTube user GaelRice.

I love this animation, and the effect of having the black&white section in the middle. GaelRice has also managed to show expression and speech with Skeletal characters, which one of my animation ideas includes, so this video could be extra helpful to me if I go with that idea.

For some reason this animation plays twice, back-to-back, but just one play of the actual animation IS 1:49. Anyway, I’ve been a fan of Nathan Sharp for a while as well as the show Steven Universe, so I already knew this video existed when I started looking for research.

It’s such inspirational music and a quality animation, including lip-synching, and I would highly recommend watching this video to anyone even remotely interested.

This is another animation from Gobelins, and it’s very high-quality work. I loved the colours in this but.. I don’t really ‘get’ the concepts or any meaning behind it. Still, the animation alone is enough to inspire me somewhat, so it’s on here with the rest of my research.

quick question: when you mention balloon effect and ladder effect with regards to designs, i'm unsure what those are and i can't find stuff on google. do you have any examples?

I’m so glad you asked (I was waiting for someone to ask me about these techniques!). I actually learned these from a friend of mine and I find it super helpful!

As a disclaimer, I’m not some sort of expert on this so take it with a grain of salt. I would also like to say these techniques are not set rules to character design. They’re just techniques that could help you improve your character designs. If you don’t think they’re useful, then you don’t have to use it!

I guess you can’t find anything on it because it’s a technique not a lot of people know about? The no ladder effect, at it’s core, is to help designers vary the proportions of a character (while still being anatomically correct). When you map out the character with lines and find that the spaces in between them are the same, that’s the ladder effect. It’s all about exaggeration with varying the proportions of the character (and still have it work anatomically).

This is a (not so great) example on a character that suffers from ladder effect. Notice how a lot of the proportions are even? You can see a lot of the steps of the ladder are equal to each other. Even with cloths or hair styles, it probably wouldn’t make for an interesting design. Now let’s take a character from Steven Universe:

See how Pearl’s proportions are all varied? This is a good example of a character design with no ladder effect. You may have some places that may look slightly similar, but the point is to vary up the character’s proportions. A show like Steven Universe is a good example of this because of how varied the designs are. I would recommend going over other character designs from the show to give you a better idea on how the technique works.

As for the bowling ball technique, it’s a lot more simple and works along with the no ladder effect. It’s basically keeping the eyes and mouth varied and not exactly the same size (hence looking like a bowling ball).

This technique can be applied to noses as well. For example, you can have the eyes and mouth the same, but the nose can be huge or small depending on the face. Just remember: the main point of both techniques is to vary the shapes of your design!

Initial Animation Ideas

To start off with, every person had to aim to come up with three ideas for an original one-minute animation. I actually came up with four in the end. Here they are: Idea 1- ‘Little Witch’ A stop-frame animation of a young witch trying to create a love potion. The film would cover a few attempts which fail in amusing ways- from bringing life to one of the ingredients to turning the whole room pink.

Idea 2- Beauty And The Beast I had an idea for a Beauty And The Beast reboot, in a modern(ish) setting and with a modified plotline. However, I imagined this more as a live-action trailer than a one-minute animation, and couldn’t think of an effective way to alter the media. So I scrapped this idea fairly quickly.

Idea 3- Head Gremlins Almost a little similar to the conscious emotions of Disney’s ‘Inside Out’, I came up with the idea of ‘gremins’ in a person’s mind, each responsible for seperate tasks or traits. The focus would have been specifically on two gremlins- one to represent the conscious reasoning of a human, and Panic, this human’s fear and anxieties. The scenarios would probably have had to be based on my own experiences with anxiety, just to make the process quicker and easier, but I found it difficult to string these into a one-minute story, so eventually, this idea was scrapped. (I am tempted to try creating a comic version of these scenes, separately to the course, but, priorities~)

Idea 4- ‘50 Things To Do With Your Skeleton Friend’ A human girl and her skeleton friend list various ideas, such as playing the xylophone on the skeleton’s ribs, storing things in their skull, etc. Before the end of the 50 things, however, the skeleton would get fed up with being used and storm off of the set, ending the video before the 1-minute mark.

With two ideas scrapped, only ideas 1 and 4 were developed any further. I’ll put these developments on two separate posts for you later~

My first task for this animation course is to come up with an idea for a one-minute animation. So I started brainstorming some rough ideas and also took a look at some short animations through Youtube, just get a sense of the content that can be created in a short timeframe.

I’m At University!!

So last month I started the first year of a university animation course. And guess what? I need to have a blog for it! So, you guys can look forward to seeing an active blog again with all new kinds of work. I’ve changed about the pages on my blog a little bit, so the work from last year will be separated and also to organise my current stuff better.

I’m going to spend the next few days here just kind of stockpiling- putting up all the work and research I’ve done so far for this course. (I might put some of it into a queue to avoid flooding anyone’s dash with stuff) Hopefully it’s semi-interesting though! I’ll also do my best to answer any questions so feel free to drop into my inbox if something does catch your interest~
